Chapter 37
Fifteen days.
I hurl my glass against the wall, shattering it. Jagged edges litter my living room floor, a perfect metaphor for how I feel right now.
Like my heart is in fucking pieces, broken and jagged and raw. Laying at my feet with no one and nothing to put it back together again.
“Fuck!” I roar, every muscle in my body buzzing with anger.
Jax comes up behind me, putting a hand on my shoulder and squeezing.
It’s too much. The added weight of his hand on my shoulder is unbearable to take. Like I already hold the weight of the world there, and that little bit of extra weight is beyond what I can tolerate.
Dropping to my knees, I let my head fall into my hands as my chest constricts, my breaths becoming ragged.
I shake him off. “You should leave. You haven’t been home in weeks.”
“And leave your sorry ass here to self-destruct?” he says bitterly, then more gently adds, “We’ll find her, Emmett.”
His hand comes back to my shoulder, and this time I grab it, squeezing it as though it’s a lifeline, the only thing tethering me to reality as Riley slips further from my reach.
