Chapter 34

Chapter Thirty-Four

Drea

“What are you doing here?” I asked, not bothering to hide my irritation.

I was trying to act calm, but inside, I wanted to vomit. I was so embarrassed. Blair, on the other hand, acted like she had just been electrocuted, pushing off me and adjusting her dress.

Mackenzie laughed. “I could ask you two the same thing. Fallon told me to come find you, something about wanting a few pictures together.”

“We… we were just...” Blair was getting flustered, and I tried not to giggle, not that it was a laughing matter. There was nothing funny about the situation I had found myself in. She just looked so adorable with crimson-red cheeks.

“I know what you two were doing. I got the visual. I’ve had my suspicions for some time now, but when I saw you two walking off the dance floor holding hands, I knew I was right.

So this is why you have been so nice lately, Dre.

I guess I have you to thank for that, Blair.

Her attitude was getting to be a bit much. ” She smirked.

I groaned. “Mackenzie, you are insufferable. Can you please keep this between us?” The last thing I needed was for this to get out to anyone. Not for my sake—I didn’t care if anyone knew what I was doing in there, or who—but for Blair’s.

Her personality outside of the bedroom, or closet, for that matter, was very different from inside, and I knew how embarrassed she would be if anyone found out.

“It doesn’t feel good to be on the other side of the sex door, does it?” She laughed.

“What is she talking about?” Blair turned to me, face still flushed.

I sighed. “I caught her and Fallon in the back room at a book signing a few years ago. That’s why there are cameras everywhere now.”

Blair’s face created a new shade of red as she gaped at me. “Even in your office?!” she whisper-shouted.

I chuckled. “Of course not, but that can be arranged if you’re interested.” I winked and laughed when she swatted my arm. At least Mackenzie didn’t totally ruin the mood.

“Like that would’ve stopped me, anyway.” Mackenzie winked. I turned my attention back to her, forgetting for a moment she was there.

“Mackenzie! Promise me you will keep this between us!” I demanded.

My heart was still racing, but after seeing the look on Blair’s face, I needed to make sure this stayed between us.

Her face was flushed, and she looked like she could have cried at any moment.

I hated seeing her like that, and I hated that I was the reason.

Keeping this from Cara had been hard on both of us.

I was sure once we told her she would understand, and maybe even be happy for us, but it was the other side of what her reaction could be that stopped us every time.

I didn’t want her reaction, or anyone else’s, to ruin what we had.

I wanted to stay in our little bubble just a little longer.

She must’ve seen the same thing I did, because she turned from Blair and sighed. “Fine, this stays between us and Fallon.” I glared at her. “Hey, she’s my wife now. I can’t start my marriage off with a secret, especially one as good as this one. My marriage would be over before it began.”

I sighed in defeat. I should have known that was coming. “Fine, but she can’t tell anyone! Kaia already knows, but if this gets back to Cara, we can’t—”

“Don’t worry, Dre. After everything you’ve done for me, I owe you at least this. So I guess this means your ban is over. What have we learned?”

I glared at her but looked at Blair, who was still blushing. “We’ve learned a lot of things.”

Mackenzie didn’t shame me like I thought she would. Instead, she smiled, perhaps knowing what it was I learned. “Well, I’ll let you two get back to it. I have a bride to get back to, but don’t keep her waiting too long, Drea. Have fun!” she yelled over her shoulder as she left.

My shoulders sagged and I knew there was nothing to get back to anymore. “I’m sorry about her. She can be a real ass sometimes.”

“No… uhh… it’s okay. That was the first time I’ve gotten caught in public. You’ve corrupted me.” She grinned.

“Welcome to the dark side, love.” I winked.

“Yeah, well, we should get back out there.” She walked back over to me, and I wrapped my arms around her. “But first, we need to fix this. I can’t have everyone looking at your boobs.” I looked down to see my dress almost around my waist, and my tits were, in fact, almost out in the open.

“No, we can’t have that, now can we?” After she fixed my shirt, I kissed her softly, and took her hand in mine. “Shall we? I better go find Fallon.” She smiled as I led her back to the party.

“They seem really happy… The Bennetts, I mean.”

I smiled at the mention of my best friend. “They do, don’t they? I’m glad they figured things out.”

She stopped and turned to me. “What do you mean?”

“For a long time they kept trying to tell us they were ‘just friends,’ but we all knew from the beginning. The way they both looked at each other. I’ve never looked at any of my friends that way.”

None of them except for Blair. She was the exception to every rule I had ever put in place for myself.

“Fallon has been through a lot over the years, and I am thankful she found Mackenzie. They have been through their fair share of bullshit together, and Mackenzie has come a long way to earn back her trust, but I honestly don’t know what would have happened to Fallon if she never found her.

After she went through a really bad breakup and moved here, I didn’t think I would ever get my best friend back.

In my eyes, Mackenzie saved Fallon’s soul just by loving her without fail.

No matter where they were in their lives, together or apart, she never stopped loving Fallon.

She never stopped showing it either.” My eyes watered at the memory, but Blair squeezed my hand in comfort.

She didn’t speak as we started walking in a comfortable silence. Walking with her, our hands interlaced together, was a feeling I could have gotten used to. Having Blair in my life was something I could have gotten used to.

When I locked eyes with Fallon, I knew there was going to be no way out of this conversation. “Good luck, baby.” Blair squeezed our joined hands before letting go and kissed my cheek.

Hearing those words made something in my chest tighten. I squared my shoulders and headed to Fallon as Blair headed back to our table.

“There you are. I’ve been looking for you, babe!” When I reached her, there was nothing short of amusement in her eyes. Mackenzie was standing next to her, mirroring the same expression as her wife. They really were perfect together, despite the current mischief brewing in their expressions.

“Here I am.” I smiled. “Kenz said you wanted some pictures?”

She gasped. “Oh yes, right! Rylee is waiting for us over in the garden.”

“Sounds good, love. Lead the way.” Good was the last thing it sounded like. I knew there was no way for me to avoid talking about what I was doing with Blair, and I couldn’t deny what Mackenzie saw. I wanted to relive the moments before she walked in, but I couldn’t deny it.

“I’ll be right back, Mrs. Bennett.” Fallon kissed her wife sweetly, and I wanted to gag.

“I’ll be waiting for you, Mrs. Bennett.”

“You two make me sick. Let’s go, Fal.”

Despite my sarcastic comment, I was beyond happy for them. Fallon was my family, and I wanted nothing but the best for her. She was truly happy for the first time in a long time, and I would never tell her, but I was forever indebted to Mackenzie for that.

“All right, boss lady, let’s go. I thought getting laid was supposed to make you more relaxed?” she said as we walked away from Mackenzie.

I groaned. “Word travels fast, doesn’t it? It does when your wife doesn’t interrupt before I have an orgasm!”

She laughed. “Well, I guess we’re even now. At the book signing, I was literally seconds away from com—”

“We are even!” I interrupted. I didn’t need to relive that horrible day. It still haunted me whenever I saw that godawful chair… I really needed to get rid of it.

“Anyway,” she continued, waving me off, “when you said you were bringing her, you told me you guys were barely even friends. Why did you lie to me?”

She sounded a little hurt, and I felt awful. Her wedding was not the place I wanted to discuss this with her, but I owed it to her. She was my best friend, and this was sort of something pretty big happening in my life.

I sighed. “I didn’t lie, not technically, anyway. We are friends, I mean, we were. It’s just…” I stopped when we approached Rylee.

“Hey, Rylee! How are you, love?” I was all too eager to change the conversation and Fallon knew it too. She scowled at me, but I ignored her as I ran up to Rylee and gave her a hug that was probably a little too long, trying to draw out the moment.

She laughed into the hug. “I’m good, sweets. You look amazing, Dre. And Fallon, my God, if you were straight, you would definitely be getting pregnant tonight!”

Fallon couldn’t hide her laugh. “I can almost guarantee Roxxy said the exact same thing to Mackenzie, but thanks. Where do you want us?”

“Could you guys turn away from the camera? I would love for you both to be holding the bouquet between you.”

We did as Rylee asked, and I knew the pictures were going to turn out beautifully.

“Don’t think I forgot about our conversation earlier.

What is it you two are doing? You clearly aren’t just friends, babe.

Are you just existing together?” She raised her eyebrows, emphasizing the words I always spoke when asked about what Skylar and I were doing.

She was quiet for a few poses, and I honestly thought she was going to drop it. I guess I was wrong.

“We were friends. We are friends, but…” I just couldn’t find the words to label what we were doing. I knew what it looked like and what it felt like, but something stopped me every time I tried to say the words out loud.
