AMAND #2

The realization moves across Lev’s face quickly, anger cutting through the panic. “You are hurting him because you want to see if I develop another response.”

Gerald finally looks away from the monitor. “The exposure is controlled. I know the limits of the field, and I can terminate it before lasting damage occurs.”

I laugh despite the pressure dragging through my magic. “Knowing when you plan to stop doesn't make this controlled for the people you strapped into the room.”

The field tightens again, and Rowan’s restraint flashes when he pulls hard enough to trigger the suppression built into it. Lev’s camouflage spreads farther over his arms before he catches himself, and I watch the panic in his expression sharpen into something more deliberate.

“He thinks you're automatic,” I tell him, keeping my voice as steady as I can. “He thinks all he has to do is threaten one of us, wait for your designation to panic, and record whatever comes out.”

Gerald turns back toward the monitor. “The bond has already demonstrated that pattern repeatedly. Extreme threat produces your strongest adaptive responses.”

“No,” I say, refusing to let Lev look away from me. “You have demonstrated that you only pay attention to what happens after you create the threat. That doesn't mean you understand why he responds or what he chooses to do with it.”

Lev stops fighting the reaction in the way Gerald expects him to. His breathing slows, the wild fluctuation in his scent eases, and Rowan stops pulling against his restraint long enough to watch him closely.

Something passes between the three of us through the bond, subtle enough that Gerald misses it because he is still staring at the screen. Lev’s scent changes again, but this time there is too much precision in it for panic.

The monitor reacts immediately.

His Chameleon signature climbs, and another magical pattern starts threading through it until the sensors begin registering something close enough to my Basilisk magic that Gerald leans toward the display. “That is different from the previous responses. Hold it there.”

Lev looks at me instead of him, and the corner of his mouth twitches just enough for me to understand. He isn't developing anything new. He is taking an ability Gerald already knows he possesses and feeding the system exactly the result Gerald came here hoping to see.

I let my head rest back against the station for a second and finally understand the advantage Gerald handed us. He built the entire room around the assumption that Lev’s magic would tell him the truth, and Lev is a Chameleon.

Rowan catches on next. He stops wrenching uselessly against the restraint and lowers his attention to the clasp instead, testing the small amount of movement it gives him without putting enough force behind it to trigger the ward.

I follow his lead and look down at my own, realizing the system reacts hardest when it senses either a burst of magic or direct resistance.

So we stop fighting it the way Gerald expects.

Lev feeds another false surge through the sensors, threading enough of my Basilisk signature through his own to make the monitors react.

Gerald leans closer to the data, completely focused on whatever new development he thinks he is witnessing, while Rowan works his wrist toward the narrow seam where the magical conductor meets the physical clasp.

The ward shifts more power toward Lev’s station as his false reading climbs, and Rowan feels the change at the same moment I do. He twists hard while the system is compensating elsewhere, ripping one restraint loose from its mounting instead of trying to overpower the magic holding it closed.

The alarm starts immediately. I drive my heel into the base of my station and wrench sideways at the same moment, tearing my right hand free with a sharp burst of pain while Rowan reaches across the gap toward Lev.

Lev keeps feeding the monitors the same false spike while Rowan tears the central restraint assembly sideways. The first clasp breaks, then the second, and Lev is out of the chair before Gerald finishes realizing the system is no longer holding all three of us.

That is when Lev disappears. The monitors still insist his signature is sitting in the center station even while the chair is visibly empty, and Gerald looks from the readings to the broken restraints with the first genuine confusion I have ever seen on his face.

Rowan uses the distraction to rip his second restraint free, then intercepts the first security agent through the door before anyone can reach Lev’s empty station. I tear my other arm loose and head for the console just as Gerald reaches across it to shut down the system.

He steps into my path, apparently forgetting that I'm still a Basilisk even if his equipment is currently doing its best to convince my body otherwise. I hit him hard enough to put him on the floor, then reach across the console and kill the field pulling at my magic.

My Basilisk surges back through me so violently that I have to brace myself against the equipment until the room stops shifting around me.

Rowan’s own magic swells in response, his body beginning to change before I catch his attention and tell him, “Keep the room standing. Everything in here is evidence.”

That brings him back just enough to stop the shift, although the look he gives Gerald makes it clear he considers the room a negotiable loss. Gerald pushes himself upright against the base of the console and looks past us toward Lev’s empty station.

“You are proving the theory,” he says. “You were placed under controlled pressure and developed a response capable of defeating the containment system.”

Lev’s voice comes from somewhere behind him. “No, we're proving you're embarrassingly easy to distract when somebody gives you a pretty graph.”

Gerald turns toward the sound, and Lev appears long enough to reach across the console and pull the primary data drive before fading again. The monitor still registers him in the center station, which seems to bother Gerald almost as much as Lev stealing the drive directly in front of him.

Security fills the doorway before Rowan can reach Gerald, but he plants himself between them and the rest of us instead.

I take the drive from Lev when he reappears beside me and hold it where the agents can see it.

“Before anyone decides Gerald is the person who needs protecting, take a look around this room. He built it for three bonded subjects who had already explicitly refused to participate in his research, then brought us here under magical suppression and used me to provoke a reaction from Lev.”

Gerald gets fully to his feet and straightens his clothes as though dignity might somehow repair the situation. “This is classified Essence research conducted under my authority.”

Lev stays beside me this time, one hand finding the back of my shirt before he looks at the broken restraints around us. “You strapped us into chairs after we told you to stop. I think the technical term has moved past research.”

I pull my phone out and finally find a signal strong enough to use.

The files Rowan and I copied are still there, and I attach everything from Gerald’s original research before adding the records from this facility and sending them beyond anyone he can quietly control.

Essence administration gets them, along with internal security, legal, and the external oversight contact listed in agency policy.

Gerald hears the first notification sound from somewhere in the corridor and looks sharply toward me. “What did you send?”

“Everything you thought you could keep contained.” I put my phone away while more devices begin sounding outside the room. “You don't get to decide who sees the evidence anymore.”

He turns toward the security team and orders them to contain us, but nobody immediately moves. The hesitation spreads quickly as phones continue chiming in the hallway and the people closest to the doorway begin reading whatever has just reached them.

Gerald looks from one agent to another before his attention returns to Lev. “You still adapted to the containment.”

Lev gives a quiet laugh and moves closer to Rowan and me.

“You still don't fucking get it. I used abilities I already had. I can manipulate magical signatures, I can disappear, and I know your machines are reading my magic instead of climbing inside my head. Rowan figured out how to break the physical restraint without fighting the ward, and Amand figured out what you were doing before you got the reaction you wanted.”

Gerald gestures toward the broken stations and the corrupted readings. “You coordinated those abilities in direct response to pressure. You can call that planning if you prefer, but the underlying mechanism is still adaptive.”

“Of course we responded to pressure. You kidnapped us and strapped us into your creepy basement.” Lev rolls his eyes, but the anger underneath it stays sharp. “That doesn't mean you created what happened next. We talked to each other. We trusted each other. We made a fucking plan.”

Rowan comes up behind Lev and settles one hand at the back of his neck while I move close enough that my shoulder presses against Lev’s. His magic settles almost immediately between us, but this time I'm watching Gerald when it happens as his gaze drops toward the contact.

Lev catches Rowan’s wrist with one hand and slides his other arm around my waist, deliberately pulling both of us closer.

“You almost killed my man for a test,” he says, quieter now but somehow sharper for it.

“Rowan could not breathe because his lungs were turning to stone, and you still think the fact that I saved him makes the risk acceptable.”

Gerald’s expression doesn't change. “Rowan survived. The countermeasure worked, and the damage was reversible.”
