38. Savannah

SAVANNAH

Outside, the compound burns around me like a funeral pyre, smoke turning dawn light the color of dried blood. I find him exactly where I knew he would be—standing in the center of the main hall, untouched by chaos, wearing that same immaculate black suit he favored eight years ago.

El Espectro turns when my boots crunch over broken glass. His smile spreads slow and genuine, like greeting an old lover.

"Savannah." My name rolls off his tongue with disturbing affection. "You look magnificent covered in ash and violence."

I keep my rifle trained on his chest, finger steady on the trigger. "You look exactly the same. Still playing dress-up while your world burns down."

"Our world." He steps closer, completely ignoring the weapon aimed at his heart. "This has always been our world, mija. Violence shaped us both into something beautiful and terrible."

The endearment hits like a physical blow. I force my voice to remain level. "You killed my family, you fucking monster."

"I created you." His dark eyes gleam with pride that makes my skin crawl. "That frightened girl hiding under her brother's corpse would never have survived what you became. I gave you purpose."

"You gave me nightmares."

"I gave you power." He gestures to the destruction surrounding us. "Look what you accomplished. Look how perfectly you learned to kill. Every lesson I taught you, every scar you earned—it all led here."

My hands don't shake, but something inside me does. "You're insane."

"I'm honest." He stops just outside my weapon's reach, close enough that I can see the flecks of gold in his eyes. "Eight years ago, when my men slaughtered your family, I watched you play dead beneath the blood. Do you know what I saw?"

I don't answer, but he continues anyway.

"Potential. Raw, magnificent potential. So I made a choice." His voice drops to that familiar whisper that once commanded absolute obedience. "I told my lieutenant to leave one survivor. I told him to make sure the girl lived."

The rifle wavers for the first time. "Liar."

"I spared you, Savannah. Intentionally. Because I recognized something in your eyes that matched what lived in mine.

" He tilts his head, studying my face like a work of art.

"Hunger. Not just for revenge—for transformation.

I knew if I gave you the right training, the right purpose, you would become extraordinary. "

"I became your weapon."

"You became my masterpiece." Pride radiates from every word. "My greatest creation. My intended successor."

The admission hits harder than any bullet. All those years believing I infiltrated his organization through skill and determination, and he knew. He always knew.

"That's why you can't stay with these bikers," he continues, voice turning gentle and coaxing. "They see you as something to protect, something to tame. But I see you as you truly are—a queen built from blood and steel. You belong beside me, not beneath them."

His words wrap around me like chains I thought I'd broken years ago. The rifle trembles now, my grip loosening as doubt floods in. What if he's right? What if everything I became, everything I survived, was just his design playing out perfectly?

"You see it now," El Espectro murmurs, stepping closer. "The truth you've been running from. You didn't escape me, mija. You became exactly what I intended."

My breath catches. Eight years of believing I'd outsmarted him, that my infiltration was my own cunning, my own strength. But if he orchestrated it all...

"I watched you kill my lieutenant in the mountains," he continues, voice warm with paternal pride. "Flawless technique. Perfect positioning. Everything I taught you, refined to art."

The weapon wavers further. Maybe I am just his creation. Maybe the darkness in me will always?—

"Bullshit."

Dante's voice pierces the psychological web like a blade. He emerges from the smoke to my left, rifle trained on El Espectro, moving with that predatory grace that makes him lethal.

"Pretty story," Dante says, never taking his eyes off the cartel leader. "But you're forgetting something crucial."

Gideon appears to my right, knuckles bloodied, grey eyes burning with protective fury. "She chose to leave you."

"And she chose to stay with us," Malachi adds, materializing from the shadows behind El Espectro like death in an expensive suit. His blade presses against the man's throat before anyone can blink.

El Espectro doesn't flinch, but his smile falters. "Ah. The guard dogs arrive."

"Wrong," I say, my voice steadying as their presence grounds me. The rifle stops shaking. "They're my family."

"Family?" El Espectro laughs, the sound sharp and mocking. "These dogs who profit from violence? Who built their kingdom on blood just as I did? You think they're different from me?"

"They are different," I reply, finger finding the trigger again. "They gave me choice. You gave me commands."

"I gave you purpose?—"

"You gave me trauma." The words come out steady, final. "But they gave me something you never could."

"Which is?"

I look at Dante, whose quiet strength taught me trust. At Gideon, whose fierce devotion showed me I was worth protecting. At Malachi, whose gentle honesty proved I deserved love.

"A reason to live instead of just survive."

El Espectro's face hardens. "You're making a mistake, Savannah. These men will disappoint you. They'll leave or betray or die, and you'll remember that only power endures."

"Maybe," I admit. "But I'd rather risk heartbreak than guarantee emptiness."

The admission hangs in the smoky air. For eight years, I defined myself by what I could destroy. But these three men taught me I could also protect, build, belong.

"I choose them," I say, voice ringing clear through the ruins. "I choose love over vengeance. I choose family over fear."

El Espectro's eyes flash with something that might be genuine hurt. "Then you choose weakness."

"No," Dante says quietly. "She chooses strength."

El Espectro's face transforms, elegant mask cracking to reveal something feral underneath. "If you won't come willingly, mija, then you'll come broken."

His hand moves toward the concealed weapon at his waist, but he's forgotten something crucial—he trained me, but these men forged me into something sharper.

"Now," I whisper.

Malachi's blade slides deeper, drawing a thin line of crimson across El Espectro's throat. "You always did talk too much."

El Espectro spins violently, breaking free and drawing his pistol in one fluid motion. The bullet meant for Malachi's head whistles past his ear as he drops low.

Dante's rifle barks once. The shot takes El Espectro in the shoulder, spinning him sideways but not dropping him. He's always been harder to kill than he should be.

"Eight years I invested in you!" El Espectro snarls, blood seeping through his pristine suit as he aims at me. "Eight years of perfection!"

Gideon moves like controlled lightning, tackling El Espectro before he can fire. They crash through the remains of a wooden table, fists and elbows connecting with wet sounds. But El Espectro fights with the desperate fury of someone who's lost his most prized possession.

A knife appears in his hand—where the hell was he hiding that?—and he drives it toward Gideon's ribs. I put a bullet through his wrist before the blade connects.

"You taught me to shoot," I call out, advancing with my rifle steady. "But you never taught me when to stop."

El Espectro cradles his shattered hand against his chest, eyes wild with pain and rage. "You think these men love you? They love what I made you into. The killer. The weapon. Without that darkness, you're nothing."

"Wrong again." Dante appears beside me, muzzle trained on El Espectro's chest. "We love her in spite of what you did to her."

"Because of what she chose to become after," Gideon adds, blood trickling from a cut above his eye.

Malachi circles behind our target, blade gleaming. "And because she chose us over you."

El Espectro laughs, the sound bitter and broken. "Sentimental fools. Love is weakness. Power is?—"

My shot takes him center mass. He staggers backward, shock replacing rage on his face.

"Power," I say quietly, "is choosing who deserves to live."

Dante's bullet follows mine. Then Gideon's. Then Malachi drives his blade between ribs, finding the heart with surgical precision.

El Espectro drops to his knees, designer suit ruined with blood and ash. His eyes find mine one last time, still carrying that twisted affection that makes my skin crawl.

"You'll... always be... my masterpiece," he whispers.

"No," I reply, watching the light fade from his eyes. "I'm theirs."
