Chapter 43

Chapter

Forty-Three

Winter

Ileaned against the balcony railing, letting the cool night air brush across my skin.

The lake below was a perfect mirror of the star-filled sky, each pinpoint of light duplicated in its dark surface.

My body ached from our narrow escape, from channeling so much prophetic energy, from pulling Rook back from the Harbingers' grasp.

Even now, the blue markings covering my skin pulsed gently, a constant reminder of what I'd become, what I was still becoming.

We'd barely spoken on the journey back to the cabin. Everyone was too exhausted, too shaken by what had happened. The collapse of the pocket grove, the cultists, the message from the Harbingers, it all hung over us like a storm cloud, dark and threatening.

I touched the spot over my heart where one of the blue markings felt warmer than the others, the tether connecting me to Fenric.

Each of them was different, Rook's was a steady, primal hum; Zane's an ancient, subtle vibration; Milo's a bright, flickering energy.

Fenric's was structured, orderly, yet with an undercurrent of something deeper, something he rarely showed the world.

A soft knock at my door pulled me from my thoughts.

"Come in," I didn't turn from the view.

The door opened and closed softly. I didn't need to look to know it was Fenric, I could feel him now, his presence distinct through our connection.

"You should be resting," his voice was softer than usual, lacking its bureaucratic edge.

"I can't," I still gazed at the lake. "Every time I close my eyes, I see the grove collapsing, I hear that cultist's words."

Fenric moved to stand beside me, close enough that I could feel the warmth radiating from his body. For once, he wasn't clutching his tablet. His silver-blond hair caught the moonlight, giving him an otherworldly glow.

"The others are asleep. Even Rook finally succumbed, though he fought it longer than was sensible."

I smiled faintly. "That sounds like him."

"And you should follow his example." Fenric's tone was gently admonishing, but something in it made me finally turn to look at him.

He'd changed out of his torn suit into a simple button-down shirt and slacks, still formal by most standards but practically casual for him. Without his usual bureaucratic armor, he seemed younger somehow, more vulnerable.

"Fenric," I studied his face, the fine lines at the corners of his eyes, the slight furrow between his brows that never quite disappeared. "What's wrong?"

He hesitated, his silver-blue eyes meeting mine with unusual directness. "I've come to a realization today that I find uncomfortable."

"Oh?" I raised an eyebrow, curious despite my exhaustion.

His ears pinked slightly at the tips. "When I saw you channel your power to save Rook, when I felt our connection through these marks," he touched the spot over his heart, "I was forced to confront certain feelings I've been attempting to suppress."

My heart began to beat faster, the blue markings pulsing in response. "What feelings would those be?"

Fenric turned fully toward me, his expression more open than I'd ever seen it. "Fear, primarily. Fear of what happens when one loses control, when emotion overwhelms reason. I've spent years building walls against such vulnerability."

He took a step closer, and I found myself holding my breath.

"But today," his voice dropped lower, "when reality itself was unraveling around us, when we faced dangers that defied classification, I realized something. The very control I've clung to so desperately is an illusion. We are all at the mercy of forces greater than ourselves."

"That's a terrifying thought," I winced.

"Indeed," he nodded. "Yet strangely liberating. If control is ultimately an illusion, then perhaps..." He paused, visibly struggling with words that didn't come easily to him. "Perhaps there is value in surrender."

The tension between us thickened, charged with possibilities neither of us had fully acknowledged until this moment.

"Surrender to what, exactly?" My voice barely audible over the pounding of my heart.

Fenric's hand lifted, hovering just above my cheek without touching. "To this. To you. To us. To whatever this connection between us truly means."

I leaned into his touch, his fingers finally making contact with my skin. A jolt of warmth spread from the point of connection, the blue markings brightening in response.

"I've been fighting it since the moment I met you," he confessed, his thumb tracing my cheekbone with surprising tenderness. "This inappropriate, inconvenient, entirely unprofessional attraction."

I couldn't help the small smile that curved my lips. "Is that what you call it in your reports? An 'inappropriate attraction'?"

"I don't include it in my reports at all," his own lips twitched upward. "Some things are not meant for Bureau documentation."

"I'm shocked," I teased gently. "Fenric breaking protocol? The world must truly be ending."

"Perhaps it is," his expression sobered. "Which is why I can no longer justify denying what I feel."

"And what do you feel?" I needed to hear him say it.

Fenric's eyes darkened, his composure slipping further. "Desire. Affection. A need to possess and protect that defies all logical explanation." His voice dropped to a whisper. "I want you, Winter. In ways that terrify me to my soul."

The confession hung in the air between us, raw and honest in a way I'd never expected from him. I reached up, covering his hand with mine where it rested against my cheek.

"I want you too," I closed my eyes briefly.

Something flashed in his eyes, a hunger I'd caught glimpses of before but never so openly displayed. "May I kiss you? Properly this time, not a stolen moment in a Bureau hallway."

"Yes," I held my breath.

He closed the distance between us with deliberate slowness, his free hand coming to rest at my waist. When his lips finally met mine, it was with surprising gentleness, a careful exploration rather than the desperate passion of our previous encounter.

I melted into him. The kiss deepened, Fenric's control evident even in this, his movements measured and precise as he tilted my head to a better angle, his tongue traced my lower lip with meticulous attention.

When we broke apart, his breathing was slightly uneven, the only outward sign of his affected state. "We should stop," though his hands remained firmly on my body. "You're exhausted."

"I don't want to stop," I caught the front of his shirt, keeping him close. "I've had enough of waiting, of wondering what's going to happen tomorrow. I want this, Fenric. I want you."

His eyes darkened further at my words, the silver-blue nearly swallowed by expanding pupils. "Are you certain? Once this line is crossed..."

"I'm sure," I cut him off. "The lines were crossed a long time ago for all of us. The Library made that clear."

He searched my face for a moment longer, then nodded, a decision clearly made. When he spoke again, his voice had changed, taking on an authoritative edge I'd only heard hints of before.

"Then come inside," he stepped back and guided me from the balcony into my bedroom. "And I'll show you exactly what I've been suppressing all these months."

The shift in his demeanor sent a shiver of anticipation down my spine. This was yet another side of Fenric, one I had glimpsed rarely and always wanted to see more of. As the door to the balcony closed behind us, he turned me to face him, his hands firm on my shoulders.

"If we do this," his voice was low but commanding, "we do it my way. I need control, Winter. Can you give me that?"

The question sent heat pooling low in my belly. "Yes," I nodded. "I trust you."

Something like wonder flashed across his face at my words. Then his expression settled into determined focus, his hands moving to the buttons of my blouse.

"No magic," he instructed as he methodically unfastened each button. "No prophetic energy. Just you and me, as we are."

I nodded again, already breathing faster as his knuckles brushed against my skin with each button released.

When my blouse hung open, he pushed it from my shoulders, his eyes dark with appreciation as he took in the blue markings that swirled across my skin, now visible against the simple cotton of my bra.

"Beautiful," he traced one glowing line from my collarbone to the swell of my breast. "Even your prophetic markings have a certain symmetry, an elegant structure."

His touch sent sparks of pleasure skittering across my skin. I reached for him, wanting to feel him too, but he caught my wrists in a gentle but firm grip.

"No," he shook his head. "I said my way, remember? Hands at your sides until I tell you otherwise."

The command in his voice sent another wave of heat through me, surprising in its intensity. I let my arms fall obediently to my sides, and was rewarded with a small smile of approval.

"Good," he purred, his fingers moving to the fastening of my pants. "Now step out of these."

I complied, kicking off my shoes and stepping out of my pants as he pulled them down my legs. Standing before him in just my underwear, I felt vulnerable yet strangely powerful, knowing how deeply he desired what he was seeing.

Fenric circled me slowly, his gaze appreciative but analytical, as if cataloging every detail for future reference. When he completed his circuit, he stopped directly in front of me, close enough that I could feel his breath on my face.

"On the bed," he directed, his voice soft but brooking no argument. "Lie back against the pillows."

I moved to the bed, settling myself against the headboard as instructed. The blue markings pulsed brighter with my increasing arousal, casting gentle light across the bedcovers.
