Chapter 25
Chapter Twenty-Five
MIA
The sun beats down on my back as I sit on the edge of the dive platform, my toes dangling just above the crystal-clear water. Rigel is beside me, his presence a steady comfort as he hands me a snorkel and mask. He helps me adjust the straps of my mask and explains the basics.
“Ready?”
“I think so.” My voice trembles slightly.
I’m really doing this?
I take a deep breath, the scent of sunscreen and saltwater filling my lungs.
He shows me how to put on the mask and adjust the straps. “Okay, now let me explain how to breathe through the snorkel. It’s important to keep the top of the snorkel above water at all times. If water does get in, just blow forcefully through the mouthpiece to clear it out.”
“What if I can’t clear it out?” My eyes widen, and a surge of panic rises in my chest. “What if I can’t breathe?”
“Mia, I promise you’ll be fine.” He places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “If you feel uncomfortable at any point, just lift your head out of the water and take a breath. I’ll be right there with you the whole time.”
I nod, trying to calm my racing heart.
Despite his reassurances, I still hesitate at the edge of the platform, my fear of drowning holding me back. Sensing my trepidation, Rigel calls over to one of the dive masters.
“Hey, do you have a float she could use? Just to help her get comfortable in the water?”
The dive master nods, passing over a small, rectangular float. Rigel helps me onto it, making sure I’m balanced before gently lowering me into the water.
At first, the cold water takes my breath away, but as I lay on the float, the warmth of the sun on my back and the gentle rocking of the waves slowly ease my nerves. Rigel stays close, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back.
“Whenever you’re ready, just put your face in the water and breathe normally through the snorkel,” he encourages.
I take a deep breath, then slowly lower my face into the water. I blink, expecting a rush of water, but nothing happens. Well, nothing except that a whole new world comes into focus before my eyes.
A vast expanse of coral stretches out beneath me, teeming with colorful fish and exotic sea creatures. I’m so entranced by the sight that I almost forget to breathe, but Rigel’s gentle touch reminds me to take slow, steady breaths through the snorkel.
“Oh my god,” I breathe, my muffled voice echoes in my ears. “This is incredible.”
“I knew you’d love it. Want to try swimming around a bit? Ditch the float?” He chuckles, the sound distorted by the water.
Hesitantly, I nod. Rigel helps me off the float, keeping a firm grip on my hand as we kick our feet and glide through the water. At first, I cling to him tightly, but as we explore the reef, my confidence grows.
Schools of brightly colored fish flit past us, their scales glinting in the filtered sunlight. Beneath us, a vast expanse of coral stretches out like an alien landscape, each formation more intricate and beautiful than the last .
We spend the next hour marveling at the underwater wonders: schools of shimmering fish, graceful sea turtles, and delicate coral formations that sway in the gentle current. Every so often, Rigel squeezes my hand, a silent reminder that he’s there and that I’m safe.
A sense of accomplishment fills me with unadulterated joy. It’s a feeling I haven’t experienced in years.
“You did amazing. How do you feel?” Rigel helps me onto the platform, his smile wide and proud.
I pull off my mask, shaking the water from my hair. “Exhilarated. Grateful. Like I can conquer anything. I can’t believe I was so scared of this,” I admit as we float side by side, our fingers intertwined.
Rigel squeezes my hand. “Sometimes the things that scare us the most turn out to be the most rewarding.”
I turn my head to look at him, my heart swelling with affection. “Thank you for this. For pushing me out of my comfort zone.”
He smiles, his eyes crinkling behind his mask. “Anytime, snark shack .”
I laugh, the sound bubbling up from my chest. Out here, with the sun on my skin and the sea cradling me in its embrace, all my worries seem to melt away. For the first time in longer than I can remember, I feel truly at peace.
We spend hours exploring the reef, marveling at the wonders that lie beneath the surface. Every time I think I’ve seen the most beautiful thing possible, something new catches my eye—a glittering school of silvery fish, a sea turtle gliding gracefully through the water, a delicate sea fan swaying in the current.
By the time we finally surface, my face aches from smiling. Rigel helps me back onto the platform, his hands warm and steady on my waist. As we make our way to the top deck, the sun is beginning to dip toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Rigel takes my hand, a mischievous glint in his eye.
“So now that you’ve conquered snorkeling, how about we try something a little more adventurous? ”
I raise an eyebrow, my heart still racing from our underwater explorations. “What did you have in mind?”
He grins, pointing to the waterslide that winds its way from the top deck down to the water below. “I think you’re ready for the big leagues.”
I gasp, my eyes widening in horror. “No way. Absolutely not. I may have faced my fear of snorkeling, but there’s no way I’m going down that death trap.”
Rigel laughs, squeezing my hand reassuringly. “It’s not as scary as it looks, I promise. Here, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll go first, and then I’ll wait at the bottom to catch you when you come down.”
I hesitate, my gaze flickering between Rigel’s confident smile and the daunting slide. “I don’t know, Rigel. It’s so high…”
“You can do this. I believe in you.” His words are soft but firm, his eyes locked on mine.
I take a deep breath, then nod. “Okay. But if I die, I’m coming back to haunt you.”
He grins, pressing a quick kiss to my cheek before making his way to the top of the slide. I watch as he sits down, gives me a thumbs up, then pushes off, whooping with joy as he careens down the slide and splashes into the water below.
Moments later, his head pops up, and he waves at me from the base of the slide. “Your turn!”
With shaking legs, I climb the stairs to the top of the slide. My heart pounds as I sit down, gripping the edges of the slide so tightly my knuckles turn white.
“You’ve got this,” Rigel calls from below.
I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and let go.
The rush of wind and water is overwhelming, and a scream tears from my throat as I plummet down the slide. Beneath my terror, however, is a thrilling sense of exhilaration, a rush of adrenaline that makes me feel more alive than I have in years.
I hit the water with a splash, the cool embrace of the sea enveloping me. As I surface, sputtering and laughing, Rigel is there, his arms wrapping around my waist .
“You did it.” His smile shines brighter than the setting sun. “I’m so proud of you.”
I beam at him, my heart swelling with a mix of pride and affection. “I can’t believe I actually did that. It was terrifying but also kind of amazing.”
Rigel nods, his eyes sparkling with understanding. “The best things in life usually are.” He guides me through the clear blue water toward the bow of the boat.
The sun sets on the horizon. The water glistens and ripples with golden hues as the sun sinks lower in the sky. I lick my lips in anticipation, tasting the salty tang of the sea on my lips. The rhythmic lapping of water against the hull creates a soothing melody to accompany our swim.
When we reach the bow, Rigel pulls me close, his hands resting on my waist. We’re hidden from the view of the other passengers, cocooned in our own private world.
He looks at me with those intense eyes, a promise in the depth of his gaze, and I can’t help but be drawn closer, captivated by the magnetic pull between us.
Rigel leans in, his breath a warm tease on my lips. His lips brush against mine as he leans in to kiss me, sending shivers down my spine.
I wrap my arms around his neck, deepening our kiss as we lose ourselves in each other.
The world fades away, and all that exists is him and me, our hearts beating in sync as we explore each other’s lips. My heart beats wildly as our lips move in perfect sync, and his touch ignites a fire within me.
It’s a soft touch at first, almost hesitant as if he’s savoring the anticipation, but then all hesitation disappears, and his lips become more insistent, hungry for more.
I respond eagerly, my hands roaming over his chest, feeling the hard planes of muscle beneath his shirt.
His lips move against mine passionately, his tongue tracing mine in a dance as timeless as the tide. I cling to him, my fingers threading through his hair, pulling him closer, lost in the sensation of being utterly possessed by this man in the embrace of the ocean.
Every nerve in my body sparks alive, and every breath shared in the kiss stokes the fire he ignites within me. The cold water around our submerged bodies contrasts with the burning heat of our touch, heightening everything until there’s nothing else but this moment, this connection, this overwhelming desire.
His lips, fierce and passionate, press against mine. I melt into him, my hands tangling in his hair as I pour all the pent-up longing and desire of the past few days into the kiss. His tongue dances with mine as we explore each other’s mouths. Every touch sets my skin on fire, leaving me breathless and wanting more.
The boat rocks gently beside us as we cling to each other, caught up in the intensity of our connection. The sound of the ocean fades into the background as all my senses are consumed by Rigel. His hands travel up my back and tangle in my hair, deepening our kiss even further.
My body responds to every touch, arching toward him as desire courses through me.
I wrap my legs around his waist, letting him keep us afloat. There’s no denying his hunger or the very prominent bulge that presses against my core. His erection, hard and insistent, grinds against me, and I moan softly into his mouth, letting him know exactly what I want. His kiss deepens, becoming more possessive, sealing us into the moment.
In this moment, nothing else matters—not my secrets and not the danger that lurks on the horizon. All that exists is Rigel and the passion that burns between us, bright and unbreakable.
Rigel’s lips leave mine, trailing hot kisses down my neck. I tilt my head back, giving him better access as he marks me with his passion. The cold water no longer registers, only the heat of his body against mine.
As we finally break apart, breathless and flushed, I rest my forehead against his. “Promise me something,” I whisper, my voice trembling with emotion.
“Anything,” he replies without hesitation .
“Never let me forget this day.”
Rigel’s hands roam over my body, leaving trails of fire in their wake. My own hands explore the hard planes of his chest. The passion between us builds, threatening to consume us both.
A voice screams in my head, warning me to stop and slow down; this is happening too fast.
But I ignore it, caught up in the heat of the moment and the way his erection thickens against me. I know where this will lead if I let it, but dear god, I want it so badly.
My hands ache to explore his chiseled frame, to feel his mouth devour every inch of my body. Every indecent thought floods my mind as his lips claim mine with a fiery passion.
His lips trail down my neck, his breath hot against my skin. My hands bury themselves in his hair as I lose myself in the sensation, but then a gasp escapes me, and I pull away from him, my whole body trembling with desire and fear.
“What’s wrong?” His dark eyes bore into me, full of lust and confusion.
“I’m sorry. I just… I can’t do this. It’s wrong of me to lead you on.” I shake my head and try to extricate myself from his embrace.
“What do you mean you can’t do this?” Understanding dawns in his eyes, and he nods, taking a deep breath to calm himself.
“It’s not you. It’s me.” I run a hand through my hair, frustration and longing warring within me. “I care about you. More than I thought possible, but there are things about my past, about who I am, that you don’t know. I don’t think it’s fair to lead you on. There is no future between us.”
“Keep your secrets, Mia. In my previous line of work, I know how deadly such things can be, but if you think for one second that means there’s no future between us, then I’m sorry to say, but you’re wrong.”
Rigel releases me and treads water, letting the distance build between us. “When you’re ready to talk, I’m here to listen. No judgment, no pressure. Just love and support. Your secrets are yours, and I would never try to take them from you. I don’t think that means we can’t be together. ”
“But…” Tears prick at my eyes,
“No buts, Mia. I’m not going anywhere, and it seems as if you could use someone in your corner. I am that man, and I’ll prove it.”
“I just… I need some time to process everything.”
Rigel nods, a flicker of disappointment in his eyes, but he quickly masks it with understanding. “Of course. Take all the time you need.”
Slowly, reluctantly, I pull away from his embrace. The water feels colder without his warmth surrounding me, but I need to put some distance between us, both physically and emotionally.
We swim back to the stern of the boat in silence, the only sound the gentle lapping of the waves against our bodies. Rigel stays close by my side, his presence a comforting reassurance even in the midst of my inner turmoil.
As we reach the dive platform, Rigel helps me up, his strong hands steady on my waist. For a moment, we stand there, face to face, the tension between us palpable.
His hands linger on my waist, his touch sending shivers down my spine. His eyes lock with mine, intense and unwavering.
“Mia,” he says, his voice low and rough with emotion. “I understand you think you need time, and I respect that, but I want you to know that this—what’s growing between us—it’s not something you can run from. And you need to know, I’m not willing to let go of it easily.”
“Rigel, I…” I swallow hard, my heart racing at the determination in his words.
He presses a finger to my lips, silencing me. “You don’t have to say anything now. Take the time you need to sort through things. But know this. I want you, and I’m not going to give up on what we could have together.”
His hand moves to cup my cheek, his thumb brushing lightly over my skin. “When you’re ready, I’ll be here. Waiting. Because you’re worth waiting for.” With that, he leans in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead. “Good night, Mia,” he whispers, his breath warm against my skin .
“Good night,” I manage to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
He pulls back, his eyes searching mine for a long moment before he finally steps away, giving me the space I need to breathe.
I watch him walk away, my heart aching with longing and confusion. Part of me wants to run after him, to throw myself into his arms and let him chase away all my fears and doubts.
But I can’t.
Not yet.
Not until I’ve faced the demons of my past and found a way to break free of the secrets that bind me. With a heavy sigh, I turn and return to my cabin. Rigel’s words echo in my mind with every step.
He wants me. He’s waiting for me.
And I want him too.
As I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, my thoughts drift back to the day’s events. The snorkeling, the slide, the kiss… It all feels like a dream, a brief respite from the harsh reality of my situation.
But even as I savor the memories, I can’t shake the unease that settles in my gut.
The secrets I carry, the danger that chases me… It’s not fair to drag Rigel into that mess. He deserves better than a life on the run, always looking over his shoulder.
And yet, the thought of letting him go, of facing the future without him by my side—is too painful to bear.
With a sigh, I roll over, burying my face in my pillow. Tomorrow is another day, another chance to figure out what path I need to take. For now, all I can do is try to get some rest and hope that the answers will come to me in time.
