Chapter 66
Chapter
Sixty-Six
Winter
The Harbingers attacked without warning.
Not physically. They struck at something deeper, more fundamental. Reality itself became their weapon as they unleashed power that dwarfed everything I'd encountered before.
The temple chamber exploded into chaos. The weeping statues cracked and bled silver light. The floor beneath our feet buckled and writhed like living flesh. The air itself screamed as the Harbingers' stolen divinity lashed out in waves of pure destruction.
I looked at my four Keys, knowing what I had to do.
"I love you," I whispered, and with a thought, wrapped them in protective barriers of blue light and sent them flying backward, out of the chamber, away from what was about to happen.
Their shouts of protest echoed behind them as they tumbled through corridors that suddenly stretched like taffy, distance becoming meaningless under my will. Only Horrace remained beside me, my power unable to touch him, sliding off his interdimensional nature like water off stone.
He planted himself between me and the Harbingers, wings spread wide, twelve eyes blazing with defiant silver fire.
The center Harbinger raised one pale hand toward me. "You make this more difficult than necessary."
I dodged, instinctively calling upon powers I didn't fully understand. Time bent around my fingers as I reached out and grabbed hold of possibility itself. The Harbinger's attack slowed, then reversed, then scattered into probability dust.
But the left Harbinger was already moving, its form blurring as it closed the distance between us. Its fingers brushed against my arm.
The touch burned like acid through my veins.
Not physical pain, something worse. I felt centuries pile onto my bones in an instant.
My skin wrinkled, my hair went white, my joints seized with the weight of millennia.
The Harbinger was aging me, trying to compress my entire lifespan into a heartbeat.
I screamed.
The sound shattered every statue in the chamber simultaneously. Fragments of starlight exploded outward like shrapnel as my voice tore through dimensions. The aging effect reversed violently, snapping me back to my proper age with enough force to send the Harbinger stumbling backward.
Reality fractured around my scream. Cracks appeared in the air itself, showing glimpses of other worlds, other timelines, other versions of this moment playing out differently.
Through one crack, I saw myself accepting the Harbingers' offer.
Through another, I watched everything burn as vengeful gods reclaimed their stolen power.
The right Harbinger moved while I was disoriented, its robes flowing like liquid shadow as it struck not at my body but at something deeper. I felt its power sink into the prophecy markings themselves, invasive fingers of stolen divinity probing at the very source of my abilities.
"Let us show you truth," it hissed, and suddenly I was somewhere else entirely.
Darkness. Absolute, consuming darkness that pressed against my consciousness like a physical weight. But in that darkness, things moved. Massive, ancient, filled with rage that had been building for millennia.
The gods.
Not metaphors or representations, but the actual divine beings the Harbingers had been stealing from. They hung in chains of crystallized time, suspended in a void between realities. Their power bled from countless wounds, siphoned away drop by precious drop to fuel the Harbingers' system.
But they were aware. Oh, they were so terribly aware.
One opened eyes the size of galaxies and looked directly at me. When it spoke, its voice was the sound of dying stars.
"Free us, little vessel, and we will remake the cosmos in our image. Every slight will be answered. Every insult repaid. The mortals will remember their place."
Images flooded my mind. Worlds burned clean of human life. Cities transformed into temples where the only law was divine whim. Children sacrificed on altars built from the bones of scientists and philosophers. Art destroyed because it dared to imagine gods as anything other than perfect.
This was what waited if I chose to release their stolen power. Not justice or restoration, but revenge on a cosmic scale.
The vision shattered as Horrace's roar brought me back to the present.
He had wrapped himself around me like a living shield, his massive form crackling with interdimensional energy as he held the Harbingers at bay.
Where his power touched theirs, reality simply gave up and became something else entirely.
"The Guardian Beast still lives?" The center Harbinger sounded genuinely surprised. "We thought them all extinct."
Guardian Beast. The words hit me like a revelation.
Horrace hadn't been just any interdimensional creature.
He'd been created, designed, bred specifically to protect Chalice-Bearers like me.
That's why my power couldn't affect him if he didn't want it to.
That's why he'd grown so massive when I'd needed him most.
A Harbinger slipped through Horrace's defenses, moving faster than thought. Its hand closed around my throat, lifting me from the ground with inhuman strength. Where its fingers touched my skin, I felt my very essence being drained away.
"Enough games," it snarled. "You will serve willingly or we will hollow you out and use your corpse as a vessel."
Through the connection, I felt the Harbinger's true nature.
Not ancient cosmic entities as they pretended, but parasites.
Scavengers who had found a way to steal divine power and had spent millennia convincing themselves they deserved it.
They were no different from any other tyrant, just operating on a larger scale.
That realization sparked something primal in my core.
Rage.
Pure, incandescent fury at beings who had tortured gods for power, who had turned prophecy into a weapon of control, who dared to threaten the people I loved.
The Oracle's mark exploded with white light.
Power poured out of me in waves, not the controlled manipulation I'd been learning but something raw and devastating. The Harbinger holding me shrieked as my energy burned through its stolen defenses. Its form began to unravel, revealing something small and twisted beneath the cosmic robes.
Just a creature. A scared, desperate creature that had convinced itself it was divine.
I grabbed its wrist with both hands and pulled. Not at its body, but at the stolen power flowing through it. Divine energy flooded into me, hot and alien and absolutely overwhelming. The Harbinger's scream became ultrasonic as centuries of accumulated divinity tore free from its grasp.
Through the transfer, I saw everything. Every god they'd chained. Every world they'd controlled. Every life sacrificed to maintain their system. The scope of their crimes was staggering, but so was the knowledge that came with the stolen power.
I understood now. Really understood.
The choice wasn't between order and chaos. It wasn't between control and freedom. It was between truth and lies, between authentic power and stolen authority.
The Harbingers had built their empire on a foundation of fear, convincing everyone that the alternative to their control was annihilation. But they were wrong. There was another way.
I could feel it now, the network of stolen divine energy that connected every prophecy, every forced fate, every manipulated timeline. It was vast beyond comprehension, but it all flowed through a single point.
Here. Now. Me.
I was the nexus, the focal point where all their stolen power converged. And that meant I could do something they'd never anticipated.
I could give it back.
Not to the chained gods who dreamed of revenge. Not to myself as the new Oracle. But to existence itself, to the fundamental forces that had been operating long before gods or Harbingers decided they knew better.
The remaining Harbingers realized what I was planning. They attacked in perfect synchronization, their combined might focusing on stopping me before I could complete whatever I was attempting. Power that could unmake galaxies crashed against my defenses.
But I wasn't alone.
Horrace roared, his form expanding even further as his true nature awakened.
He became a living tear in reality, a gap between dimensions through which impossible energies poured.
The Harbingers' attacks struck him and simply disappeared, swallowed by interdimensional spaces that operated under different laws of physics.
Through our bond, I felt his absolute certainty.
He'd been waiting for this moment for centuries, bred and shaped and prepared for the one instant when a Chalice-Bearer would have the courage to break the system rather than perpetuate it.
Even if he hadn't even been aware that was what he was waiting for.
I reached deeper into the stolen power, following the threads of divine energy back to their sources. Past the Harbingers' manipulations, past the corrupt prophetic network, to the fundamental forces they'd been siphoning.
And I opened the floodgates.
Power erupted from me in a torrent that shook the foundations of the Threshold Realm. Not just my power, but all of it. Every scrap of stolen divinity the Harbingers had accumulated over millennia came pouring out in a cascade of pure, unfiltered creation.
The temple began to collapse around us, but not from destruction.
From change. The architecture writhed and reformed as natural laws reasserted themselves.
The weeping statues cracked apart, revealing the imprisoned Oracles within, their consciousness finally free to dissipate into the cosmic forces they'd tried to control.
One of the Harbingers made a final desperate lunge toward me, its form already beginning to dissolve as the stolen power that sustained it fled back to its proper sources. "You don't understand what you've done! Without our guidance, without our control, chaos will consume everything!"
I caught its reaching hand in mine, feeling the last of its stolen authority crumble to dust.
"Good," I smiled, and meant it. "Let chaos come. Let free will return. Let the universe figure itself out without anyone's permission."
The Harbinger's scream of rage became a whisper, then silence, as the last of its stolen power fled back to where it belonged. Its physical form crumbled, revealing nothing but empty robes and the echo of delusions that had sustained themselves for far too long.
Around us, the temple completed its transformation. What had been a monument to stolen power became something else entirely. A garden, wild and untamed, where flowers bloomed in impossible colors and rivers flowed upward toward stars that sang lullabies to sleeping worlds.
The power was free. All of it. Flowing back to its sources, returning to the fundamental forces of existence, going home to places and beings I couldn't even imagine. It wouldn't return to the slighted gods. I had made sure of that, at least.
And I felt empty. Not drained, but clean.
The cosmic weight I'd been carrying was gone, lifted from my shoulders and returned to where it belonged.
The Oracle's mark on my forehead faded to a faint scar, no longer burning with stolen authority but merely marking what I'd chosen to give up rather than claim.
Horrace nuzzled against me gently, his form already beginning to shrink back to something more manageable. His twelve eyes held pride and satisfaction. We'd done it. We'd actually done it.
The system was broken. The Harbingers were gone. Free will had been returned to the universe, messy and chaotic and absolutely perfect.
Just like that.
I couldn't wait to tell the others.
Through the garden's new pathways, I heard familiar voices calling my name, growing closer as they navigated the transformed landscape. My four Keys, searching for me, their love and concern reaching across the distance through bonds that no amount of cosmic power could break.
The universe was free.
And so was I.
