Chapter 26 Laney

Laney

Idon’t cry.

I don’t scream.

I do something worse.

I go cold.

The fear drains out of me, leaving something sharp and steady behind.

“Get him back,” I say.

Trigger looks at me.

There’s something in his eyes now.

Respect.

“We will.”

“Now,” I say.

Marco is already pulling out his phone, scrolling through something quickly.

“She’ll take him to one of three places,” he says. “Maybe two. I know her patterns.”

“Then start talking,” Wolf says.

I look down at my daughter.

Her tiny hand curls around my finger, gripping it with surprising strength.

She doesn’t know what’s happening.

She doesn’t know the world just shifted.

And in that moment, I make a promise.

“They don’t get him,” I whisper.

My voice is quiet.

Deadly calm.

“Not like this. Not because of us.”

I lift my head and look at the men around the table.

They’re soldiers.

Warriors.

Men who know how to hunt monsters.

“And if they do…”

My voice hardens.

“I will kill her myself.”

No one laughs.

No one argues.

Because they believe me.
