Chapter Forty-Four
I stopped the car in front of the café and walked up to the closed door, knocking on the glass. The girl me and Kinsley talked to the last time we were here glanced up from what she was doing behind the counter and hurried to the door. I was here to ask her if she had the chance to talk to her mother while also staying close to Kinsley. Two birds with one stone.
“We are closed,” she said but still opened the door for me.
“I saw,” I replied, glaring at the closed sign hanging on the door before I slid inside. I quickly looked around the room and noted how much more I liked it without people being here before I turned back to the girl.
“You sure took your sweet time to get here.” She studied me. “You guys said it was urgent when we last talked.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?” I asked, and she crossed her arms.
“I sent you a message the day after you were here,” she said, and I flexed my hands. “My mother remembered some details.”
“No, you didn’t,” I replied, shaking my head slightly, and she made a face at me.
“I asked for your number from my sister and her girlfriend, and Cora gave it to me from some weird group chat,” she added, and I let out a frustrated breath.
“Okay, I never got your message.” I pressed my lips into a hard line. “Could I talk to your mother now?” I asked, and she sighed.
“You don’t need to,” she answered, hurrying away toward the back door. “I wrote down everything,” she added, disappearing from eyesight.
I took a seat at the bar and tapped on the glass of my watch while I waited for her to return. In less than a minute, she rushed back with a notepad in her hand and placed it down in front of me.
“She said she remembers that day vividly because of the strange experience she had.”
“Thank you.” I lifted the notepad, my eyes unfocusing for a moment before I actually started to read the words.
