CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

The next day was Halloween, and all of us booksellers (except for Stephen) dressed up.

I wore the same Kiki costume—red bow and blue dress—that I had worn every year to the library.

After work, I soared on my bike like a broomstick through the crunchy leaves and boisterous trick-or-treaters in Macon’s neighborhood, thinking I’d help him hand out candy.

Wondering if he’d had time for a jack-o’-lantern.

Wondering if he’d carved them friendly or scary.

His lights were off.

I flew home.
