Chapter 5

Chapter Five

Serenity

Someone is beating on my door.

Oh my god, what time is it? “Go away!” I yell.

The knocking doesn’t stop.

“Ugh.” I sit up. “Fine. I’m coming.”

Before I even get out from under the covers, the door swings open.

Cole and Carson are playfully punching each other as they enter. They stop at the end of the bed and stare at me.

“Rage was right. She didn’t ru…nnn,” Cole’s words drift off as they both tip their head to the side like a pair of owls.

“What the fuck did you do to your hair?” Carson asks.

My hand goes to my head, and I jump to my knees in the center of the bed. I turn around, finding my hair scattered across the pillow. “Oh my god!”

“Oh shit,” Carson says, following me as I sprint to the bathroom.

“What the fuck happened to my hair?” I cry, gawking at a reflection I don’t recognize.

“You didn’t do this?” he asks.

“No, I didn’t do this!” I pull at the chopped strands. “Why would I do this to myself?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. Bitches be crazy sometimes.”

I spin on him and his brother. “You guys did this.”

“We didn’t cut your hair,” Cole says, holding up his hands.

“But you had a key …” My words taper off as the three of us come to the same conclusion at exactly the same time. “She wants Rage that bad?” I ask, turning back to the mess on my head that Tiffany’s jealousy left behind.

Cole places his hand on my shoulder. “Hey, it’s just hair. You’re still hot as fuck.”

I laugh sadly, pulling out a loose clump. This isn’t the first time someone’s butchered my hair. At least this time it was done by someone who wasn’t supposed to love me.

“I’ll call Wolfe’s ol' lady,” Carson says, leaving the room.

“I’m serious. You’re still way prettier than Tiff,” his brother encourages.

“It doesn’t matter.” I push past him and jump back into bed, covering my head.

“Come on,” he says, grabbing me around the ankle before I get myself completely tucked in. “Rage wants you to go down and work out a little more of your frustration.”

“No,” I say, kicking my feet.

“Shelly will get you all fixed up and then we’ll go. She cuts all our hair,” he says, dipping his head so he can admire himself in the reflection of the television.

I push the blanket down and look at him. He does look pretty good, but like I said, it doesn’t matter. Every day just drags me deeper and deeper into the madness my family created.

“I’m just going to wait here until the Scorpions show up. At least now I’m so ugly they won’t make me suck their dicks before killing me.”

Cole walks around the bed, dropping to his knees on the floor so he’s in my face. “They won’t care what you look like. They’d just put a bag over your head, and that’s no lie. Shit, they probably suck each other’s dicks. But don’t worry. We won’t let them hurt you.”

“You guys don’t even know me.”

“You were honest with us, so that tells me a little about who you are.”

“Honesty didn’t get me anywhere with them.”

“Well, around here it counts.”

“You want honesty? I don’t care about my stupid hair,” I say, hoping he didn’t hear the catch in my voice.

He places his big hand on the side of my face. “Don’t start lying now,” he says softly.

Silent tears run down my cheeks, and he sweetly brushes them away.

“It’s okay to be sad about your hair. I get it.”

“She’s such a bitch.”

“She is,” he agrees, picking up a tuft of my hair and running it between his fingers.
