34. Chapter 33
Chapter 33
The day seemed like it would never end. All I wanted to do was sleep, and yet I was basically chained to this chair. Waiting for Carter’s lawyer. I still didn't understand why Spencer insisted on using his instead of his own.
I yawned and rested my mug on my legs. Spence took the mug away and left the room.
Once he was out of earshot, Carter leaned over. "Is there anything else you're hiding from Suzuki?"
I shook my head.
I was so afraid to tell him that I got slapped since I knew his temper. But the fact that he remained calm and had done all the right things let me believe that maybe he’d learned from his experience earlier this year and could control his temper.
"Are you sure?"
Spence walked in and said, "Stop interrogating her. She told us the truth."
I laughed. Yet again, my boyfriend knew me better than my own brother. Although Carter's heart was in the right place.
I reached for Spencer's hand. His strength felt right, but for the first time since I settled in the den, I hated the seating situation. I would love a proper cuddle, but the wingback chairs made it so difficult.
He must have sensed my desire to be held since suddenly, he pulled me up and into his arms, causing me to squeal and Carter to groan.
Carter had been so accepting of Spence and me after that first night, but he still had issues with displays of affection. Apparently, I wasn't allowed to be kissed by his best friend.
Thankfully, Spence didn't do anything more than cuddle, and I could just bury my head into his torso.
After a little bit, Mr. Lyons, Carter’s lawyer, showed up. Carter greeted him and led him back to the den. As soon as the guy arrived, he sat in the same seat that Spencer was in earlier.
"I'm going to use voice notes to create some notes for the evening unless you have some issues with that." The guy tapped a few buttons on his phone and lifted it up. We all nodded that it would be okay. "I understand that there's an issue that requires my immediate action. Care to catch me up?"
"I got slapped by a man, and I'm pretty sure that he stalked me as well."
It was the first time I uttered the fact that I thought Luke followed me to the rink, but how else would he know that I was at the ice rink? But what I couldn't understand was why he followed me instead of Annette. I guess, in a way, it was a small miracle that he chose to follow me since god knew what the repercussions would have been if he knew Annette was hiding money from him.
"By whom? And please tell me there was a police report."
"Luke Donaldson, and yes. No one was arrested, but the police came. He accused me of kidnapping his son."
The lawyer nodded and didn't seem too surprised by my words. "I have to ask, did you kidnap his son?"
"No!" Spencer huffed out. "We're friends with the kid's mother. While they were at the shelter, Eric joined the hockey team that I sponsor. When they returned to his home, we helped take Eric to practice and games. I would have done it like usual, but I had a game."
I noticed how Spencer refused to call Luke by his first name. But whatever worked.
"When you say shelter, what kind?"
"Domestic violence shelter that I help to support," Spencer said as his hand wrapped around my body and pulled me close to him. It was the quiet strength that I needed.
"So he's already a loose cannon. That will make it easier to get a protection order."
After giving him the pertinent contact information, the lawyer put his phone away and stood up. "Well, that should be everything. If you spot this guy again, please make sure that you contact both me and the police."
Carter ushered his lawyer out of the house. Then it was just me and Spence. He lifted me up and said, "Come on, you've been on the verge of crashing for a while now. Let's take you up to bed."
I nodded, but I felt like a terrible girlfriend who didn't want to do anything but sleep.
He laid me down onto the bed, then stripped off his clothes. All that remained was his black boxers, which he always wore on game day.
He must have sensed that I wasn't in the mood to do anything since all he did was scoop me back into his arms and cradle me.
It didn't take long for me to fall asleep tucked against his arms since it felt so good and easy.
