Chapter 73
JAKE
“He’s leaving,” Mason says quietly in our comms.
Frowning, I look at the truck I’m following. Once it hit the highway, it turned its headlights on and proceeded normally. Luke’s in the storm cellar, running the plates, but so far there’s nothing unusual. No rush, no panic. Just a normal drive.
It hits me wrong.
The comms crackle, and then Luke’s voice sounds in my ear. “Warden, Emma’s not at the ranch. She left a note. Going to find her.”
“Fuck.” I pull to the side of the road, pause to take a breath, then turn around.
“Don’t worry, Jake, I’ve got this,” Luke assures me. “Go back to the ranch and wait for her, just in case.”
It takes all my willpower not to charge for her and find her myself, but I know Luke will make sure she’s fine, and it’ll preserve her independence.
I’m fucking pissed, though. Really fucking pissed.
