Chapter 33

Chapter Thirty-Three

Isla

My heels click against the marble floor of Alderidge-Hathaway’s executive level, each step echoing like a drumbeat in my chest. The familiar path to the conference room feels different now—longer, heavier with the weight of everything that’s happened.

I pause at the doorway, my hand trembling slightly as I reach for the handle. Through the glass, I can see them all waiting: Xander at the head of the table, Reyna beside him, Bash sprawled in his usual chair, and Drake—my heart clenches—focused intently on his tablet.

Taking a deep breath, I push open the door.

The conversation stops. All eyes turn to me, and for a moment, the silence is deafening. I brace myself for the anger, the accusations, the disappointment?—

“Took you long enough, Carrington.” Bash’s familiar grin breaks across his face, and something inside me starts to unravel.

Reyna crosses her arms, giving me a critical once-over.

“You look like hell.”

But there’s warmth in her eyes, understanding from someone who’s walked a similar path.

“Eli told us everything,” Xander says quietly, leaning back in his chair. His expression is unreadable, but his next words hold no judgment. “Took him long enough too.”

My throat tightens as I turn to Drake. He just shakes his head, eyes suspiciously bright.

“Never doubted you. But you should’ve trusted me, Isla.”

“I know.” The words come out rough, choked with emotion. “I know, and I’m?—“

“If you say you’re sorry one more time,” Drake interrupts, standing up, “I swear I’ll hack your coffee maker to only brew decaf for a month.”

A laugh bubbles up, wet with unshed tears.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Try me.”

Before I can respond, I’m wrapped in a tight hug. Drake’s familiar scent—coffee and that subtle hint of his cologne—surrounds me, and I finally let go. The tears come freely now as I clutch my best friend.

“We protect each other,” he murmurs. “That’s how this works. No more lone wolf bullshit, okay?”

I nod against his shoulder, unable to speak. When I pull back, Reyna’s there with a tissue, and Bash has somehow materialized coffee.

“Welcome home, Isla,” Xander says simply, and those three words undo me all over again.

Because this isn’t just about Eli. It’s about all of them—this crazy, complicated, fiercely loyal family that somehow became mine. Even when I pushed them away, even when I thought I had to face everything alone, they were there. Waiting. Supporting. Believing.

And this time, I’m not going anywhere.

I take my seat at the table, between Drake and Bash, exactly where I belong. “So,” I say, voice stronger now, “let’s talk about how we’re going to handle Wolfe.”

Bash grins wickedly. “Now that’s the Isla we know and love.”

For the first time in weeks, I feel whole again. Complete. Ready to face whatever comes next—not alone, but surrounded by family.

I stand at the entrance of the Artisan Hotel, morning sunlight catching on the restored cast-iron facade. What was once scaffolding and dreams has transformed into something magnificent. Something real.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Eli’s voice comes from behind me, and warmth spreads through my chest at his proximity.

“It’s more than that.” I reach out, touching the smooth stone. “It’s everything we fought for.”

We walk through the grand lobby together, our footsteps echoing on the marble floors. The restored historic details blend perfectly with the modern tech. Living walls spill down either side, filling the space with greenery and life.

“The smart glass installation is complete,” I say, gesturing to the soaring windows. “Watch this.” I tap my tablet, and the glass instantly shifts, adjusting the natural light to perfect levels. “They followed my design specs to the letter—even the custom calibrations I left in my notes.”

Eli’s hand finds the small of my back, a hint of pride in his voice. “Of course they did. No one dared deviate from your instructions. Show me what else you’ve done.”

We take the private elevator to the rooftop garden. As the doors open, I hear his sharp intake of breath. The space has come alive exactly as I envisioned—sustainable plantings woven between hidden solar arrays, with the city skyline stretching out before us.

“Remember when this was just drawings on your desk?”

His voice is soft, full of wonder.

“God, that feels like a lifetime ago.” I lean against the railing, looking down at the bustling street below. “Back when we could barely be in the same room together.”

“And now?”

I turn to face him, taking in how the morning light catches his eyes.

“Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

The maintenance door buzzes, and Drake emerges, tablet in hand.

“Security systems are fully integrated,” he announces. “IRIS is running final checks on all protocols.”

“How’s the penthouse coming along?” Eli asks.

“Come see for yourself.”

We follow Drake to the top floor, where luxury meets innovation in ways I once only dreamed about. Smart technology is woven invisibly throughout the space, controlling everything from climate to privacy glass with intuitive ease.

Eli’s confidence steadies me. “We’ve built something extraordinary here, Isla. Something that honors both our visions.”

I look around the penthouse—at the perfect marriage of sustainability and luxury, at the way history and innovation dance together in every detail. “We did, didn’t we?”

Drake clears his throat. “I’ll go run those final security checks.” He squeezes my shoulder as he passes, leaving Eli and me alone.

“You know,” Eli says, moving closer, “I never told you how proud I am of what you’ve accomplished here.”

“What we’ve accomplished,” I correct him, my voice thick with emotion. “I couldn’t have done this without you.”

His fingers brush my cheek, and I lean into his touch.

“Partners,” he murmurs.

“Partners,” I agree, and in that moment, looking out over our creation, I see everything clearly. What we built together. What we almost lost. And what we’re still fighting to protect.

Because the Artisan Hotel isn’t just a building anymore—it’s our legacy. Our future. And nothing, not even Wolfe, can take that away from us.

Drake’s tech sanctuary is a maze of screens and humming servers, the blue light casting shadows across his exhausted face. He hasn’t moved from his chair in hours, lines of code reflecting in his glasses.

“You need to see this,” he says without looking up.

I move closer, Eli right behind me. “What did you find?”

“You’re not going to like it.” Drake pulls up a series of documents, his fingers flying across the keyboard. “Wolfe’s been busy. Very busy.”

My stomach drops as I scan the screens. “These are safety inspection reports. But they’re?—“

“Fake.” Drake’s jaw clenches. “Expertly fabricated documentation suggesting structural instability. He’s been quietly feeding them to key industry players.”

“Son of a bitch,” Eli mutters, leaning in closer. “He’s trying to create panic before the opening.”

“It gets worse.” Drake switches to another screen. “Look at these.”

Social media feeds scroll past, each post more alarming than the last. Whispers about Project Cornerstone. Questions about the Alderidge legacy. Carefully crafted doubt seeping into every conversation about the hotel.

“He doesn’t need to destroy the hotel,” Drake says, running a hand through his disheveled hair. “He just needs to make people afraid to step inside.”

The silence that follows is heavy with understanding. All our work, all our sacrifices—Wolfe’s trying to tear it down with nothing but words and fear.

“How far has it spread?” I ask, my voice tight.

“Not far yet. But tomorrow?” Drake shakes his head. “Once the major news outlets pick it up?—”

“They won’t.” Eli’s voice cuts through the tension, steel in every word. “Because we’re going to stop it.”

But he’s already lost.

Because this fight isn’t just about a hotel or a company. It’s about proving to myself that I belong here. That I’ve always belonged here.

I glance at Eli, at Drake, at the family I found when I wasn’t even looking.

This is mine. And I won’t let anyone take it from me.

“I’ve got proof of tampering,” Drake offers. “And IRIS has been tracking his digital footprint.”

I turn to face him, recognizing the determination in his eyes—the same look he had when we first started this project.

“Good.” I straighten up, feeling the familiar fire of purpose igniting. “We need everything. Every document, every connection, every piece of evidence that shows what he’s really doing.”

“Already on it.” Drake’s fingers resume their dance across the keyboard. “But Isla—he’s desperate now. Desperate people are dangerous.”

“So are we,” Eli says quietly, his hand finding mine. “When we’re protecting what matters.”

I squeeze his fingers, drawing strength from his touch.

“How long until the story breaks?”

“Twenty four hours, maybe less.”

“Then we work faster.” I pull up a chair next to Drake. “Show me everything you’ve found. Every detail matters now.”

As we dive into the evidence, I feel it—the same determination that got us through every other challenge. But this time it’s different. This time we’re not just fighting for a building, or a legacy, or even our relationship.

We’re fighting for the truth. For everything we’ve built together. And Wolfe’s about to learn what happens when he underestimates the power of trust over fear.

“Let’s end this,” I say, and both men nod, united in purpose.

Because this is the final test—the moment where we stand together or let Wolfe tear us apart. And this time, surrounded by the people I trust most in the world, I know exactly where I stand.

Midnight bathes the Artisan Hotel in silvery moonlight as we begin our final walkthrough. The lobby’s marble floors gleam like still water, our footsteps echoing in the hushed space. Everything we’ve fought for stands ready—waiting for tomorrow.

“Security systems?” I ask, though I already know Drake’s answer.

“Locked down tighter than Fort Knox.” He taps his tablet. “IRIS is monitoring every access point, every system, every digital fingerprint.”

Eli’s voice comes from behind me, warm and steady.

“And the Ethics Committee’s inspection report?”

“Posted publicly an hour ago.” I pull up the document on my phone. “Full approval, with special commendation for our safety protocols.”

We move through the hotel like guardians of something precious. Each floor tells our story—the battles we’ve won, the trust we’ve built, the future we’ve chosen. The living walls pulse with life, their gentle humidity mixing with the scent of fresh paint and possibility.

“Remember our first site visit?” Eli asks as we reach the rooftop garden. “When you wouldn’t even look at me?”

A soft laugh escapes me. “God, we were idiots.”

“Were?” Drake raises an eyebrow, earning him a playful shove.

The city stretches out before us, a tapestry of lights and shadows. Tomorrow, this space will be filled with people—investors, journalists, critics. But tonight, it’s just us, standing on the edge of everything we’ve built.

“Wolfe’s press conference is scheduled for eight AM,” Drake says, checking his phone. “Right when we open the doors.”

“Let him try.” Eli’s voice holds no fear, only certainty. “We have the truth on our side.”

I turn to face them both—my best friend and the man I love. In their eyes, I see the same unwavering conviction that burns in my chest.

“I need to tell you both something,” I say, my voice catching slightly. “Thank you. For believing in me, even when I couldn’t believe in myself. For fighting beside me, even when I tried to fight alone.”

“Isla—” Drake starts, but I hold up my hand.

“Let me finish. Because tomorrow, whatever happens, I want you to know that this—” I gesture to the hotel, to the three of us standing here, “—this is what matters. Not Wolfe, not the past, not the fear. This. Us. The family we’ve built.”

Eli steps forward, his hand finding mine in the darkness. “We’ve got this,” he says simply.

Drake nods, shoving his hands in his pockets with a crooked smile. “Damn right we do.”

The city hums below us, unaware of the battle that’s coming. But up here, in this moment, I feel invincible. Because I’m not just Isla Carrington, the architect with something to prove. I’m part of something bigger—something stronger than Wolfe’s hatred or Edward’s manipulation or my own fears.

“You ready for this?” Eli asks softly.

I look at him—really look at him. And for the first time, I don’t just see the man I love.

I see my partner.

The person I want beside me for every battle, every victory, every loss.

I spent so long trying to prove myself, to be enough, to build something that mattered. But standing here, with him, I finally understand—I already am enough. I always was.

“Yeah,” I say, my voice steady and sure. “I am.”

Because this isn’t about proving myself anymore. It’s about standing with the people I love, fighting for what we believe in, and showing the world what happens when you choose trust over fear, love over legacy, and family over everything else.

Tomorrow will bring what it brings. But tonight, under the stars, surrounded by the proof of our shared vision, I am exactly where I need to be. And I’m not running anymore.
