Chapter LVIII - Beyond Reason

The carriage swayed softly through falling snow.

Inside, Prince Rui held Shen Li against him while warm lantern light flickered across dark silk and winter shadows.

And between them lingered his quiet confession.

“This prince thinks he already crossed the point of reason regarding you.”

Shen Li’s heartbeat softened painfully.

Because Prince Rui no longer hid it at all now.

Not his attachment. Not his possessiveness. Not the terrifying depth of his feelings.

Dangerous man.

Very dangerous man.

Shen Li looked up slowly from where she rested against his chest.

Then softly:

“Your Highness says this like it’s unfortunate.”

Prince Rui’s fingers brushed lightly through her hair. “It is dangerous.”

“For whom?”

Prince Rui actually looked thoughtful afterward.

Then calmly:

“Everyone else.”

Silence.

Then Shen Li laughed helplessly against him.

Prince Rui’s gaze immediately softened further hearing it.

Because lately— her laughter had become addictive.

Dangerously addictive.

The carriage quieted afterward beneath soft snowfall and distant city lanterns.

Then suddenly Prince Rui’s expression shifted slightly.

More serious now.

His thumb brushed once slowly against her waist beneath layered robes.

“Tonight changed things.”

Shen Li understood immediately.

The banquet.

The performance. The confrontation. The public attachment.

Nothing remained hidden anymore.

Prince Rui continued quietly:

“The palace now understands this prince values you beyond politics.”

Shen Li lowered her gaze slightly. “…Will that create more danger?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then Prince Rui tilted her chin upward gently.

His eyes remained calm despite the answer.

“But this prince would still choose the same.”

The certainty inside his voice touched her chest painfully.

Because Prince Rui never regretted loving her.

Not once.

Not even knowing it made him vulnerable.

Dangerous man.

Then softly— before she fully thought through the words—

Shen Li admitted:

“This daughter would choose the same too.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Prince Rui stared at her.

And suddenly— for the first time tonight—

the terrifying war prince genuinely looked emotionally overwhelmed.

Tiny pause. Barely noticeable.

Enough.

Because Shen Li rarely said things directly first.

Yet now she sat inside his arms quietly admitting she would choose him despite danger too.

Something inside Prince Rui’s chest tightened so fiercely it almost hurt.

Then slowly— very carefully—

he pressed his forehead lightly against hers.

And closed his eyes briefly.

As though steadying himself.

His voice lowered afterward.

“Princess Rui.”

“You truly intend to destroy this prince completely.”

The vulnerability hidden beneath the words nearly unraveled her.

Shen Li reached up softly and touched the scar near his jaw again.

Habit now.

Dangerous habit.

Prince Rui immediately turned slightly into her touch instinctively.

The realization made warmth spread through her chest.

Then quietly she whispered:

“Your Highness already survived battlefields.”

“Surely surviving one wife is easier.”

Prince Rui opened his eyes slowly afterward.

Then unexpectedly— laughed.

Warm. Real. Hopelessly in love.

The sound filled the small carriage softly enough to feel intimate.

Then he murmured near her fingers:

“No.”

“This is far worse.”

When they finally returned to Prince Rui’s estate, snow had deepened heavily across the courtyard paths.

Yet neither moved immediately after the carriage stopped.

The warmth inside felt too dangerous to leave easily.

Prince Rui still held Shen Li close while silence settled softly around them.

Then suddenly— outside the carriage—

a guard’s voice sounded urgently.

“Your Highness.”

The atmosphere cooled instantly.

Prince Rui’s expression sharpened. “What happened?”

The guard lowered his voice. “A palace servant from Consort Xu’s residence was discovered dead near the eastern palace gate.”

Silence crashed through the carriage.

Prince Rui’s eyes darkened immediately.

Shen Li felt it too.

The shift. The danger.

Then the guard continued carefully:

“Before dying…”

“The servant carried records connected to the poisoned banquet robes.”

The temperature dropped violently.

Because someone was cleaning evidence now.

Fast.

Too fast.

Prince Rui’s arm around Shen Li tightened instinctively.

Protective again.

Possessive again.

Then very quietly— dangerously quietly—

he said:

“The palace finally grows impatient.”

Shen Li looked toward him steadily. “You believe Consort Xu ordered the servant silenced.”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then Prince Rui’s gaze lowered toward her face again.

And suddenly— all the warmth from earlier returned beneath terrifying calm.

Because now he looked at her like someone standing between wolves and the one thing worth protecting.

Then softly:

“This prince no longer wants leaving you alone inside that palace.”

The honesty hurt unexpectedly.

Shen Li touched his sleeve lightly. “This daughter isn’t afraid.”

Prince Rui stared at her silently.

Then after one long pause:

“That’s the problem.”

Because fearless Shen Li— calm, gentle, willing to stand beside him against danger—

made him love her too much already.

And somewhere deep inside—

Prince Rui finally understood something terrifying.

If Shen Li were harmed because of him—

he truly would burn the empire down afterward.
