Chapter Thirty-Eight Lucifer
Chapter Thirty-Eight
Lucifer
It’s sometime later, once Charlotte is already asleep, that I finally find the strength to leave her. I could watch her sleep for hours. Days, even. Time passes in a blink for immortals. And tonight, she’s more at peace than I’ve ever seen her. I can’t help but think that’s at least in small part thanks to me. And I take a deep pride in it.
How she feels for me. It’s perhaps the greatest thing I’ve ever accomplished.
But I can’t help but wonder if she still will. Feel that way for me, that is. Once we reach our ending.
Astaroth joins me as I pour myself a drink beside the piano. I’ve never played as poignantly as I did while Charlotte was listening tonight.
I’m uncertain if I’ll ever be able to replicate it.
“We’ve found him. The Handler.” Astaroth scoffs a little at the nickname.
I turn toward Astaroth. “Good,” I say. “Put him on ice for me.”
Astaroth nods, then exits, once again leaving me alone.
I can’t help myself as I glance toward the sky once more, the taste of my whisky bitter on my tongue and my heart pounding as I address my now-absent Father. “This is only the beginning.” I take a sip of my whisky. “You’ll see.”
