FAIRY GODMOTHER

Iwatch in amusement as Penny’s mates run around the yard after their twin toddlers.

I’m so happy everything worked out for her. When she stepped through the Enchanted Veil to Dyconia before I had a chance to explain things, I thought I’d really messed things up.

Knowing she was going to be at a disadvantage, I was able to use my magic to switch out her cash for a bag of coins I’d acquired from a woman who’d previously come through from Dyconia.

It wasn’t like it was worth anything in the human world, so she left it with me to pass on to someone in need.

I had no idea how much it was worth and hoped it would help Penny in some way.

From what I saw, she collected mates like Pokemon cards, so I knew she would be okay.

She was clearly a very positive, adventurous, strong woman. I envied her for it, in fact.

Running my bookshop kept me busy, and I had my share in adventure as I helped women switch back to their rightful realm. But it wasn’t the same as having my own adventure. And watching them through the window, like I was doing with Penny right now, wasn’t the same as experiencing it myself.

Feeling content that Penny was doing well, I let my mind shift to Aquaria.

It doesn’t take long for my magic to find her standing at the helm of her ship, her mates standing around her, two of them holding small children.

The oldest looked to be almost three now, and the younger one was still a baby.

I’m surprised every time I find them still sailing the seas.

But it’s clear when you see how happy they are that they love it.

The older child points at something out of my view, making them all look before laughing.

Ria tickles her belly and even though I can’t hear it, I can see the giggles escape her.

I don’t like watching for too long, feeling like I’m spying on them. I just like to check in on occasion, so I close my eyes and let my mind shift to Odessa. She had a really hard time when she first arrived in Dyconia, so I tend to check in on her more than the other woman.

I open my eyes and wait as the picture comes into focus.

One of her mates is cradling a small child as she smiles at them fondly.

I can’t hear anything through my magical window, but seeing them was enough for me.

One of her other mates enters the room and immediately moves to kiss her on the lips before his hands move to cradle her belly.

That’s when I realize she’s sporting a small baby bump.

I smile at the happiness that seems to radiate from all of them.

I watch as all their heads turn to the door, without being able to hear anything, I don’t know what’s captured their attention until the door opens and two men enter.

Suddenly, my heart hammers in my chest and my eyes widen as I stare at one of the men.

“Who is that?” I whisper as I lean closer, trying to get a better look at his face.

I’ve never seen him before, why am I having such a strong reaction to him? What did this mean?

I watch as he shakes hands with the other men, and I can see they know each other somehow. His brown hair sits a mess on the top of his head as he speaks with the others. Whatever he’s saying has them nodding along and, more than ever, I wish I could hear through my magical window.

I watch in a daze, trying to pick up anything to tell me who he is and why I feel like my heart is going to beat out of my chest. But a sudden pain in my stomach has my hand dropping from the wall.

“Not now,” I grumble as I rub my stomach.

I know there was no denying the pull, so I move to the door at the back of the room and place my hand in the center, watching as the magic flows from my hand to encircle the door before a flash of light shoots out.

I grab the handle and pull it open to find a beautiful woman staring at me with wide eyes. “Come in,” I say, opening the door wide and gesturing inside. She steps in and I quickly close the door, watching as the light disappears.

“What is this place? Where am I?” she asks, her wide eyes taking in the Enchanted Veil, or as I usually thought of it, my office.

“Welcome to the human realm, your new home,” I say with a tentative smile. I never knew how the women would react to being here. Some of them were okay, like Aquaria and Penny, but some were horrible, like Odessa.

“Human realm?”

“Yeah, why don’t you take a seat, I’ll get you a drink,” I tell her, moving to grab her a bottle of water. She takes a seat and I pass her the water, opening the bottle for her, before sitting across from her. “What’s your name?”

“Freya.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Freya. I know this is probably a lot to take in. But tell me one thing, was there something in your realm you were anxious to get away from?”

I have to ask, because if my ability has taught me anything, it’s that the Dyconian women are normally sent to me in a moment of great need.

Aquaria showed up with a broken arm from her husbands, afraid they were going to kill her.

Odessa showed up after her husband had killed his brothers, her other two mates, and Penny showed up when she was being forced into the mating hunt, an ancient ritual where men hunted down their mate to claim them.

“Yes, my husbands are returning today to take me away. They gave me a year before they said they’d return, and when they do, I need to have a child with them,” she says nervously.

“And I take it you don’t want that?”

“No, the thought of being with them is repellent.”

“Are they bad men?” I ask, worried about the situation I’ll eventually have to send another version of her into.

“No, I just…”

“You can tell me, Freya.”

“They aren’t my type.” I stare into her face, trying to read the truth there, and when a small blush touches her cheeks, my eyebrows raise.

“You like women!”

“Ugg…” she groans, dropping her face to her hands.

I can’t stop the small laugh that leaves me.

“Don’t worry Freya, I think everything is going to work out for you.

” And not just her, but likely for the woman I’d have to send back in her place.

I just hope whoever she was, she wanted a family.

I didn’t have control over what happened in Dyconia, but so far, everyone I sent through had ended up with their fated mates, whether they realized it or not.

Now I just have to find Freya in the human world and convince her to go into another realm she doesn’t even know exists.

As a pang of pain hits my stomach, I swear under my breath.

Crap! It was too soon, if the pain was starting already, I had no time to find her and come up with a plan to get her through the Enchanted Veil.

Looks like I was going to have to get creative and move fast.

“Are you okay?” Freya asks.

“I will be, but I might need your help. Tell me, do you want to go back there? To Dyconia?”

She quickly shakes her head. “No. Do I have to? Can I stay here?”

I give her a smile as I ask, “How do you feel about drugging and kidnapping?”
