Chapter 13 Dangerous Duo #2

He could not reach Finn directly.

He put the puck into Rowan's corner instead.

Rowan arrived, drew the defense low, and sent it through the crease. Finn changed his blade angle at the last instant.

Goal.

3-2.

Finn came off the bench after the celebration and pointed both gloves at Luca and Rowan.

"Graphic element," he said. "Show some respect."

Luca hit his helmet. "Tasteful blue line."

They defended the lead through the final six minutes. With the opposing goalie pulled, Nolan blocked a shot, gathered the puck, and sent it the length of the ice. It crossed the goal line with twenty-three seconds remaining.

4-2.

The horn made the Wolves 5-3.

Not a contender. Not saved. Five wins the organization had not been promised.

In the locker room, Claire waited until Vale finished before showing them her phone.

A clip of Luca's goal had already been posted by the local broadcast. The caption read:

HALE + BENNETT: NORTHSTAR'S DANGEROUS NEW DUO.

Finn read over Luca's shoulder. "I have become punctuation now."

"Plus signs are powerful," Luca said.

"I'm not even the plus sign."

Rowan sat at his stall removing tape from his socks. "You scored the winner."

"Do not introduce facts into my grievance."

The room laughed. Finn's offense was theatrical and brief, grounded in the security of having been part of the play whether the caption understood it or not.

Luca looked at the frozen image beneath the words. Rowan's glove was at his neck. Luca was turning toward him. The photograph had captured a truth and made it safe by choosing the correct category.

Dangerous on ice.

Nothing else to see.

The ten minutes before media belonged to cleanup and anticipation. Players changed out of wet base layers. Equipment staff collected gloves and helmets. Claire moved through the room identifying who would stay at stalls and who could leave through the training corridor.

"Luca, Rowan, Finn, Gabriel," she said. "Local broadcast first, then print. They want the line story."

Finn looked at Luca. "I have been restored to the narrative."

"Try to use your time wisely."

Rowan pulled a clean shirt over his head. "Credit the support read. Do not turn one goal into a system change."

The instruction was for all of them, but his eyes rested on Luca at the end.

"Anything else?" Luca asked. "Approved adjectives?"

"Accurate ones."

Luca smiled for the room. Underneath, he remembered Rowan admitting on the living-room floor that the clock scared him sometimes, one unguarded word more accurate than the paragraphs he offered cameras.

Media entered ten minutes later.

The first questions went to Finn about the winner and Gabriel about the third-period response. Then microphones gathered around Luca's stall.

"That weak-side play with Hale has become a pattern," a reporter said. "What makes the connection work?"

Luca glanced across the room.

Rowan had his own group. He stood in front of his stall with wet hair and a clean team shirt, captain's composure restored.

"He puts the puck where defenders don't want it," Luca said. "I have the easy job."

"You two looked like you knew the goal was coming before the lane opened."

"That's the idea."

"The broadcast called you a dangerous duo. Fair?"

Finn shouted from the next row, "Deeply disrespectful."

The reporters laughed.

Luca smiled. "We're a line. Finn makes half those reads possible. But if they want to put my face on the graphic, I support journalism."

Across the room, someone asked Rowan the same question.

"Bennett sees space early," Rowan said. "His timing has improved because he is willing to work at the parts of the game that do not make highlights. Mercer gives us stability on both sides of the puck. The line is producing because all three understand the read."

It was generous. Accurate. More praise than Rowan would have given in September.

Luca felt pride rise before the hurt found it.

A week ago Rowan had lain on the floor of his home and admitted the clock scared him. He had held Luca's hand in bed after asking him to stay. He had left Luca's food visible in the refrigerator.

Here, he could describe Luca perfectly and still remove every reason the description mattered to him.

That was appropriate. The cameras did not deserve the rest.

The problem was that when the cameras left, Rowan often behaved as if no one did.

After media, Finn dropped onto the bench beside Luca.

"You okay, Dangerous?"

"Devastatingly."

Finn followed Luca's gaze toward Rowan, who was speaking with Vale near the door.

"He gave you a real compliment," Finn said.

"I know."

"And you look like someone canceled your birthday."

Luca reached for his jacket. "My birthdays are excellent."

Finn let him avoid the question. His eyes stayed thoughtful for one beat, then he stood and called across the room for Jace to find food.

Luca left alone.

At his apartment, the rooms looked more temporary than they had before Rowan first crossed the threshold. Luca set his game stick beside the wall and put his phone on the counter.

He showered. Ate. Watched the goal clip once without sound.

The camera angle followed Rowan below the pressure, Finn beneath it, Luca entering the weak side. The frame froze on Rowan's glove at his neck. The caption remained beneath it.

Dangerous duo.

At 11:06, Rowan messaged.

Good adjustment after the first goal. Recovery at ten.

Technically caring. Emotionally complete only if Luca performed the missing translation himself.

He typed: Thanks, Captain.

Deleted it.

Typed: Is this the public statement or the private one?

Deleted that too.

Finally he sent: I know.

The three dots appeared, then vanished.

No second message came.

Luca placed the phone facedown.

He was done turning scraps into enough simply because Rowan had chosen them carefully.
