Freedom
The stench of burning plasma and vaporized titanium faded.
The jungle's heavy, steady rain swallowed the ashes of battle and washed the churned mud of the clearing into the river.
The deafening screech of servomotors and the hammering of military weapons had died away.
The wilderness's natural cacophony returned.
Chirping insects, the rustle of the canopy, and the deep, untamed roar of the waterfall dominated the night.
Jules knelt in the shallow water at the edge of the river basin, right where the waterfall's current gave way to calmer channels. The water came up to her thighs. It was ice-cold, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat of the alien atmosphere.
Kore sat in front of her in the riverbed. The King of the Jungle needed no chair, no medical cot. He sat directly in the mud, cold water lapping at his thighs and the heavy leather armor of his loincloth. His broad back faced Jules.
She dipped a piece of torn Kevlar fabric—ripped from a dead mercenary—into the flowing water. She wrung it out roughly and pressed the wet cloth against Kore's left shoulder.
The deep violet tissue was torn open there.
The plasma projectile had vaporized the top layers of skin and left a deep, jagged crater in the muscle.
Black, hot warlord blood seeped slowly from the wound.
Jules didn't hesitate. She scrubbed hard along the edges of the burn, washing the swamp dirt and ash from the exposed flesh.
She wasn't gentle. The alien biochemistry of his species didn't require human caution. He was a tank of flesh and bone.
Kore's broad chest rose and fell in a calm, steady rhythm. He didn't flinch as she scraped the rough fabric over his destroyed nerve endings. His thick, scaled tail lay relaxed beneath the water's surface, the tip brushing lazily against Jules' bare calves in an automatic rhythm.
She washed the blood from his back, running her hand over the thick, ridged scars of earlier battles and the fresh tissue already beginning its rapid regeneration. The heat radiating from his body warmed the ice-cold air just above the water's surface.
Jules threw the bloody rag into the river. The current immediately carried it away. She braced her wet hands on his broad shoulders and slid forward in the water until her knees pressed against his back.
“You took quite a beating, big guy,” she said.
Her voice was no longer hoarse. The brittle panic, the cold mortal fear of the Syndicates—all of it had vanished from her voice.
The tone was direct. Provocative. The old, iron-willed brat instinct broke through, but it no longer served as a shield against a hostile world.
It was pure, unfiltered self-assurance. A flirtation on the battlefield.
She ran her thumb along the edge of the wound. “Well. You should have listened to me. I'm the strategist here.”
Kore's breath caught for a fraction of a second.
Then the engine in his chest started. A deep, thunderous rumble vibrated through his torso.
The sound wave traveled directly into Jules' wet palms and sent fine ripples through the water around her legs.
It wasn't an animal warning. It was the dark, rough manifestation of his amusement.
The warlord turned his heavy skull to look over his right shoulder.
His pitch-black mane clung wet to his strong jaw.
The amber eyes fixed on her in the half-darkness.
The murderous, toxic hunting fire had gone out.
What remained was a heavy hunger. He caught the shift in her pheromones.
No fear. No flight reflex. Only pure, adrenaline-fueled provocation.
Kore ground his jaw. The white fangs flashed. A silent promise that needed no human words.
Jules held his gaze. The monster's glowing pupils no longer sent a shiver of fear down her spine. The psychological power dynamic had shifted and found a new center. She was no longer sitting in a cage. She stood in the middle of his territory, and she held the reins of his dominance in her hand.
She took a step back. The water splashed loudly in the sudden silence between them.
Jules reached for the hem of her torn, mud-encrusted shirt.
The material clung like a cold, wet second skin to her ribs.
She yanked the fabric up without hesitation, pulled the garment over her head, and tossed it carelessly onto the muddy riverbank.
The cool jungle air hit her bare skin. Jules stood completely exposed in the knee-deep water. The scratches on her thighs, the sealed cut on her arm, the deep blue bruises Kore's claws had left on her hips—she hid none of it. She wore the marks of his claim like armor.
She didn't cross her arms over her chest. She didn't look away. Instead, a slow, predatory smile settled on her lips. It was the smile of a queen who knew exactly what chain reaction she was triggering in the beast before her.
Kore's nostrils flared wide. The purr in his throat cut off. The thick muscles in his thighs tensed instantly.
Jules didn't wait for his attack. But she didn't run. The muscles in her legs trembled with exhaustion, her limbs heavy as liquid lead. The cold of the river crept up her calves, an icy contrast to the boiling blood in her veins. Instead, she sank to her knees in the flowing water.
Small, rounded pebbles pressed into her bare skin.
The water now reached her chest. The current tugged at her shoulders.
She raised her arms, stretched out her dirty, trembling hands, and laid her palms flat on Kore's steel-hard thighs.
The heat of his skin burned through the ice-cold water directly into her fingertips.
She spread her fingers, dug her nails lightly into his thick muscles, and pulled herself up against him. The movement was a silent invitation.
Kore didn't hesitate. The warlord ripped her from the river.
His hard hands closed like iron clamps around her waist. He lifted her from the water as if she weighed nothing. Water poured in thick, rushing cascades from their bodies. He carried her two stomping steps through the shallows and slammed her with brutal force against the muddy, rising riverbank.
Jules crashed onto her back. The wet, soft mud gave way beneath her weight. Cold, putrid water and thick swamp dirt splashed up. The mud pressed ice-cold against her bare shoulder blades. She gasped for air, but the predator gave her no time to get her bearings.
Kore threw himself over her. His knees rammed deep into the bank mud on either side of her hips. He pressed his weight down on her, pinning her into the ground with his hard chest. The grainy dirt rubbed against her skin—a perverse contrast to the furnace that now completely covered her.
He pinned her wrists, pressed her arms above her head, and drove her hands deep into the soft swamp floor.
His scaled tail lashed once through the shallow water, coiled like a heavy anchor cable around her right thigh, and yanked her leg upward.
He hooked her knee over his broad shoulder and spread her completely.
She lay mud-smeared and defenseless beneath him.
Kore bared his fangs. Ice-cold river water dripped from his pitch-black mane onto her face.
He leaned in, ground his jaw against hers, and bit hard into her lower lip.
The metallic taste of fresh blood mingled with rain and the alpha's rough saliva.
Jules tasted the ash of battle on his tongue.
He wasted no time. The hunt, the war, the blood—all of it had been foreplay.
Jules' core throbbed, slick and flooded with adrenaline.
Kore jerked his head up. He reached down.
He gripped his hard shaft, thick with swollen veins.
Heat radiated from it into the cool night air.
Without warning, he lined the broad tip up with her wet entrance.
He didn't thrust immediately. He pressed the tip slowly against the wet resistance of her body.
The stretching began. Jules' eyes flew wide.
His alien girth was murderous. He pushed in millimeter by millimeter.
Her soft inner walls stretched to the absolute breaking point.
He forced every last breath of air from her lower belly.
A hissing gasp escaped her lips. She arched her back, the mud squelching loudly beneath her spine.
Kore drove his hips forward until his hard pelvis crashed against hers with a dull, fleshy impact. He bottomed out, buried deep inside her. The crushing fullness pinned her to the ground.
“Kore,” she forced out, her voice hoarse, wild, and demanding.
The warlord pulled his hips back.
The thick shaft slid from her tight grip.
His alien texture responded instantly to the friction.
The feline, cartilaginous barbs flared against the grain.
The rough, hard tips scraped mercilessly over her overstimulated flesh.
They dragged the wet tissue with them, raked across her deepest nerve bundle, and fired an electric shockwave through her entire body.
“God!” she screamed, slamming the back of her head into the mud.
Kore hammered back into her. Smooth, crushing pressure. A solid impact. Out. Scratching, tearing overstimulation as the barbs dragged. In. Out.
He set a relentless rhythm. River water whipped up with each thrust, spraying in white fountains over their sweaty bodies.
The wet slap of flesh on flesh drowned out the rush of the current.
He drove her deep into the swamp, used the yielding ground as an anvil for his claim.
Each thrust pounded the war, the panic, and the ash of the syndicates from her bones.
Jules lost all connection to reality. The raw, filthy freedom of this moment devoured her mind. Here there were no auction blocks. No drones. No flesh traders. Only the cold mud, the alien starlit sky above them, and the monster tearing her apart from the inside.
She yanked at her pinned wrists. Her fingernails broke off as she clawed blindly at the wet mire.
She wrapped her free left leg tight around his narrow hip, anchored her heel in the hard muscles of his back, and ground her pelvis against each of his rough thrusts.
She sought the destruction. She craved the friction.
The barbs drove her insane. The friction ignited a blazing fire in her core. She clenched her inner walls, milked his hard shaft, and squeezed the raised hooks with every flex of her muscles. She felt his veins pulsing beneath the cartilage.
Kore roared. The guttural, deafening sound cut through the night.
His golden eyes glowed with toxic frenzy.
The thick cords of muscle in his neck hardened to black stone.
He ducked his head, sank his teeth into the soft skin at her collarbone, and tasted her blood.
He wrenched her wrists deeper into the mud, crushed his full weight onto her, and thrust faster.
The slap of his pelvis became a staccato of pure, animal violence.
The orgasm shattered Jules without warning. Spasms tore through her pelvis, uncontrolled and violent. She screamed his name into the darkness. Her inner muscles clamped like vises around his flesh. The overstimulation collapsed her mind, hurled her into a white, blinding nothingness.
Her contractions ripped him over the edge. In that same heartbeat, Kore's anatomy locked inside her.
The base of his shaft swelled rapidly. The thick knot expanded.
Hot, hard tissue stretched the soft flesh of her entrance ruthlessly to its limit.
The lock snapped shut, chaining her inescapably to his body.
There was no escape. The pressure inside her was crushing—a painful but infinitely satisfying fullness that forced the last breath from her lungs.
He froze. The warlord threw his head back. A second, deeper roar vibrated through his chest. He pumped.
Hot, heavy surges shot against her cervix.
The thick fluid flooded her innermost depths, burned hotter than the river water, and immediately fanned the fading orgasm back to life.
The raw force of each surge made Jules rear up.
She arched beneath him, clawed blindly at his hard shoulders, but the knot and the lion's tail around her legs held her fast.
He filled her. Surge after surge. He overwrote every hostile trail, erased the syndicates' markings, and claimed her innermost depths with his seed. The release lasted agonizing, burning minutes. He pumped until his lungs rattled.
He held her pinned in the mud until the last twitching surges ebbed away.
The raging tension of battle, flight, and mating fell away from him.
Kore's sweat-soaked chest lowered heavily onto Jules.
He braced his weight on his forearms on either side of her head, pressed her deep into the shallow water, but kept the lock inside her completely intact.
His tail wrapped tight around her legs and held her against his flanks.
The cold of the river washed around their bodies. Rain washed the blood from their shoulders. But beneath him, blazing heat reigned. He buried his face deep in the filthy curve of her neck. His rough tongue scraped the mud from her throat, a slow, calm rhythm.
The thundering purr returned to his lungs. It vibrated through his chest and into Jules' ribs, an acoustic anchor in the silence of the wilderness. The throb of the knot inside her beat in time with his heart.
Jules lay exhausted beneath him. Her arms fell limp into the shallow water. She raised her dirty hands, slid them over his wet shoulders, and clawed her fingers into his black mane. She blinked the rain and dirt from her eyes and stared up at the starlit night sky.
She breathed in the musk of her warlord. The cold of the mud. The stench of ozone finally fading away. Jules closed her eyes and let the vibrating purr carry her into the silence. The jungle belonged to them.
