Chapter 9 #2

She circles back to Arthur's text, the timeline he mentioned, the expanded access and its implications.

She's been thinking about it for days, running the data through the corrected lens, the one that started forming after my jaw betrayed me in her kitchen.

She isn't presenting the Renaud argument anymore.

She's circling something bigger, and the orbit is tightening.

I should tell her tonight. In this loft, with the city light on the ceiling and her voice getting closer to the answer with every sentence, I should open my mouth and hand her the last piece. The piece that puts me on the wrong side of the timeline. The piece she'll find herself if I wait too long.

The IPA goes down. The conversation narrows. She's on the couch, bare feet pulled up beneath her, shoes abandoned by the door. I'm beside her, near enough that the gap is a choice and we both know it.

"Where did you grow up?" she asks.

The question is quiet, delivered in the voice she uses when she's testing whether a door is locked. It's the first personal question she's asked me that has no operational justification.

The redirect fires before I can stop it. "South Side" comes out clean, factual, a geographic answer to a personal question. I could leave it there. She'd let me. The professional exchange ends on a zip code.

"Where on the South Side?" She doesn't let me leave it there.

"Back of the Yards." The name lands like a piece of evidence I didn't intend to present. Two miles and a lifetime from the loft we're sitting in.

"And now you live here." She looks around the space without judgment, measuring the distance by what it cost.

"I live here because I chose every piece of it. I inherited nothing, carried nothing over. Nobody else's damage or furniture."

The sentence opens me further than I planned, and the exposure has no frame to grip.

She's watching me the way she watches Arthur when he's about to give something away. The comparison sends a cold chill down my spine, because I’m about to give something away, and the question is whether I give her the thing she's asking for or the thing she needs to know.

She sets down the bottle. She leans toward me, and the gap that was a choice stops being one.

The second time is different from the first.

In her apartment, the urgency was weeks of compressed want finally detonating.

Here, in my loft, the pace is slower. She's exploring, unbuttoning my shirt and pushing it off my shoulders.

Her hands travel the topography of my chest, my arms, the scar she found last time and returns to now with a familiarity that makes the tissue less damage and more landmark.

When her mouth follows her touch to the scar, I stop breathing. Nobody has ever put their lips there.

Her mouth doesn't stop at the scar. She traces the ridge of muscle below it, then lower, her lips following the line that runs from my ribs to my hip. Her hands work my belt while her mouth stays on my skin, and the efficiency of it tells me she planned this before she walked through the door. When she wraps her hand around me, the grip is firm and specific, and the intake of breath that comes out of me isn’t something I would permit anyone else to hear.

She takes me in her mouth and the world narrows to the heat of her, the wet pressure, the slow drag of her lips down the length of me.

She is thorough. She reads my responses the way she reads a room, adjusting the pace when my breathing catches, holding pressure where my hips jerk, and the precision of her attention while I'm losing the capacity for any attention at all inverts every dynamic we've built. I’m not directing this.

She is on her knees on my couch with her hand braced on my thigh and her mouth taking me apart, and the woman who analyzes data for a living is applying that same focus to the systematic destruction of my self-control.

My hand goes to her hair. I don't guide.

I hold on, because holding on is the only thing left that keeps me from losing this completely.

When she takes me deeper and her tongue does something deliberate along the underside that makes my vision blur, I pull her up.

The sound of her mouth releasing me is obscene in the quiet loft, and the look she gives me when I bring her to my level is pure challenge.

"I wasn't finished," she says.

"I know." My voice comes out wrecked. "If you finish, I won't be able to do what I need to do to you."

The challenge in her expression sharpens into something hotter. She lets me pull her beneath me.

I shed the rest of my clothes and take my time with her, undressing her slowly until there is nothing between us but the heat of the night.

My mouth goes to her breast, and I close my lips over her nipple with enough pressure to arch her back off the couch.

I stay there, tonguing the peak while my hand covers the other breast, rolling the second nipple between my thumb and forefinger until she's gripping the cushion with white knuckles.

I move my mouth to the other side and give it the same thorough treatment, and the sounds she's making have shifted from controlled to desperate.

My lips trace the tendon in her neck, the hollow of her throat where her pulse hammers against my tongue. My mouth moves lower, down the center of her stomach, pressing open-mouthed kisses into the skin below her navel while my hand slides along her inner thigh.

When I press my thumb into the soft skin halfway to her hip, her whole body rolls toward me, instinctive, the motion starting in her hips before she can decide whether to let it happen.

She makes a noise that is small and surprised, and the surprise in it tells me nobody has taken the time to find this before.

I stay there. I let her absorb the pressure until her thighs open wider and the surprise becomes demand.

When I finally press inside her, the pace stays slow, and the sensation of entering her at this speed is so concentrated it strips the thought from my head.

She is tight, slick, and the slow drag of her body gripping me on every inch of the stroke makes my arms shake where they're braced on either side of her.

Her legs wrap around me, and the angle is deep enough that her forehead drops against my shoulder and her breath comes in bursts against my collarbone.

I hold the rhythm instead of chasing it.

Each stroke presses deep, withdraws to the point where her hips lift to follow, then returns with a deliberation that makes both of us absorb every fraction of it.

The restraint is different this time. In her apartment the hunger ran the show.

Here, the slowness is a choice, and the choice is costing me.

I want every second of this. The wanting is a kind of vulnerability I don't have the equipment to process.

Her muscles respond to the pace with a building tension I can read from the inside.

They tighten around me in increments, her breathing shortening with each stroke, and the gradual grip of her pulling me deeper is the most precise feedback I’ve ever received from another person.

I adjust the angle by a degree, tilting my hips until the base of me grinds where she needs the pressure, and the moan she releases against my shoulder is low enough that I catch it through the bone.

She lifts her head. Her gaze holds mine, and the look on her face is the one I’m most afraid of.

The desire is there. The sharp intelligence that reads me in every room is there.

But underneath both is something open, and the openness asks a question that has nothing to do with the case or the conspiracy that has been the excuse for every hour we've spent together.

The tenderness that surfaces when she traces my jaw is the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me in this loft, and the list isn’t short.

Her thumb follows the muscle along the hinge, the tell she's been reading for weeks, and the gentleness of the touch makes it impossible to hold the composure I usually hold with her.

My expression is in her hands and the mask is slipping and the woman underneath me can see it happening in real time.

I bury myself in her neck and let the rhythm carry us both somewhere I don't have a name for.

The pace shifts without either of us deciding it, a gradual acceleration that builds from the hips, and the friction changes from deliberate to desperate in a way that follows the crack in my composure.

She digs into my back, her heels pressing harder into my thighs, and the tightening around me becomes rhythmic, a pulse that tells me she is near the edge before her breathing does.

When she comes, the gasp is quieter than last time, barely more than an exhale, and the intimacy of that in this large room does more damage to my containment than all the urgency in her apartment did.

Her inner muscles lock around me in slow, gripping waves, and the sensation of being held inside her while her orgasm moves through her pulls my own climax forward with a force I can’t pace or redirect.

The release hits me from the base of my spine and rolls through me with a heaviness that empties my lungs, my fists, my capacity to pretend I am anything other than a man who is falling and has stopped caring where he lands.

I come inside her with her name in my teeth and my mouth on her throat, and the landing is still in a way that scares me more than the fall.
