Chapter 13
Chapter Thirteen
Scythe
“What the hell is going on in here?” I demand, pissed that Josephine hung up on me.
I’d just opened the door to my room while on the phone with her, only to find two of the pocket pussies on my bed toying with each other. They lift their faces for me to see that both of them are new.
“We just wanted to give you a good time,” one of them says, batting her lashes and pouting her lips, running a hand over the other woman.
“Neither of us has been with you yet, and we’ve heard all the amazing things you do, and we just wanted to experience it,” the other one coos.
Narrowing my gaze, I clench my hands into fists at my sides. “You have ten seconds to get the fuck out of my room.” I step to the side and point to the hall. I don’t have time for this shit. Not when Josephine hung up on me. Not when she’s received something, thinking it’s from me.
“But Scythe—”
“Out,” I roar, losing patience when that’s never happened before. Not once in my life have I not kept my cool like this.
“Brother?” Diablo calls out, coming out of his room. “You good?”
Turning from the doorway to my room to face him, I grind out, “You deal with this. I don’t have time. I gotta get to Jos.”
“You got it.” Diablo nods and shakes his head as he sees the two whores.
Stomping down the hall, through the front doors of the main room, I head for my bike just as Styxx, Ghost, Beast, and Hellhound pull in. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know my mood when Styxx’s gaze meets mine.
“What’s goin’ on?”
“Someone sent something to Jos at the salon. She called to thank me for it, thinkin’ it was me . . .” I let the words hang and swing a leg over, straddling my bike. “I don’t have time to talk about it now. I’ve got to get there before she takes off.”
“Why would she take off?” Hellhound asks, cocking a brow. Not one of them had gotten off their bikes.
“Two of the pocket pussies decided to help themselves to my room. They were on my bed when I opened the door, and I’m sure Jos heard the noises they were making.”
I don’t give any of them a chance to ask more questions and start my bike, kick the stand up, and hit the throttle, slinging rocks with the back tire as I shoot out of the parking area of the clubhouse out onto the road.
My gut churning the whole time.
“She left without telling me anything,” Samantha, Josephine’s mom, says, her brows furrowed, and she wrings her fingers together before pointing in the direction of Josephine’s office. “Last I saw of her, she went into her office with the chocolates and card that had been delivered for her.”
“Thanks, Samantha.” I nod and head into Josephine’s office, finding the candy in which she was talking about along with the card. I nearly see red as I read the little note. No wonder she thought it was from me. Whoever sent it signed it with an S.
“What is it?” Styxx asks, coming up behind me.
I hand it to him to read as a thought pops into my head. What if it was the Scarlet Needles? That could be what the S stands for. But why go after Josephine? She doesn’t have anything in connection to them. It’s not like she has a medical background.
Fuck.
Isabelle didn’t have a connection at first either, but again, no one knew she was mine and Styxx’s baby sister we thought was gone forever.
The fact she’d been so close to us all this time still has a way of prickling my skin like a thousand needles.
She’d been taken and given to those junkies to raise.
They were going to use her pretty much for her organs.
They already took one of her kidneys, damnit.
I grind my back teeth, clench my fists together, and turn to see all of my brothers who’d followed taking a look at that note.
Hellhound meets my gaze. I’m sure his thoughts mirror mine. Same with Styxx, considering Isabelle is Hellhound’s ol’ lady.
“Let’s get back to the clubhouse and find out what’s going on,” Styxx grumbles.
“I’ve got to find Jos first.” There’s no way I’m going back to the clubhouse until I find her.
Twisting, I pick up the box of chocolates, and close it, not missing the fact several pieces were already missing. I take the card from my brother and start for the back door. I’m not going back through the front. I nod to Samantha as I pass her. “I’ll tell her to call you soon as I get to her.”
“Just tell her to text me. No need to make a fuss over calling,” Samantha says, waving a hand nonchalantly. She’s one hell of a woman, and I hate to admit, being around her has kind of been hard. I’m not one for emotional bullshit, but she reminds me of my mom before she was killed.
I shake the thoughts away before they can take over and put the card and chocolates in my saddle bag as my phone rings.
Frowning, I pull it out of my pocket to check the ID. Seeing Josephine’s name pop up, I tell the others as I answer. “Jos, where are you?”
“Ugh . . . this is TJ,” the male voice stammers. “I was calling from the lady’s phone.”
“You with the lady right now, TJ?” I demand, not having a good feeling about this. I don’t know who this person is, but at least they had the right idea to call.
“Yeah, she’s being loaded into an ambulance right now.”
The fuck?
“Ambulance?” I straddle my bike. “What happened?”
“Don’t know, really, but she ran her car into a ditch. Some guy tried to take her, but me and my two buds, we stopped him. She hit her head on the street,” he explains.
“Where?”
TJ answers, and then someone says something in the distance. “I’ll ride with her,” he says to them. Then to me, “They’re taking her to County Hospital.”
“I’ll meet y’all there.”
Disconnecting, I shove the phone in my pocket and look at the others. “Styxx, go in and tell Samantha that something’s happened and Jos is being transported to County, then call Jamie.”
“You got it.”
Nodding, I start my bike and head for the hospital. My thoughts running a mile a minute thinking about what could have happened, and who could have been trying to take her from me.
“Tell me again what you saw?” I ask, trying to focus on TJ, who is no more than maybe seventeen or eighteen at the most.
Upon arriving at the hospital, I got there first and was told I couldn’t go with her to the back. Thankfully, Stella’s working today, and she’ll hopefully be the one to take care of Josephine.
As TJ explains everything he saw, I pace the length of the small vending area off to the side of the waiting room.
I didn’t want Samantha to hear this. James, her husband, showed up a few minutes ago and was sitting with her.
Hell, the waiting room is filled with my brothers and Josephine’s friends.
“The guy was wearing a hat and dark sunglasses. My friends and I saw the accident happen and were heading to help, but the guy drove up, got out, and went about getting her out. Don’t know, but something about the whole thing didn’t sit right, and my friends and me stopped him.
He took off running, hightailing it out of there, spinning tires. ”
“You know what his build was? Color?” Tombstone asks, crossing his arms.
“Built like you.” TJ nods at Tombstone. “Dude had a dark tan.”
“Appreciate you helpin’ Jos,” I remark, holding my hand out. “Anything you ever need, just give me a call.”
“You’ve got a club marker, kid, if you ever need it.” Reaper grunts, also shaking the kid’s hand. “If you’re ever looking to join the club, come by.”
“Thanks,” TJ says and shakes his head. “But you don’t owe me anything. I didn’t do anything someone else wouldn’t do.”
“Kid, you were there and stepped in when you didn’t think something was right,” Angel mutters, getting TJ’s attention. “You did good and when we say you have our marker, it’s not something we give lightly.”
TJ opens his mouth again to speak, but someone calls out, “Family of Josephine Sexton.”
Spinning on my heel, I step to the front next to James, Samantha, and Jamie.
“How is she?” James asks.
“We’re pumping her stomach right now,” the doctor answers, looking annoyed. “Your daughter took something, and we don’t know what it is. She was really out of it.”
“My daughter wouldn’t have taken anything,” Samantha bites out snidely. “She’s not a junkie.”
“Ma’am, your daughter is lucky she isn’t dead right now from an overdose,” the doctor sighs.
“I know my daughter, she wouldn’t have taken anything. I was with her before she left,” she argues.
“What if she didn’t know she’d taken something?” I speak up before the doctor can throw his bullshit out again and piss us all off.
“It’s a possibility, but without knowing what she ate last, I can’t say for sure.” He shrugs.
Sneering, I step forward. “How about you get your ass back there and ask Dr. Stella Blackwell to take over,” I suggest and turn to Styxx, “Do me a favor, go get that box of chocolates. We’ll give it to Stella, and she can find out what was given to my woman.”
