Chapter 13, Aria

The world dissolved from a warm, dreamless haze into a sudden, shocking reality.

One moment, Aria was adrift in a sea of exhausted sleep, her body curled against the solid warmth of Thorne’s chest.

The next, a violent convulsion ripped through him, a guttural snarl tearing from his throat that was nothing like a human sound.

The mattress bucked beneath her as a massive weight launched itself from the bed.

Aria was thrown against the sheets, her heart seizing in her chest. She scrambled backward, her hands slipping on the silk, until her back slammed against the hard wood of the headboard. She gasped, her eyes flying open, trying to make sense of the chaos in the dim, fire-lit room.

Where Thorne had been, a creature now stood.

It was a wolf, but larger than any she had ever imagined.

Its fur was the color of midnight, so black it seemed to drink the light, its muscles coiled and powerful beneath the sleek coat.

It stood on all fours, its shoulders nearly level with the top of the bed, and it was panting, its breath coming in great, heaving gusts that sounded like a forge bellows.

The air crackled with a wild, untamed energy, the scent of predator and ozone thick in the room.

Terror, pure and paralyzing, seized her. This was it. This was the monster. This was the beast she had been warned about, the creature that lived beneath the skin of the man. Her breath caught in her throat, a silent scream trapped behind her teeth.

The wolf’s head snapped in her direction, and two glowing silver eyes fixed on her. They were the same piercing grey as Thorne’s, but they were filled with a wild, panicked agony. It took a stumbling step toward her, its claws clicking softly on the floorboards.

“Thorne?” she whispered, her voice a trembling thread of sound. “Thorne, wake up!” Aria squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the attack, a small, choked sob escaping her lips. She could feel the heat of its body, the vibration of its growl in the floor.

The wolf froze, its head tilting as if trying to understand her words. It let out a low, pained whine, a sound so full of distress that it cut through her fear. It took another step, its tail tucked between its legs, its whole posture radiating confusion, not aggression.

But the growl wasn’t a growl. It was another whine, softer this time, closer. She felt a puff of warm air against her knuckles and slowly, hesitantly, opened her eyes.

The wolf was right in front of her, its massive head lowered, its grey eyes fixed on her face.

It wasn’t snarling. It wasn’t baring its teeth.

It was just… watching her, with an expression that looked unnervingly like pleading.

She looked deeper, past the fur and the fangs, and she saw it.

She saw the man. It was in the eyes—the same intense, haunted grey she had stared at across the dining table, the same eyes that had watched her with a possessive hunger in the shower.

This wasn’t a monster. This was Thorne, trapped and terrified.

Something inside her, a instinct stronger than fear, took over. Her terror didn’t vanish, but it was pushed aside by a wave of empathy so powerful it made her ache. He was lost. He was scared. And he needed her.

Slowly, carefully, she extended a trembling hand, palm up, a gesture of peace.

The wolf’s eyes widened, and it flinched back slightly, but it didn’t run.

It watched her hand, then looked back at her eyes.

It took a hesitant step forward and gently, so gently, licked her palm with a warm, rough tongue.

Aria let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.

The touch was startling, but not aggressive.

It was a question. A plea. She lowered her hand and began to stroke the thick fur on its head, her fingers sinking into the soft, dense ruff around his neck.

The wolf leaned into her touch, a low rumble starting in its chest—not a growl of threat, but a purr of contentment.

It nuzzled its massive head against her leg, rubbing its cheek against her thigh like a house cat.

A smile, hesitant and disbelieving, touched her lips.

She continued to pet him, her strokes becoming more confident, moving down his powerful back, feeling the tense muscles slowly begin to relax.

He was magnificent, a creature of pure, primal beauty, and he was hers.

This wild, powerful beast was seeking comfort from her.

He shifted, nudging her hand with his nose, then lifted his head and gave her face a long, wet swipe of his tongue, from her chin to her forehead.

Aria gasped, then burst out laughing. It was a real, genuine laugh, the first one she had felt since this whole ordeal began.

The sound was bright and clear in the quiet room.

“Ugh, stop!” she giggled, pushing his massive head away. “You’re drooling all over me!” He whined playfully and tried to lick her again, and she pushed him away again, her laughter echoing off the stone walls. She looked into his grey eyes, a playful glint in her own.

“You know,” she teased, her voice soft and full of wonder, “I almost like you better this way. You’re much less of an arrogant ass when you’re furry.”

The moment the words left her lips, the air in the room seemed to crackle.

The wolf froze, its body going rigid. A low groan rumbled in its chest, a sound of pain, not pleasure.

The fur began to recede, melting back into skin with a sickening, wet sound.

Bones cracked and reset, muscles and sinew twisting and reforming with a speed that was both mesmerizing and horrifying.

Aria scrambled back, her laughter dying in her throat, her eyes wide with shock. In a matter of seconds, the magnificent wolf was gone.

In its place, kneeling on the floor before her, was Thorne.

He was naked, his body slick with a sheen of sweat, his chest heaving as he struggled for breath.

His dark hair was plastered to his forehead, and his face was a mask of torment.

But it was his eyes that held her captive.

They were still that same wild, predatory grey, but now they were filled with a raw, undisguised hunger that had nothing to do with food.

And he was undeniably, powerfully aroused.

Aria’s breath hitched. The playful, comforting moment was shattered, replaced by a tension so thick she could feel it pressing against her skin.

She was no longer petting a lost wolf. She was staring at a very naked, very aroused man who was also a very powerful Alpha.

And he was looking at her like she was the only thing in the world that could sate the fire burning in his soul.
