Chapter 13
Kelly
My thirty-minute lunch break was almost over, and I had been happily texting with Gideon. Actually, it was spicier than texting. Some would call it sexting. I would agree with them.
Lemme just say that what was going on between us had me with my leg crossed over the other and clenching my lady parts tightly and praying no one else in the lounge noticed me.
Another message came…
Gideon: Here’s mine. Show me yours.
My eyes bulged at the picture. He’d sent me a dick pic. My very first. And boy was the head an angry red color and oozing precum.
“What a day.” Dana sat across from me. Today she was wearing scrubs with that cute little blue dog all over it because she was in the children’s wing, while I had been bouncing all over as usual.
Where there was a need, I was there. It was unconventional, but this wasn’t a state of the art, adequately staffed hospital like the one I worked at in San Francisco.
“Tell me about it.” I immediately clicked out of the image and put my phone in my pocket.
“What were your looking at? When I came in you looked in grossed and your face is flushed.” She studied me as she plucked a chip out of her bag and popped it into her mouth.
“It is?” I touched my cheeks. “Reading a steamy scene in my book,” I whispered.
She leaned forward and in a low voice said, “It must’ve been really good because girl, I know arousal on a woman’s face when I see it.
” Dana was bi-sexual, and someone I would call an acquaintance.
I liked her but still didn’t know her very well because we spent so little time together. Just a break or lunch here and there.
“Yes, the scene was that good.” I wiggled my eyebrows and pictured Gideon’s gloriously thick dick.
It wasn’t gigantic like the ten-incher mentioned in my MC romance book.
I rolled my eyes so hard when I read that.
Please, it was so not realistic. But then, why would a fictional book be realistic?
Being a nurse who’d seen plenty of dicks had ruined that moment for me.
Not that it was impossible for a man to be that well-endowed. It just wasn’t common.
“You really need to get you some if books do that to you.” She winked and bit into her sandwich. “Maybe ask the lonely biker outside in the parking lot. Neil told me he’s been sitting out there all day, and no one will tell security or call the police because he’s one of the Kings.”
If my heart could have dropped into my stomach it would have. Instead, it felt like my organs had twisted into a ball of yarn.
It couldn’t have been Gideon. And if it was him taking pictures of his dick in the hospital parking lot, I would kill him.
“What do you think he’s doing out there?” I asked Dana and took my phone out to see if Gideon was still texting me and discovered he had been and a lot.
Gideon: Are you there?
Gideon: Look if I took it too far and offended you, I’m sorry.
Gideon: Kelly?
Gideon: Please, text me or call me.
Gideon: Are you ignoring me? Dammit, Kel! Call me!!
Gideon: Fuck it. I’m going to assume you got called away.
Gideon: I’m not angry at you. Just let me know we’re okay.
Gideon: I’m sorry.
Holy shit! I should have sent him a quick text when Dana sat down telling him I needed to go. Now the poor guy was probably freaking out thinking he offended me with the dick pic, which he totally did not.
I needed to call him and assure him I was okay and we were okay.
“No idea. I went to check it out with Neil. The guy looks young. I wonder if he has a relative here. But he hasn’t come inside so I don’t know. It’s a mystery. We may never find out what he’s doing.”
“That is strange.” I put my stuff in my bag. “I need to go.”
“So soon? I just got here.”
“I know. Sorry. I have an important phone call to make before my lunch is over. I’ll catch you later today.” I patted her shoulder and I left.
“Okay, bye,” she muttered with food in her mouth.
I quickly rushed out and dialed Gideon’s number. He answered on the first ring.
“Baby, I am so sorry.”
“Gideon, stop,” I said in a low voice as tried to find a low populated area to talk to him.
“No, I am truly remorseful for my stupid pic. It’s totally a guy thing to do. I just thought we were vibing and I took it too far.”
“Gideon—”
“I mean it, baby. Please tell me I didn’t fuck things up for us.”
“You didn’t fuck things up!” I shouted, trying to get him to shut up. “Now let me talk.”
A man cleared his voice from behind me, and I cringed inside, praying it wasn’t a doctor or administrator. The last thing I needed was to get fired for being unprofessional.
I peered over my shoulder, finding an old man pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair. Probably his beloved wife. Just kill me now.
“I’m so sorry. Men can be so bullheaded,” I told them and pointed at my phone, stopping so they could pass me.
They nodded as if in full agreement with me and went on their merry way.
I decided the only safe place to talk to Gideon was outside because the hospital was too busy.
It was the middle of the day, and it was supposed to hit ninety-eight, but if I could find a shady spot, I’d be okay.
The thing I loved about California was, for the most part, it was a dry-heat state.
Not that we didn’t have humidity at all, but it wasn’t hot and sticky like the South.
“Are you there?” I asked him, even though I could see we were still connected.
“Yes, ma’am.”
I smiled at his obedience. “And you’re going to let me talk without interrupting me?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good.” I grinned, wishing I could see his face right now. “First, I’m not offended and you didn’t take things too far during our texting. My friend Dana had sat down at my table and I panicked. I put my phone away and kind of forgot about you. And for that, I apologize.”
He was quiet and didn’t respond.
“Are you there?”
“Yes. Can I talk now?” he asked in a serious, non-sarcastic tone.
“Gideon, really?” I laughed a little. “I’m not angry. We’re good. Please talk freely.”
He let out a heavy sigh. “You don’t have to apologize for anything. I freaked out. I’m not used to caring about a woman as much as I care about you.”
“That’s very sweet.”
“I don’t want to lose you, Kel.”
“We’ve been friends for a long time. I have no intention of stopping.” I turned to the right and noticed the biker Dana had mentioned.
“That’s just it. I want you as more than my friend. I thought we established that already. I don’t need a fuck buddy. I can fuck anyone I want.”
I felt the sliding doors open, and it blew a nice breeze my way.
“Hey, now. Don’t go there because I’m pretty sure I could offer myself up to the next man that exits the hospital and he’ll gladly take me home with him.” Hopefully, a very hot doctor. Nope, the old man from before appeared in front of me with a wide grin.
I shook my head and covered my face with one hand to hide my embarrassment. The old man sighed, hunching over and padded away. Oh my God. That was humiliating.
“Don’t even think about it, baby. I’ll come down there and kidnap you.”
“As long as we’re both in agreement then,” I replied, remembering the biker in the parking lot.
“We are.”
“Why is one of your MC guys sitting in the parking lot here?” I moved toward the guy to make sure he was in fact a member of the Kings of Anarchy MC.
“Because I can’t be there myself.”
“Excuse me? And why would you need to be keeping watch while I’m working?”
“Because women are going missing and I need to protect you. And since I can’t, I put a prospect on the job. He’s Corcoran and he’s very familiar with the hospital layout after standing guard after my accident.”
I digested his words for a quick second. “What do you mean women are missing?” I thought about the two nurses who didn’t show up at work for the second day. It wasn’t my place to question and dig into their business but maybe I needed to.
“I can’t tell you to much but the man who drugged Cass is Russian and he runs a sex trafficking ring.”
“What?” I shouted, then quieted, catching myself.
“Now isn’t the time to talk about this. When do you get off so I can pick you up?”
“I don’t know yet. Depends on how the evening goes. I don’t like this Gideon. You should have told me what was stressing you all this time, after all, I am a woman.”
“I was worried you’d bounce out of my life just as quickly as you bounced back into it. I’ll make it up to you tonight.”
Butterflies danced in my stomach. We hadn’t gotten to be alone together in a couple of days, and we hadn’t had sex in his bed. “But I work tomorrow, remember?”
“I want you stay at the clubhouse. I’ll bring Kevin over too, if you want.”
“Do you think he’s in danger?” Oh, I felt sick.
“Nah. The Russian is after women, not teenage boys.”
“That’s a relief.” I checked the time on my phone. “Crap, I’m late. I’ll text when to get me.”
“Okay, baby. See you later.” He ended the call and I ran into the hospital. We’d have plenty of time to work out the details and devise a plan when we were together tonight.
