Chapter 23
Chapter Twenty-Three
JAY
There was no better way to start off the new year than with the woman I loved in my arms. Sarah disconnected the call with her lawyer and set the phone on the nightstand, then snuggled in close with her head on my chest.
“What’d he say?”
Not only had Drew broken into Sarah’s apartment, but he had resisted arrest and violated his probation. He’d also been armed and carrying the disposable cell that he’d been using to send those texts.
“Drew will more than likely be going away for a long time and won’t be my problem anymore.”
“Our problem.”
“Huh?”
“You and me.” I brushed my hand up and down her arm. “Our problem.”
She nodded. “Right. Our problem.”
The moment Drew had been shoved into the back of that police car, the dark cloud that had been hanging over us had disappeared.
In those first couple of weeks after the incident, she’d still needed occasional reminders that she and Nora were my future and that I liked taking care of them.
That here with them was where I wanted to be and I had no intention of going anywhere. She was stuck with me.
“I’m giving my apartment up at the end of this month.”
She popped up, eyes wide. “What?”
Even though I expected the dramatic response, it still had me smiling. I prayed she was brave enough to embrace the change, because this was where I belonged.
“Yeah, I’m always here anyway.”
I literally couldn’t remember the last time I’d spent the night at my place.
She smiled. “Didn’t you just take over the lease from Owen in October?”
I shrugged. “I don’t need it anymore.”
She hummed. “Then when my lease expires in March, we should probably look into upgrading to a two-bedroom.”
My heart soared at her easy tone. “That’s my girl.”
She rolled her eyes and chuckled, then snuggled back into my side.
Exactly where she belonged.
