Epilogue
Cain
Iglance at the TV as mechanical birds fly alongside contenders through the darkness of Ever Woods, but it barely holds my interest. It’s the device in my hand that captures my attention. It was delivered right before the Gauntlet started with a note.
Hope you enjoy the show,
Keep your eyes on Captain Brooks.
-Angel
Brooks, what a waste of space, but it doesn’t surprise me that my baby sister can kick his ass in the Blood Matches. What is frustrating though, is waiting for this demon to get back to work.
Unlike the mechanical birds for the Gauntlet, the spies for Asmodeus are ScornManti, a half-demon and half praying mantis, if it were still holy, that is.
These creatures are blood-red and black, blending into the night, allowing their vision to be shared with those they are told.
In this case, with my device, and I’m sure Asmodeus.
The only issue, I’m assuming, the asswipe prince didn’t think of was what feeds on his little spies, which happen to be the vines and vegetation that live in Ever Woods.
The last thing I saw was the look of horror on Captain Brooks' face after Rez cut his cheek before this bug took off, running for its life.
At least Asmodeus’s spies are trained to go back and finish the job. I watch as it circles back through the woods, but picks up a commotion heading its way.
“Cut them off,” Emer’s voice rips through the TV.
On the screen, I can see Emer’s pink hair pulled up on top of her head, and the side of her face is pitted and black as if she’s been burned.
She’s leading a group of at least twenty well-armed warriors deeper into the woods.
Further to the right of the screen, I can make out Moni’s figure flying.
As the ScornManti turns and weaves, trying to keep up with the group, the screen gets a little blurry, and I can’t help but punch the wall next to me.
“Gah!” I scream, getting frustrated about the picture.
“Can’t you guys do anything right?” Standing up from the sofa, I mentally use my magic to throw the picture onto the big TV and begin to pace when I look up and catch something I’ve never seen before.
“Freeze,” I command the screen. I focus on the picture.
There’s no way, I’m seeing tails in the background in between the trees.
It must be Lynx, Rez’s pet, shifting. I unfreeze the screen and catch the tail-end of Rez giving the camera the double birds before falling into the portal and blinking out of sight.
Yep, that’s my sister for you. So classy, that one.
Heat slams into my chest as if I’ve been punched, and in the next second, electricity runs up my back and into the base of my skull, causing my limbs to go numb, dropping me to the floor.
Woah. I don’t know what I was hit with, but it was strong enough to affect me for a moment. Picking myself up, I stand on slightly shaky legs and brush myself off when I feel magic all around me, as if a dam has opened, and I shake my head in disbelief.
Could she have really done it? Was that a coincidence?
Oh, little mouse. I chuckle. It seems you have done our work for us and given us all the ability to cross over to Earth. How about I come to congratulate you myself?
