Chapter 37
CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
SILVER
Fuck. What am I supposed to do? I’m trying my hardest to not become a permanent fixture in her life, but I can’t stop myself from being close to her. Lord knows I love this disaster prone woman. But I feel like I’m nothing compared to the rest of her men. Why would she want me when she has them?
I can hear the soft sounds of them sleeping in the cave, but after witnessing her come like that earlier, I find myself restless. So instead of getting the much needed sleep we need after searching for her for this past week, I find myself pacing around outside the cave.
“Silver?” Her voice has me turning to see her approaching, wearing one of her lightweight dresses and her arms crossed over her chest.
“It’s cold out here, you should go back to bed,” I tell her.
“I wanted to check on you.”
“On me? Why?”
“I was worried about you.” She pauses for a minute before continuing. “I’m… We… I guess I just don’t know what role you want to play in my life. Sometimes I think you just want to be my friend, but sometimes I’m sure you want more.” Lord, don’t let her ask me this when my own mind is so confused.
“Sweetheart…” I sigh, turning to look at the pond. What can I say?
After a moment of silence, she speaks. “It’s okay if you don’t feel that way about me back. I’m just sorry to put you in that position earlier, I’ll try to be more aware of it in the future.”
I turn to face her as I ask, “What do you mean by ‘back’? How do you feel, Penny?”
“Silver, I—” She blinks heavily before stumbling. I reach out and grab her elbows to steady her.
“Whoa there, are you okay?” I ask in concern as she places her hand on her forehead.
“I feel funny,” she says, looking up at me as she furrows her eyebrows.
A wave of dizziness moves through my own head, before I waver on my feet. “Quick, sit, before we fall,” I tell her as I pull her to the ground between my legs and wrap my arms around her. I try to scan our surroundings but everything is growing fuzzy quickly.
“Silver, I’m scared, what’s happening?”
“Someone’s here, they’re using magically infused gas to knock us out.”
“Oh my god! What are they going to do?”
“If I could move… I would hide you… somewhere. But… I’m so sorry…
Sweetheart,” I tell her as we slowly fall to the ground sideways with my arms wrapped around her.
“They’re going to… take you. Try not to worry…
we’ll always come for you… no matter… what happens…
no matter… where you go… we’ll always find you.
” I try to hug her, but I can’t move my arms at all.
I manage to watch her scared eyes stare at me as mine start to close.
“Silver, I l—” And once again, I don’t get to hear the end of that sentence as I’m unable to keep my eyes open, passing out completely.
