Chapter 14 Rising Tensions

I sent Imperial Consort Mother away and started attending court formally.

Father Emperor's intent was clear.

Some ministers opposed, but gradually suppressed.

Busy, I hadn't visited Zhao Yan for long.

That day, he came to me.

Seeing my post-court official attire, his eyes flickered complexly.

"Tangyue, you've changed."

"People change." I didn't invite him in, standing to ask. "What is it?"

My coldness stung him.

His eyes showed desolation; he covered his lips.

"I heard you argued with Imperial Consort Mother. She's sad in the palace, hopes I persuade you."

"No need." I interrupted, asking. "Do you know why we argued?"

Zhao Yan paused, nodded.

I asked. "You think I don't deserve to be emperor?"

"No." Zhao Yan explained flustered. "But you're a frail woman..."

"Imperial Brother."

I lifted my eyes, no smile in them.

"Now the frail one is you."

Zhao Yan's face paled instantly.
