Chapter Sixteen
Sleep did not come to me last night.
After Aubrey’s text, I did a full walk around the property. I found nothing but I still sat on my porch with my laptop to get work done and keep an eye on her cabin. It took everything in me not to just show up at her door and force my way in to spend the night with her.
But what made it worse was the email I got from Nolan. It included a link to my blog post with the photo of Aubrey. He threatened her in a way to get to me. And it fucking worked.
The coincidence that she thinks she heard something outside with the timing that email was sent, is too much for me to ignore. He’s going to follow through. I’m a big enough threat to him that he’s serious about stopping me.
I won’t let him win though. And I won’t let him get to my girls.
Me: Nolan is threatening to get to Aubrey. >
Liam: What are we doing about this?
Wyatt: Need me to file something? I mean it’s just an email with a link to your blog so I’d tell you that there is really nothing we can do. But.
Hunter: No. We can handle this Keaton style.
Me: Just wait until I talk to my lawyer. I just wanted you to be aware of it. In case you see anything you shouldn’t be seeing you’ll know. Do we have anyone from Boston checking in? Anyone who could be working with Nolan?
Liam: I’ll check, but we get a lot of bookings from Boston so I don’t know if I’d be able to tell the difference between Nolan and just our regular guests.
Wyatt: I’ll help you check-in when I’m not on shift. If they see a uniform they might act differently if they’re here for something they shouldn’t be.
Hunter: Good plan, Wy. I’ll try to stop by when you’re on shift. Just to walk around. I can be in any place with my toolbelt and people don’t think twice about it. They keep talking like I’m not there.
Me: Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I’m probably being paranoid.
Hunter: If it were Evelyn, there is no being paranoid. We’ve got you, brother.
Wyatt: I’m a cop. I think everyone is up to no good. So no paranoia here, also no trust.
As much shit as they like to give me, I know they have my back.
I haven’t heard from Aubrey yet, but I also haven’t seen any movement in their kitchen. Being that it’s only six-thirty in the morning, I doubt she’s up yet.
Me: Just checking on you this morning. Hear anything else?
Aubrey: Nope. I’m just being silly. Sometimes living on your own just makes you a little jumpy when the house creaks.
Me: I get it. But don’t hesitate to message me. I’ll be there in seconds. How is the little princess this morning?
Aubrey: You mean monster? She was up at five. I made her lay in bed with me and watch a movie. Are you sure you want us to go away with you? You’ll have to get up early and be tired non-stop. And watch Scooby-Doo on repeat.
Me: So sure, gorgeous. Never been more sure of anything in my life. I can’t wait to get uninterrupted time with my girls. >
I see Aubrey in the kitchen window getting her coffee ready. I add buying her blinds to my list of things to do today.
But that list is going to have to wait until after a nap. So are all the emails I never got to last night.
