They all file in like a tactical unit responding to a cake emergency.

Wolf. Havoc. Two of the Rangers. And one very nosy Magnolia lady who absolutely was not invited but showed up anyway because she has a sixth sense for news.

Saint clears his throat.

Everyone goes quiet.

I feel his hand find mine.

He squeezes.

“Uh,” he says.

This is the man who has walked into gunfire without blinking.

Public speaking is clearly his true enemy.

“We wanted to tell you something,” he says.

Wolf crosses his arms. “You’re resigning?”

“No.”

“Moving?”

“No.”

“Did you adopt another dog without telling us?”

“No.”

I can’t help it.

I hold up my hand.

The ring catches the light.

For half a second, nobody speaks.
