Prologue

Once upon a time…

“Have you ever been in love?” he asked from across the darkness. His body shifted nervously, making the sofa he was curled up on creak.

I was absolutely still on the bed, hoping he couldn’t hear how loudly my heart was beating.

“No.” Honesty. I had no other words to offer.

“I want to know what it feels like to love someone and have them love you back. I bet it would be massive.”

“I wouldn’t know,” I replied.

The chance of that happening was kind of zero.

“One day, you’ll know,” he said, sounding more than confident. “You will. I promise you. It will be the most perfect thing in the world. You’ll know, baby.”
