Chapter 20
CHAPTER 20
H annah
Lucy and I sat on the blanket by the shoreline and ate pizza.
“Did the Motrin help your cramps?” I asked.
“Yeah. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Oh, by the way, I don’t have school tomorrow.”
“What? Why?”
“Something about teacher’s records day. I forgot to tell Mara the other day.”
“Okay. I have some things to do, so you’ll have to come with me.”
We picked up the blanket and the pizza box and went inside the house. There was no way I could sleep in the guesthouse and leave her in the main house by herself.
“I suppose you’ll be sleeping in here,” she said.
“Yeah. I can’t leave you alone all night. I’ll sleep on the couch.”
“Why? Just take one of the guestrooms.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. I don’t think my dad would mind if you slept in his bed. It won’t be his much longer once the primary room is redone.”
“I think I’ll stay in one of the other rooms.”
“Suit yourself. I’m going to take a shower. Maybe we can watch a movie when I’m done.”
“Is there popcorn?” I smiled.
“Yeah. A whole box in the pantry.”
While Lucy was in the shower, Adalyn Facetimed me.
“Hey, you.” I smiled.
“I told Colin about the baby!”
“And?”
“He’s so excited, he can barely stand it. Oh my God, sis. I can’t believe I’m pregnant. Don’t tell anyone. We’re announcing it at the engagement party. I was able to secure a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.”
“You know I won’t say a word. Did you tell Luis?”
“Yeah. We just did. He is so excited. How are things over in tween land?”
“She started her period today for the first time.”
“Oh shit. Really?”
“Yeah. We talked a bit, and as soon as she gets out of the shower, we’re going to watch a movie.”
“Good. See, I told you she doesn’t hate you. It’s all hormones.”
“Maybe.” I smiled.
“I have to go. Colin and I are celebrating. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Okay. Congrats, sis. I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
I threw the bag of popcorn in the microwave, and Lucy walked into the kitchen in her pajamas.
“What movie do you want to watch?” I asked.
“Abigail.”
“Isn’t that a horror movie?”
“Yeah. I watch scary movies all the time.”
“You do?” I narrowed my eyes.
“Yeah. My dad doesn’t care. I know it’s not real.”
When the popcorn had finished popping, I removed the bag from the microwave and shook it into a large bowl.
“Abigail it is.” I smiled.
During the movie, Lucy was texting someone.
“Are you watching this?” I asked.
“Yeah. It’s my dad. He wants to know how I’m doing.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t tell him that we’re watching this.”
“Too late.”
Suddenly, my phone pinged with a text from Alex.
“She’s not allowed to watch horror films.”
“Sorry. She told me you let her all the time.”
“She lied to you. Turn it off, or she’ll have nightmares.”
“Will do.”
“Dad says we have to turn this off.” I picked up the remote.
“NO! I’m watching it!”
“Then I guess you shouldn’t have told him. You lied to me.”
She shrugged.
“Why did you lie?” I asked.
“Just leave me alone!” She got up from the couch and stormed up the stairs.
I was tired and didn’t have the energy to deal with an eleven-year-old hormonal child, so I went upstairs and climbed into bed. The one thing that pissed me off was how Alex couldn’t be bothered to ask how I was doing. I totally understood that he would text his daughter, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought maybe he thought about me. Perhaps a few text exchanges before he went to sleep. I guess I was wrong.
As I drifted off to sleep, I heard the door creak open.
“Hannah, can I sleep in your bed?”
“Yes, of course.” I moved over, and she climbed in.
“We probably shouldn’t have watched that movie,” she softly spoke.
“Probably not. Try to get some sleep and remember it’s all make-believe.”
“I’m trying, but it’s hard.”
“ C an you believe our little Addy is finally going to be a mother?” Luis whispered in my ear.
“I can’t, and I’m so happy for her and Colin.”
“So, how are things going with Miss Lucy?” He glanced over at her across the room.
“It’s okay, I guess. She ran errands with me yesterday, and then we went swimming. When I think she’s coming around, she does or says something to make me think otherwise.”
“Well, her daddy will be home tomorrow, and you won’t have to play Mommy Dearest anymore. You didn’t get out the wire hanger, did you?”
“Stop that.” I playfully smacked his chest.
Colin and Adalyn thanked everyone for coming to their engagement party and then dropped the bomb about the baby. Watching the excitement on her face was so satisfying.
“Come on, Lucy. We better get home. It’s late.”
“Okay.”
She hugged everyone goodbye, and we climbed into my car.
“Did your dad say what time he’ll be home tomorrow?”
“He said around two o’clock. Isabelle’s step-mom and dad are taking her to this waterpark tomorrow and invited me. I already asked my dad, and he said I could go. They’re picking me up at noon.”
“Are you sure you asked him?”
“Yeah. Of course, I did.”
“Okay.”
The following day, Isabelle’s dad picked up Lucy.
“Have fun. I’ll see you later.”
“Bye.” She waved, walking out the door.
I grabbed some of the things I’d brought over and returned to the guesthouse. As I was on the couch with my laptop, finalizing orders for the shop, there was a knock at the door. Getting up, I opened it and saw Alex standing there.
“Hi.” A beautiful smile graced his face.
“Hi. Welcome back.”
He cupped my face in his hands and smashed his mouth against mine, pushing me back until he was inside and kicking the door shut. Our kiss was passionate and something I missed while he was gone. His clean and masculine scent surrounded me, turning me on even more than I already was.
I quickly pulled my tank top over my head as he unbuttoned his shirt and threw it to the ground. After taking down my shorts, he picked me up and set me on the island. The cold of the granite pierced through me, but my body heated up quickly as his mouth explored me. Alex took down his pants, gripped my hips, and pulled me forward, thrusting inside. My legs wrapped tightly around his waist as our lips tangled and soft moans erupted. I missed him. I missed this. And I was happy he was home. He moved in and out of me quickly, causing a pleasurable orgasm to tear through me. His movements slowed as he pushed deep inside, halted, and exploded while satisfying moans escaped his lips.
“God, I needed that.” His breath was bated.
Pulling out of me, he pulled up his pants, reached down, and picked up my shorts, handing them to me and lifting me off the island.
“Lucy texted me when I landed and said you told her she could spend the day with Isabelle and her family.”
“What do you mean?” I slipped on my shirt. “She told me last night she asked you if she could go with them, and you said yes.”
“I first heard of it earlier today. I really wanted my daughter home when I returned. I haven’t seen her in almost a week. You probably should have texted me yourself last night and asked.”
“So, it’s my fault?” I narrowed my eyes.
“I’m not saying it’s your fault, Hannah. But you knew I hadn’t seen her all week. You could have told her no.”
“She told me she texted you, and you said it was okay.”
“Do you believe everything an eleven-year-old tells you?” His brow arched. “She’s going to say anything to get her way. I have to go.” He kissed my forehead and walked out the door.
I stared at the door and wondered what the hell just happened. Was he seriously blaming me? I grabbed my purse, climbed into my car, and drove to my sister’s house.
