Luna #2

His tongue swipes his bottom lip, and images of his mouth on me just hours ago come rushing in, causing my cheeks to flare. Amusement flashes in those intense greens, but I don’t mistake the heat behind them. I’m not the only one remembering this afternoon.

A couple of the moms walk in to get their daughters, and I do a double-take when I see them both head in Cayden’s direction instead. I busy myself with helping the girls gather their things, but can’t help sneak a glance their way.

He pushes himself off the wall and stuffs his hands into his pants pocket. His smile is almost automatic and doesn’t reach his eyes. They are a few years older than me, and from what I’ve heard around town, both are divorced and on the prowl for their next husband.

I watch their conversation, and it’s blatantly obvious they are flirting up a storm from the body language and the slight touches on his arm as they talk.

I resist the urge to roll my eyes as they both giggle like schoolgirls at something he said.

What the hell are they talking about?

Cayden’s not that funny.

I study his body language and breathe a little better when I see nothing that suggests he’s interested. If anything, he looks bored and…annoyed.

He must feel me watching him because his eyes flick to mine, and I bite my cheek to stop laughing. Now that I know he’s miserable over there, it’s actually amusing to watch.

His eyes narrow in my direction, and I quickly look away and focus on saying goodbye to the girls who are left.

Scarlett runs over to me when she’s done with the treasure box and shows me her glow ring.

“Well, doesn’t that look beautiful on you?” I smile at the small hand being waved in my face.

“It’s pink,” she beams. “My fav-wit color.”

“Mine too,” I grin, feeling my heartstrings pull at her adorable face.

“Daddy!” Scarlett runs behind me, and I turn to see Cayden standing there as he easily picks her up.

“Hi, baby girl. You danced so good today,” he grins. Unlike his earlier smile with the moms, this smile is genuine and full of love as he looks at his daughter. I don’t think my heart will ever get used to seeing the two of them together.

“I twirled fast!” Scarlett declares happily.

“Yes, you did,” Cayden chuckles before setting her down. “Can you go get your water bottle for me and your backpack?”

Scarlett nods her head and runs off to the cubby holes on the back wall as the rest of the room clears out, leaving the three of us alone.

“I see you met some of the other parents?” I ask as he turns his focus on me.

“You mean the two moms who are recently divorced and wondering if I’m free for drinks this weekend?” He asks, frowning in my direction.

“Wow. They didn’t waste any time,” I laugh.

“So are you going?” I ask the question before I can stop myself and instantly regret it.

Right now, I’m fine being in my bubble and pretending I have him all to myself, but I would be an idiot to think he doesn’t venture out.

He’s probably got girls in every state he plays.

“Is someone jealous?” He asks, raising an eyebrow with amusement flashing in those greens.

“No, of course not,” I scoff, playing it off like it’s no big deal when, in fact, I know I would hate every second if he went.

“I mean, I know it’s not any of my business.

You’re free to sleep with who you want,” I say, shutting up then before I babble even more.

Avoiding his eyes, I tuck my hair behind my ear as I watch his daughter hop from one fairy sticker stuck on the floor to the next.

“Sleep with?” He frowns. His eyes move to his daughter, but I can tell his mind is a million miles away. Lifting his ballcap, he runs his hand through his hair before settling it back down on his head.

“The only woman I’m sleeping with is you,” he says quietly. “I’ve had no desire to even fuck a woman until…” His voice trails off, and I stare at his profile.

Is he saying I was the first woman he’s slept with in three years?

Hard eyes turn on me and narrow. “Are you fucking other men?”

“What?” I blink, caught off guard. “No, of course not,” I shake my head.

Some of the tension leaves his shoulders as he relaxes slightly.

“Good,” he says, looking me dead in the eye, “because I’m not into sharing.”

“Well, neither am I,” I huff, crossing my arms across my chest. If he wants me all to himself while we have this little fling, then I sure as hell get the same in return.

“Glad we are on the same page,” he says, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips before Scarlett comes bounding in, breaking up the conversation.

“Daddy, ice cweam?” She takes his outstretched hand and grins up at him.

“Yes,” he laughs. “Time for ice cream.” Throwing her small backpack over his shoulder, he turns to me. “I'd better get going. I promised her I would take her down the street to get ice cream. I saw a cute place with games that I wanted to take her to.”

“Down to Earth Smoothies,” I smile, as he mentions Maya’s place. “Best ice cream and smoothies in town.”

“Miss Luna get ice cweam too?” Scarlett asks excitedly, jumping up and down.
