Me
Yep. Just doing some work for one of my classes.
Riggs
Calling
I smile when I read the text. My phone vibrates in my hand, and I quickly swipe to answer his call. “Hey.”
“You weren’t kidding when you said that book had a twist.” His deep voice sends butterflies straight to my chest.
I laugh. “All of her books are like that.”
“So I’m learning. I’ve only read two, but both blew my mind.”
I chew on my lower lip, unsure what to say. As much as I love discussing books, it’s strange doing it with a man I almost had sex with; one I fantasize about daily. We both know we’re flirting with danger because as much as Riggs wants to pretend there isn’t an attraction between us, we can’t deny the fact that there is one.
“What are you working on?” he asks.
“I’m writing a paper for my Deviant Behaviors class. It’s about black collar jobs.”
“Sounds interesting.”
“It is. I decided to write about the stigma of handling the dead.” I chose the course for an elective, but I’m finding it’s the only class this semester that holds my interest.
He chuckles. “You have a dark mind. Should I be worried?”
“Not like that,” I laugh. “I’m writing about funeral directors.”
“I thought maybe you got inspired by those thrillers you read.” I can hear the smile in his voice as he teases me.
“Hey, you’ve been reading them too.”
“True.” We sit in silence for a bit before he sighs. “I better let you go.”
“Okay. . .”
“Goodnight, Zoe.”
“Night.” I toss my phone onto the bed. Our daily texts do nothing to help me forget my crush.
Riggs
I saw a movie last night, and it reminded me of our conversation the other day.
Me
Really? How so?
Riggs
It was about a mortician who had to embalm an ex-girlfriend. He hallucinated that she was talking to him. It was a very tragic love story, but also kind of sick.
Me
Love story?
Riggs
Yeah, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say he falls back in love with her and figures out a way to be together. I may be slightly traumatized.

Should I be worried you watch stuff like that?
Riggs

I better go. My sorority is having a mixer tonight.
