VALENTINE’S DAY
T he gymnasium at the Mistletoe Hollow Community Center was a vision of Valentine’s Day magic. Twinkling fairy lights crisscrossed the ceiling, heart-shaped balloons bobbed gently in the air, and tables covered in crisp white linens were adorned with pink and red rose petals. The soft hum of conversation and the gentle strumming of a live band filled the space with warmth and energy.
Emily paused by the refreshment table, straightening a tray of Mrs. Hart’s famous heart-shaped sugar cookies. Her crimson dress, simple yet elegant, skimmed her figure as she moved, and her carefully curled hair framed her face. She glanced around the room, taking in the smiling faces of the townsfolk she’d come to think of as family. The decorations, the laughter, the sense of community—it was everything she loved about Mistletoe Hollow.
Lila approached, her soft pink dress accentuating the slight curve of her stomach. She glowed, her excitement for the evening evident. “We pulled it off,” she said, gesturing toward the room. “Looks amazing, doesn’t it?”
Emily smiled. “It really does. Everyone’s having a great time.”
Jack appeared behind Lila, handing her a sparkling water. “Your dad’s about to get up to something,” he said with a smirk. “Pretty sure I heard him rehearsing lines in the car.”
Lila rolled her eyes, though her smile softened. “He’s been acting suspicious all week. I have a feeling tonight’s going to be memorable.”
Emily laughed, her gaze drifting toward the stage where Doug stood chatting with Nurse Nancy. The sight made her heart swell. Doug had become such a steady presence in her life, and seeing him happy brought her a deep sense of joy.
The band played on, couples took to the dance floor, and the evening unfolded in a blur of music and laughter. Emily found herself swept up in conversations, dancing with Jack, and catching up with Penelope, who was eagerly awaiting news about her interview with Dr. Sanchez.
As the band paused for a break, Doug stepped onto the stage, microphone in hand. He cleared his throat, the room quieting as all eyes turned toward him.
“Good evening, everyone,” Doug began, his voice warm and steady. “Thank you all for coming out tonight. As most of you know, this town means the world to me. And tonight, I want to share something that’s been making my world even brighter lately.”
A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd as Doug gestured for Nancy to join him. She walked to his side, her emerald dress shimmering under the lights, and smiled warmly at the audience.
“Nancy and I have been spending quite a bit of time together,” Doug continued, his cheeks tinged pink. “And I’m thrilled to say we’re officially going steady.”
The room erupted into applause and cheers, though a few gasps of playful surprise could be heard .
“And,” Doug added, raising a hand for silence, “Nancy has also decided to retire this May so we can spend more time together. Our first big adventure? A trip to the Bigfoot Convention in June.”
Laughter rippled through the crowd, with more than a few raised eyebrows and knowing smiles. Nancy chimed in, her voice light with humor. “Don’t worry, separate hotel rooms, of course.”
Emily clapped along with the others, her heart full as she watched Doug and Nancy take a bow. The community’s love and support for them were palpable, a testament to the kind of place Mistletoe Hollow was.
As the band resumed playing, Emily found herself drifting toward the edge of the room, where the noise and energy felt a little less overwhelming. She was happy—truly happy—but a small part of her couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing. She thought of Noah, wondering where he was in the bustling room and whether he’d noticed her tonight.
“Lost in thought?” a familiar voice asked.
Emily turned to see Noah standing a few feet away, his charcoal suit and crisp white shirt making him look effortlessly handsome. His blue eyes held a warmth that sent her heart racing.
“Just taking it all in,” she said, her voice softer than she intended.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked, stepping closer.
She nodded, her cheeks warming as he fell into step beside her. For a moment, they stood in comfortable silence, watching the crowd.
“You look beautiful tonight,” Noah said, his voice quiet but sincere.
Emily glanced at him, her breath catching at the way he was looking at her—like she was the only person in the room. “Thank you. You clean up pretty well yourself.”
Before either of them could say more, Mrs. Hart’s voice rang out over the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention, please!”
The room hushed as Mrs. Hart took the stage, beaming as she addressed the crowd. “Tonight, we have a very special tradition to uphold. Each year, we honor someone who has gone above and beyond for our community. Someone whose kindness, dedication, and hard work make Mistletoe Hollow the wonderful place it is. ”
Emily clapped along with the others, a smile tugging at her lips. She’d always loved this part of the gala, though she never expected to be the center of it.
“This year,” Mrs. Hart continued, her eyes sparkling, “our recipient is someone who has truly touched the heart of this town. From their tireless efforts on the community garden to their boundless generosity, they’ve made an extraordinary impact. Please join me in congratulating Emily Bradford!”
Emily froze. The spotlight swung toward her, and a wave of shock and disbelief washed over her. Applause filled the room, and she felt Noah’s hand on her back, gently urging her forward.
“Go,” he said, his voice warm and encouraging.
Heart pounding, Emily made her way to the stage, her cheeks burning as she accepted the bouquet of roses Mrs. Hart handed her. She turned to the crowd, her voice trembling as she spoke.
“Thank you,” she said, her words faltering under the weight of her emotions. “This means so much to me. Mistletoe Hollow has become my home in every way that matters, and I couldn’t have done any of this without all of you. Thank you for making me feel like I belong.”
The applause was deafening as she stepped down from the stage, tears brimming in her eyes. She barely had time to catch her breath before the band struck up a familiar tune— “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
The crowd parted, revealing Noah standing at the center of the dance floor. He held something in his hand, and Emily’s breath caught as she realized what it was—a small velvet box.
The music faded, and Noah’s voice carried through the silence. “Emily,” he began, his tone steady but thick with emotion, “you’ve changed everything for me. You’ve shown me what it means to belong, to love, and to believe in something bigger than myself. You made me want to stop running and start building a future—here, with you.”
Tears spilled down Emily’s cheeks as he dropped to one knee, opening the box to reveal a glittering diamond ring.
“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said, his voice raw. “Emily Bradford, will you marry me? ”
The world seemed to hold its breath as Emily stared down at him, her heart full to bursting. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind—how he’d come into her life when she least expected it, how he’d seen her for who she truly was, how he’d made her believe in love again.
“Yes,” she said, her voice clear and unwavering. “Yes, I will.”
Noah rose swiftly, his movements filled with purpose as he swept her into his arms. The room blurred around her as he tilted her back slightly, his hand cradling her cheek. And then, in a moment that felt like magic, he kissed her.
The kiss was soft and sweet, yet it carried a depth of feeling that stole her breath. It was the kind of kiss that whispered promises of forever, that spoke of a love rooted not just in passion but in trust, respect, and unwavering devotion. Emily’s fingers curled into his lapel, holding him close as the world around them seemed to melt away.
When they finally parted, the room erupted into cheers, the townsfolk celebrating alongside them. Emily gazed into Noah’s eyes, her heart overflowing with joy .
“I love you,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
“I love you too,” Noah replied, his smile as radiant as the twinkling lights above them.
And in that moment, surrounded by the love and warmth of Mistletoe Hollow, Emily knew she’d found her forever.
