Chapter 14

—Kasey—

The voice was a fraction louder today. A little closer than it had been before. Still, I couldn’t get a grip on it. It came and went like a restless tide, coinciding with the soft brushing sensation on my cheek. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t hold it in focus. I heard words that wouldn’t compute, mixing with the various strikes of pain through my entire body. I tried to call out, but something wedged in my throat made it impossible.

It didn’t make sense. None of it did.

I fought toward the surface. Swam through invisible glue that hung from my limbs, weighing me down into the yawing void beneath me. In an effort to break free, I struggled hard. Threw myself forward with every ounce of strength I could summon.

It sucked what little fight I had left from my weary body.

Without an alternative option, I succumbed to the lure of dullness.
