Chapter 14

Mia

I’m sitting in the booth, alone, when two girls wander over to me.

“Is anyone sitting here?”

The one who asks is blonde, and her friend has dark red hair. They look slightly tipsy, and I don’t blame either of them for wanting to sit down.

I shake my head. “No, you both can sit.”

The blonde grins at me. “You’re a lifesaver!”

I give her a smile back, and my thoughts drift to Killian again when their conversation with each other catches my attention.

“I can’t believe she’s hooking up with Killian,” the red-head says, and I freeze, because for a moment I think that she’s talking about me. How the hell does she know about me and Killian?

But then the blonde replies, and I feel all of the color drain out of my face.

“I’m not,” she says. “They were always going to get back together. They were perfect together. Besides, they never stopped hooking up.”

“He’s freaky,” her friend replies. “I bet he’s made her come so many times by now.”

Wait. Right now?

I hate how stupid I feel. I remind myself that me and Killian aren’t a real couple, and that I have no right to feel even remotely upset about what they’re talking about.

Why the fuck would Killian bring me to a club to hook up with someone, though? That’s kind of diabolical.

You can’t get mad, I tell myself again. You’re nothing to him.

Fuck, that stings way more than it should.

“Mia!”

I look up to see Killian’s brother, Maddox, staring down at me with a wide grin on his face. I met Maddox earlier today, before Killian left to do errands.

He’s handsome, but not like Killian. Killian has harder edges, and Maddox is classically good-looking. He has a preppy vibe to him, which is the exact opposite of Killian’s vibe.

“Hi,” I say, giving him a small smile.

“Did my brother ditch you?” he asks, and I don’t know what to say to that. I bite my lip, wondering how I’m going to reply, when he speaks up again.

“Come on,” he says, extending his hand to me.

I quirk my eyebrows up at him. “Where are we going?”

“You’ll see,” he replies.

Before I can think better of it, I decide, fuck it. Killian’s probably getting his dick sucked right now by his ex, and I’m sitting here like a poor, pathetic fool, waiting for him. I don’t care that he told me not to leave this area. He doesn’t get to make all the rules.

I take Maddox’s hand, letting him help me up. We make our way through the crowd, which is packed with people dancing and drinking, and by the time we finally get through it, I’m dizzy and breathless.

“Jesus, they’re wild,” I say, and Maddox laughs.

Maddox leads me down a long hallway and to an elevator, and I give him a look.

“Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere cool,” he says. “I promise.”

The elevator dings, and he motions for me to step inside. I do, and he follows after me.

When he presses a button with the letter ‘R’ on it, I give him another look.

“R?” I ask. “The roof?”

He nods. “Wait until you see it.”

The elevator takes us up to the top, and when it opens up, I stare in awe at the area around me.

Little cozy tents are set up on the roof with plush couches and mini firepits. There’s a bar off to the right, and the entire area is adorned with twinkle lights. It’s honestly magical.

“You like it?” Maddox asks me, grinning.

I nod as I look around. There aren’t that many people out here, and when Maddox speaks again, I learn why.

“Only VIP members are allowed up here,” he tells me, and I nod.

We make our way to one of the loveseats, and I sit down.

“What are you drinking?” he asks me.

“Just cranberry and sprite,” I tell him, and he laughs.

“Alright,” he says, nodding. “Cranberry and sprite it is.”

He heads towards the bar, and I lean back on the couch, watching the fire in front of me. I try not to think about what Killian’s doing right now, but I fail miserably. I can’t get my mind off him, and I hate the thought of him hooking up with anyone else.

The elevator opens, and I see the blonde and her friend from earlier, and I pray that they don’t sit near us. I don’t want to hear about anything else Killian might be doing with their friend.

They get in line at the bar, and I can see them talking to Maddox out of the corner of my eye, but whatever they say, he shuts it down quickly. Then he makes his way back over to me, drinks in hand.

He passes me mine, and I thank him, taking a sip.

He sits down next to me, the grin never leaving his face.

“So, tell me how my brother managed to pull someone as pretty as you?”

“Your brother isn’t exactly lacking in the looks department,” I reply, and Maddox chuckles.

“Yeah, but he’s kind of a prick,” he retorts, and I stare at him with wide eyes.

“I’m kidding!” he exclaims, taking a sip of his drink. “I love my brother. But he can be a dick sometimes.”

“If you’re trying to get me to agree with you, it’s not going to work,” I tell him, and he laughs again.

“Alright, I’ll stop with the Killian hate,” he says. “Tell me about you.”

“What do you want to know?”

He shrugs. “What’s your favorite movie?”

I don’t know why his question catches me off guard, but it does. I can’t help but laugh as I take another sip of my drink.

“Not sure what my favorite is, but I love a rom-com.”

“Oh, come on,” Maddox replies. “Everyone has a favorite. And you don’t really strike me as a rom-com kind of girl.”

I roll my eyes. “What kind of girl do I strike you as?”

“You seem more like a Kill Bill type,” he says, which makes me laugh.

“No,” I reply, shaking my head. “Absolutely not. I hate action movies.”

“I wouldn’t have guessed that about you,” he says, and I shrug.

“Looks can be deceiving,” I tell him.

He laughs as he starts to ask me something else.

Only, I can’t hear him. I’m suddenly spinning, and I hold onto the couch, as if that can help me somehow.

I open my mouth to tell Maddox that something is wrong, but no words come out. He’s still talking, and he looks concerned as he looks at me, but my vision is blurring and darkening in the corners. I blink rapidly, trying to make the fuzziness go away.

It suddenly dawns on me that he must have drugged me.

Panic claws at my insides, and I try to stand up. My legs give out almost immediately and I can’t stop myself from falling. I hit the ground, hard.

Maddox’s face is the last thing that I see before my world goes dark.
