32. Cain

THIRTY-TWO

CAIN

"Are you fucking kidding me?" I question Wyatt as he's briefing me on what went down this morning. I'm still not allowed to ride with the SWAT team, but hopefully soon.

"Yeah, we arrested Alexander Raven for the murder of his wife."

The world as I know it is spinning. There's no way this can be true. "He loves Lindsay with all his heart. Her and their daughter are his world. What the actual fuck happened while I was out?"

Wyatt drags me over to an empty desk and motions for me to have a seat. "I knew you were going to have an issue with this."

"An issue is putting it mildly. It's not as if I didn't know that Lindsay was in an accident, and she was killed. It just happened in the middle of me being hurt. It was a tragic car accident. Right?" Now I'm wondering if I'm the crazy one, making up things that weren't actually true.

"It was, but after some investigation..."

"I'm sure that was pressured by her parents, wasn't it?"

He doesn't answer, but inhales deeply before continuing. "We found out that he'd done some work on her car. The brakes gave out, and that's what caused her to wreck. There's been thought that it was a premeditated murder on his part."

There is no way any of this is true. I've known this man since I was in high school. I'm the person who introduced him and Lindsay. There's no way I didn't clock this. "I just don't believe this."

Wyatt crosses his arms over his chest. "Everyone is having a hard time with it, Cain. I don't know what we can do, but I'm the same as you."

I'm in no condition to investigate this on my own, but I've known Alexander for a good portion of my life. There's no way I think he could do this to anyone, much less his wife. "Maybe when I'm up and moving around better, we can look into it."

"I'll be right there with you. I'm not sure what we can actually do for him, but Cain, you should've seen him when they sentenced him."

I'm mind blown that I missed all of this. The first few weeks after being shot, I was in a haze of painkillers and then the pain once they wore off. "I'm on it. I'll get started today by looking through the arrest records and whatever else there is. We'll figure it out."

I say those words more to myself than for anyone else. Alex may not have the last name Miller, but he's my family, and I'll be damned if anyone fucks with my family.
