THE KING'S SHADOW
Silence swallowed the entire clearing.
The powerful howl still echoed faintly through the forest, leaving a heavy tension hanging in the air.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Every wolf in the Silver Moon Pack knew exactly what that howl meant.
The Alpha King.
Even the Alpha standing on the stone platform looked stunned for a brief moment before quickly regaining his composure.
The Alpha King rarely left his territory.
And he certainly never visited smaller packs without warning.
Whispers began spreading through the crowd like wildfire.
“Why would the Alpha King be here?”
“Did something happen?”
“Is he coming to the pack?”
Aria stood frozen near the lantern post.
The strange warmth in her chest had not disappeared. If anything, it had grown stronger after the howl echoed through the forest.
Her fingers pressed lightly against her chest as she tried to steady her breathing.
Across the clearing, Kael remained still in the ceremonial circle.
His sharp eyes were now focused on the dark forest beyond the pack territory.
His expression had turned serious.
Alert.
Like a predator sensing another powerful presence nearby.
The Alpha raised his hand again, trying to calm the growing whispers.
“Remain calm,” he instructed firmly. “Continue the ceremony.”
The crowd slowly quieted.
Though many wolves still glanced nervously toward the forest.
The ceremony resumed.
Another pair of wolves suddenly gasped as they recognized each other as mates. Cheers erupted again, though the excitement now carried a trace of unease.
Everyone could still feel it.
That distant presence.
Powerful.
Watching.
Aria tried to focus on her work again.
She moved quietly between the tables, refilling cups and adjusting the trays of food.
But her attention kept drifting toward the forest.
And every time she looked…
That uneasy feeling returned.
As if something was drawing closer.
Minutes passed.
More mates found each other in the ceremonial circle.
The Moon Ceremony was nearly halfway finished.
Then suddenly—
The wind changed direction.
A strong scent swept across the clearing.
Wild.
Dominant.
Ancient.
Several wolves immediately stiffened.
One of the warriors near the entrance of the territory turned sharply toward the forest path.
Footsteps echoed from the darkness beyond the trees.
Slow.
Heavy.
Unhurried.
Every wolf in the clearing instinctively lowered their gaze.
Even the pack warriors stepped aside.
The Alpha himself straightened as the tall figure finally emerged from the shadows of the forest.
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Aria had never seen him before.
But she knew immediately who it was.
The man walking into the clearing carried an aura unlike anything she had ever felt.
He was tall—taller than most wolves present.
Broad shoulders wrapped in a long dark coat that moved slightly with the wind.
His dark hair fell loosely around his face, and his golden eyes glowed faintly beneath the lantern light.
Those eyes.
Aria’s heart skipped painfully.
They were the same eyes she had seen in the forest.
The same eyes that had watched her from the darkness.
The Alpha King stepped fully into the clearing.
His presence alone silenced the entire pack.
Even the strongest wolves lowered their heads in respect.
The Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack stepped down from the stone platform and bowed slightly.
“Alpha King,” he greeted respectfully. “Your presence honors our pack.”
The Alpha King’s gaze moved slowly across the territory.
Observing everything.
The ceremony.
The wolves gathered around the clearing.
The lanterns.
The full moon shining above them.
Then his eyes stopped.
They landed directly on Aria.
Her breath caught.
The warmth in her chest suddenly flared stronger than before.
For a moment, the Alpha King simply looked at her.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Almost as if he had already expected to find her here.
Aria felt frozen under his gaze.
The entire world around her seemed to fade into silence.
Then slowly—
The Alpha King began walking forward.
And he was walking straight toward her.
