CHAPTER 47

Anna

M y eyes creaked open, filled with sleep. Light trickled in, scaring away the darkness. Warmth enveloped me as Reign’s steady breathing rose and fell against my back.

In such a short time, I felt like I’d really come to know him. Even learned a few things about myself. Some of the things horrified me, but I couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that Reign was meant to be my person. Last night made me feel even closer to him, and after knowing his past, I was even more proud of the fact that he never forcibly took someone like his dad did.

But I hated that both of us had such repulsive childhoods.

“You’re awake, my love,” his voice layered with sleep as he stretched his arms around me, pulling me closer. “Should I worry about you leaving me?”

His words sent alarm bells ringing in my mind. “Why would I do that?”

“The blood of a monster runs through my veins.” No longer sounding tired, he continued, “What if one day I become just like him? I’m already halfway there. ”

A hint of sorrow hearkened his tone.

“I don’t think you’ll ever be like him.” I shifted in the bed to face him. “You have me now.” I kissed him gently. His pupils expanded, leaving a thin line of blue as he gazed at me. “We can both start over together. So maybe find a new outlet. Murder isn’t a hobby.” The old me would’ve been ashamed to joke about human life with such disregard. But Reign awoke something inside of me that defied all logic.

We were more similar than I was ready to admit.

He opened his mouth to speak when my phone beeped in succession.

Who the hell would be texting me that many times?

Even Reign’s features deepened, his expression puzzled as I grabbed my phone off the nightstand. A quick look at the time told me it was still early morning, so there was no way it was Emma messaging me.

An unknown number sent me several texts. My skin prickled with gooseflesh. Reign sat up behind me, looking over my shoulder as my hands shook. I fumbled across the screen, pulling them up.

Unknown: I finally found you.

Unknown: expect to see me soon.

Unknown: you were always meant to be mine

Tears blurred my vision as the phone dropped from my quivering hands. The sound of it tumbling to the floor brought me back to the moment. Throwing myself into Reign’s safe embrace, sobs shook my body.

“What can I do?” His voice sounded like it was underwater. The vibrations reaching my ears distorted. “Tell me what to do, and I'll do anything.” Panic knotted his voice as I gulped in sharp breaths. Air wasn’t getting to my lungs. It was as if an iron fist was gripping them, robbing them of oxygen.

The frantic look in Reign’s eyes was all I could see. It was the last thing I remembered.
