Chapter 8 The Debt Comes Due

Gu Cheng looked at my "remains." His face turned pale instantly.

People guessed I had deliberately sought death. It was because my mood had been very off that morning.

The villagers pointed fingers at Gu Cheng. They cursed him for being heartless and entangled with another woman, saying he had forced me to death.

Gu Cheng had not yet recovered. My death had overturned his plans completely. He appeared at a loss for the moment.

Soon Brother Ma arrived with a group of his underlings to demand the debt.

My death news had spread throughout the village. Brother Ma had lent money to Gu Cheng only because I was a local with a house.

Now that I was dead, he naturally felt uneasy.

With his professional sharpness he snatched Gu Cheng's bag. Inside were clothes and valuable watches. It looked like someone planning to leave far away.

He immediately demanded that Gu Cheng repay the money right away or he would break his legs.

I learned all this in a letter from my aunt back in the village.

Of course I had only told her that Gu Cheng and Zhu Xiuqin were involved. I had left in heartbreak. She knew nothing of the grudges from my previous life.

Brother Ma saw that Gu Cheng might try to run. He escorted him home and began to hurl vicious words. He forced him to repay the money.

Gu Cheng had never seen such a scene. He was scared and did not know how to handle it.

In my previous life I had faced such situations for more than ten years. I also had to protect the frightened Gu Fang and Gu Yuan.

Gu Cheng thought there might be money left in my room. But I had sold all the furniture in the house. It was completely empty.

Gu Fang and Gu Yuan huddled together. They trembled in fear.

Gu Cheng seemed to have a sudden idea. My house could still be sold for some money. And since I was dead with no relatives, the house could only belong to him as my fiancé.

The Village Chief arrived with people. He pulled out documents and said my house had already been requisitioned.

Even if Gu Cheng dared to buy it, Brother Ma would not dare accept it.

Gu Cheng was angry and anxious. He kept blaming me. I had died so suddenly. Dying was one thing, but where had I put the money?

Brother Ma had grown impatient. "The money you borrowed only yesterday. It could not have all been spent."

Gu Cheng looked bitter.

As soon as he got the money he had remitted it to Zhu Xiuqin's cousin in the south who did business.

That person had guaranteed the business could earn several times over. Once he and Zhu Xiuqin arrived, they would become big bosses.

In my previous life it had indeed been so.

But now Gu Cheng had missed today's train to the south. Brother Ma stared at him like a tiger. He could not leave anymore.

Gu Cheng seemed to be putting his hope on Zhu Xiuqin. Maybe she would go to the south first and take the money to help him deal with Brother Ma.

Unfortunately his hope fell empty again.

Zhu Xiuqin was escorted back to the village by her ex-husband.

It turned out Zhu Xiuqin and Liu Erhun had never completed the divorce procedures. Her family had also received a high betrothal gift from Liu Erhun that was never returned. That was why Liu Erhun always troubled her.

Gu Cheng's side fell into chaos. The money remitted to Zhu Xiuqin's cousin brought no news.

And my business got better and better.
