Chapter 15
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
This time, Bowman called my parents. Lake tried to take the blame, but since he doesn’t have anyone to answer to at home, Bowman wasn’t willing to let it slide.
“I’ll wait for you outside,” Lake promised me before he left the office.
Forty-five minutes later, the door opens, and Mom and Dad walk in.
Well, Mom does. Dad is giving me a steely stare, “What did you do?”
“I took a hall pass and left the room,” I explain with a shrug.
“Mr. and Mrs. Driscoll, Genesis took the hall pass from a student that needed to use the lavatory and walked out of class without permission to do so.”
He makes it sound like I committed an act of terrorism when it was merely an act of war.
“Why did you do that, honey?” Mom asks.
“Because she kept interrupting my presentation. Me and Lake worked really hard on it.”
Mom shoots a nervous glance in Dad’s direction as he tries to place the name. And when he does, it becomes plain as day on his face.
“Is that who was in the hallway?” he barks at me.
“Warner, not now,” Mom tells him.
“A few weeks ago, she hit another student in the face resulting in a broken nose,” Bowman continues.
“Are you going to punish my daughter?” Dad asks gruffly.
“I’d like to think that maybe if I leave this in your hands, it’ll be taken care of,” Bowman replies.
“Get up,” Dad barks at me. “We’ve got a lot to talk about it seems.”
I roll my eyes as I get to my feet. I reach into my pocket and toss the hall pass on the principal’s desk on the way out.
As soon as we get into the hallway, Lake looks at me nervously.
When he turns his eyes toward my father, his expression hardens. They never got along because Dad assumed he was as “perverse” as the rest of his family.
“Stay away from my daughter,” Dad snarls at him.
“Warner,” Mom hisses.
“You go near her again and we’re going to have a problem,” Dad assures him in an even tone as he grips me by the elbow and begins to drag me down the hallway.
I glance at Lake over my shoulder and feel so fucking heartbroken when I see how sad he looks again.
I won’t abandon him again.
Not now.
Not ever.
