Chapter 11 #4
The prisoner shook his head in disbelief. “This is way worse than I ever thought. She was already here this morning. She usually comes to see me on Saturdays too, and I’ll try to talk to her, but otherwise, I don’t know what I can possibly do.”
“If she says something that could help us in any way, could you—”
“I told Gina if I find out anything when Mama visits, I’ll let her know.
If I don’t have any phone time left, I’ll ask to speak to the warden and tell him what’s going on, or I’ll see if I can pay another inmate to use his call time to call her.
Mama needs to be stopped before she really hurts somebody. ”
Kyle nodded. “I agree. We’ve got to stop her somehow.”
Nate leaned in again and clasped his hands together on the countertop.
“I just want you to know … It seems weird talking to you like this about my wife—ex-wife—but I do want her to have a good life. I know I was a bastard. I treated her and the kids so bad. I don’t deserve a family or people to love me, but I want them to have that. If she’s happy with you, I’m happy.”
“We’re happy together. I haven’t been this happy in a long, long time, and I don’t want Margie messing it up for us.”
“Me neither. I’ll do what I can.” A guard stepped up behind Nate. “Time for me to go. It was good to meet you, Kyle. I feel better knowing they’ve got you looking out for them.”
“I’d die for them. Wouldn’t hesitate.”
Nate stood and let the guard hook his chains.
“I wouldn’t say that too loud. With my mama, it could come to that.
Take care.” He watched as they led Nate away and when the orange jumpsuit was out of sight, Kyle rose and made his way to the door.
A guard escorted him back to the desk, he picked up his things, and in a few minutes, he was on his way back home.
He’d had a good conversation with Nate. So why did he feel like the earth was about to open up and swallow them all?
It was almost dark, and Kyle had gathered everything he needed. “What are you up to now?” Gina asked as she looked at the array of things he’d set out in the garage.
“Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.”
“Who says I don’t want the answers?”
“Okay, let me put it this way. If you don’t know, then when somebody asks, you can honestly say you don’t know.”
“I don’t want you getting hurt.”
“I’m not gonna get hurt, babe. I promise.
But she’s supposed to go see Nate in the morning, and this will slow her down.
She’s going to learn to not fuck with me one way or another.
She could do it the easy way, but she’s chosen the hard way.
And until the sheriff’s department gets enough evidence and arrests her, I’m going to do what I can. ”
“Kyle, please …”
“It’s okay. I swear to you. She may have to do a little painting, but that’ll be it.”
“You’re going to graffiti her house?”
Kyle laughed loudly. “Hell no! I’m classier than that, girl! Now, I’ve gotta get going. Wish me luck.”
“I’ll wish you bail money.”
“That’ll work too. A few hours and it’ll be done.” Oh, the plans he had … She was going to be furious in the morning. And, boy, he wished he could be there to see that!
It was one thirty in the morning when Kyle pulled in behind an abandoned convenience store three doors down from Margie’s house, and every house in the neighborhood was dark.
With the big bucket on the ground, he poured the two large jugs of chemicals into it, then took a three-foot length of two by two lumber and stirred, watching the second hand on his watch.
It needed to be stirred for three minutes to activate and mix it.
When it was done, he grabbed the turkey baster he’d nicked from Gina’s kitchen—he’d buy her a new one—and made his way through the shadows to Margie’s house.
His black hoodie, black cap, black jeans, and latex gloves covered everything except his face, and it was hidden inside the hood.
Starting at the back door, he loaded the turkey baster and squirted the mixture into the door frame just above the locks.
When he was finished with that, he gently closed the storm door and did the same to it.
He went to each window and squirted the mixture into the crevice between the bottom of the window sash and the sill, and repeated what he’d done at the back door on the front one, both entry and storm doors.
There was a good bit of the chemical mixture left and he thought about using it on the mailbox, but that was federal property, and he wasn’t planning to go to a federal prison just to teach Margie Ivitts a lesson.
But he did use some on her garbage container before he headed back. That would be funny.
When it was all done, he made his way back to his truck, dumped the jugs, stirring stick, and bucket into the abandoned dumpster behind the building, then took off his gloves and stuffed them in his pocket.
In all, it had taken him less than an hour to do what he’d done, but it would take her hours to undo it.
He had a feeling emergency services would be called, but he also was pretty sure no one would be angry.
They’d probably stand on the lawn and laugh.
He wished he could be there for that!
