Chapter 47

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

Leona

My body was flooded with adrenaline after fighting off those psycho-ass dogs.

There were too many fucked-up creatures in this world, and I didn’t have nearly enough information or firepower to handle fighting them.

The battle was raging, with our side finally winning.

If only because of Delphine’s sacrifice.

Tabitha worked beside me, helping the healers while her own bloodshot eyes remained filled with tears.

I didn’t know Delphine all that well, but I knew what it felt like to lose someone who held a piece of your heart.

The girl was a badass in my opinion. After everything she’d been through, all the bullshit life threw her way, and now losing one of her mates, it was insane she was still standing here.

If I’d endured all the shit Tabitha had, I’d probably have fucked off to a beach somewhere and never talked to another human again.

But we weren’t on Earth, or surrounded by humans.

There were some. Good guys from the Umbra Noctis, who I met over the years because of Nuri’s involvement, and the handful of slaves fighting for the bad guys.

They were dying fast. Falling at the hands of their own as much as ours.

The daemons and lumens fighting for Belial didn’t care who they killed.

The ones that stuck around after the witches freed their bonds, they were vicious as hell.

And yet, they were no match for Gremory.

That daemon was in serious beast mode after gently placing Delphine’s body in one of the healer’s tents.

He was a fucking devil in every sense of the word.

He used the elements, weapons, wings, and claws to maim and kill anyone who stood before him.

His fury was infectious, and our own people were fighting with renewed energy.

The Kings had retreated to the far side of the field, attempting to take down Morax.

But Michaela had joined him, and together they were a fucking force.

I was impressed with the girl. She appeared frail and slender, but clearly packed a punch.

And she was a quick study, fighting with her lumen powers with ease.

Maybe I was a little envious. Not having any kind of magic like the witches or elemental power like the daemons and lumens put me at a serious disadvantage.

A sudden shift in the air caught my attention, and everyone else’s. The enemy army started cheering, and I craned my neck to see what was happening. One of the injured lumens stepped up beside me, looking out on the field.

“Belial has left his castle.” The lumen spoke, fear coloring his words. “We’re fucked.”

I scanned the sky for Nuri. She was fighting near Grem. They both paused long enough to notice the new player on the field. I didn’t want her to go after Belial. Of course we had to defeat him to win this fucking war, but if she faced him and lost, I would be completely alone.

She was my only friend, the only creature in the universe I trusted.

It’s time, little one. Come to me.

I nearly stumbled when the voice echoed in my mind. He’d been silent for ages, and the absence of his possessive promises had built a longing in me I didn’t care to admit to.

Where are you?

In the castle. Locked away. Listen to her wings.

I had no fucking clue what that meant, but someone else might. And I would need help getting into the castle.

“Nuri!” I shouted into the sky, knowing she would hear me even a mile away.

She dove out of the sky, landing before me, covered in gore and looking like some kind of ancient warrior. “What’s wrong?” Her eyes raced over my flesh with concern.

I shook my head. “Nothing, really. But we need to go to the castle.”

Nuri pursed her lips. “And why is that?”

Planting my feet and squaring my shoulders, I prepared for her reaction to my next revelation. “I’ve been hearing someone in my head. I thought maybe I was going insane. He’s trapped in the castle. He says I can free him. I think it’s important and might help us win the war.”

Nuri fisted her hands at her sides, her dark-blue eyes glowing with power. “And you have no idea who this is?”

I shrugged. “It sounds insane…but I think it could be King Corson.” Nuri sucked in a breath, but I continued before she could interrupt. “He said…listen to her wings.”

Nuri’s eyes flashed, and an unreadable expression crossed her face. “Let’s go while Belial is distracted. Michaela is putting on a show, and the brute can’t resist. He’s always coveted what he cannot have.”
