Chapter Nineteen
‘I don’t mind walking you know,’ I tell Adam.
‘Don’t worry, we’re nearly there. Are you worried I’m going to drop you?’ he asks with a chuckle. ‘You just saved the festival – I can’t expect you to walk barefoot after that.’
As we were leaving the beach I was excitedly telling Adam all of my ideas to source local musical talent when I stepped in the biggest pile of dog crap. With both feet. Because of course I did. I am incapable of being cool. Needless to say, the pumps I was wearing were absolutely ruined (thankfully they were only cheap ones) so Adam insisted he would piggyback me back to the house.
‘Don’t worry, I can walk up the drive,’ I say as we reach Adam and Si’s house, but Adam only sees this as a challenge and he charges up the driveway with me on his back. I can’t help but scream like I’m on a rollercoaster. A really strong, sexy rollercoaster.
Once we’re inside, Adam lowers me onto the sofa.
‘We should celebrate,’ he says, grabbing a bottle of champagne from the drinks cabinet.
‘Ice cream for breakfast, champagne for lunch – I could get used to this,’ I joke.
As Adam pops the cork I scream like a girl. The champagne rushes out of the bottle, like it does on an F1 winners’ podium, and it sprays everywhere.
‘Wait, I’ve got this,’ I tell him, quickly grabbing the bottle, wrapping my lips around it to try and at least drink some of it. I mean, I love champagne, but it doesn’t go how I think it will, as it all spills down my front.
Adam grabs the bottle from me and tries to do the same. As he does he slips on the wet hardwood floor and as I try to help him I fall down too.
‘What on earth is going on here?’ Si asks. I didn’t hear him come in, let alone notice him standing over us.
‘Hey bro, sorry,’ Adam says, quickly jumping to his feet. ‘I didn’t realise you were working from home today. We were just, er, celebrating.’
‘Celebrating what?’ Si asks, semi-suspiciously.
‘Adam has sorted me a job,’ I tell him. ‘Working on the festival, sourcing some last-minute bands.’
‘I see,’ Si says. ‘So, that explains the day drinking.’
‘You know me,’ Adam says with a laugh. ‘Never one to turn down a spot of day drinking.’
‘And mess-making,’ Si points out. ‘Clean this up, yeah? You know the floor wasn’t cheap.’
Si skulks off moodily.
‘Big brothers,’ Adam says simply.
‘Yep, I know them well,’ I reply. ‘I’ll grab the kitchen roll.’
‘I can clean up, don’t worry,’ Adam insists. ‘We’re working together now.’
He winks and me and flashes me a cheeky smile which, if I’m being honest, drives me slightly crazy.
I’m over the moon, at the thought of spending more time with Adam.
I just hope it isn’t a problem for Si, because he was definitely giving off a vibe just then.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
