The early morning wind carried the cold scent of pine through the forest as Aria hurried along the narrow path that led toward the pack house.
Her hands were full.
A basket of freshly washed clothes rested against her hip while another bundle hung over her arm. The weight made her shoulders ache, but she didn't dare slow down.
If she was late again, Lila would make sure the whole pack heard about it.
Aria kept her eyes on the ground as she walked past a group of young wolves training in the clearing. Their laughter rang loudly through the air.
One of them noticed her.
"Look," he said loudly enough for others to hear. "The servant girl is back."
A few of them chuckled.
Aria pretended not to hear. She had learned long ago that responding only made things worse.
She pushed open the wooden door of the pack house and stepped inside. The scent of cooked meat and warm bread filled the air, making her stomach tighten with hunger.
She had been awake since before sunrise, but she hadn't eaten yet.
"Finally."
The sharp voice came from the center of the room.
Aria lifted her eyes carefully.
Lila stood near the long dining table, arms crossed over her chest. Her expensive red dress hugged her slim figure perfectly, and her golden hair fell over her shoulders like something out of a painting.
Beside her stood two other girls who immediately started whispering and giggling when they saw Aria.
"You're late," Lila said coldly.
"I'm sorry," Aria replied quietly. "The river current was stronger today."
Lila rolled her eyes.
"Excuses. You're always full of them."
Aria lowered the basket of clothes onto the table and began folding them neatly. Her fingers moved quickly out of habit.
For the past six years, this had been her life.
Cleaning.
Washing.
Cooking.
Running errands for wolves who treated her like she didn't belong.
Sometimes she wondered if anyone in the pack even remembered who her parents were.
Once, they had been respected warriors of the Silver Moon Pack.
But after they died during a rogue attack, everything changed.
Aria became invisible.
Or worse.
A burden.
"Make sure my dress is ready before tonight," Lila said suddenly.
Aria paused.
"Tonight?"
Lila looked at her like she had said something stupid.
"Have you forgotten already?" she scoffed. "The Moon Ceremony is tomorrow night."
The words made something stir deep inside Aria's chest.
The Moon Ceremony.
Every young wolf who had reached eighteen would attend.
It was the night the Moon Goddess revealed destined mates.
The pack had been preparing for weeks.
Music.
Food.
Decorations.
Excitement filled every corner of the territory.
Everyone was looking forward to it.
Everyone except Aria.
She forced herself to continue folding the clothes.
"Of course you'll still be working that night," Lila added with a smirk. "Someone like you wouldn't have a mate anyway."
The girls beside her laughed.
Aria stayed silent.
But deep inside her chest... something small and fragile stirred.
A quiet voice she had tried to ignore for years.
What if...
What if the Moon Goddess had chosen someone for her too?
The thought felt dangerous.
Hope always was.
Before she could stop herself, Aria asked softly,
"Do you think... everyone has a mate?"
Lila blinked in surprise.
Then she burst out laughing.
"Everyone?" she repeated mockingly. "Please."
She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper.
"The Moon Goddess wouldn't waste a mate bond on a weak, wolfless girl like you."
Aria felt the familiar sting in her chest.
Wolfless.
The cruelest word a werewolf could hear.
At eighteen years old, Aria still hadn't shifted.
Most wolves shifted for the first time around sixteen.
But her wolf had never appeared.
Some believed she simply didn't have one.
A defective wolf.
An embarrassment to the pack.
Aria finished folding the last cloth and quietly picked up the empty basket.
"I'll prepare your dress," she said softly.
Lila waved her off dismissively.
Aria turned and walked toward the door.
But the moment she stepped outside, something strange happened.
A sudden shiver ran down her spine.
She froze.
The forest had gone unusually quiet.
Even the birds had stopped singing.
Aria slowly looked toward the dark line of trees surrounding the pack territory.
For a moment...
She could have sworn someone was watching her.
A powerful presence.
Ancient.
Dominant.
Her heart began to race for reasons she couldn't explain.
Then-
A deep voice echoed faintly from somewhere within the forest.
Low.
Dangerous.
And impossibly close.
"Interesting..."
Aria's breath caught.
Because somehow...
She had the terrifying feeling that the voice was talking about her.
