Shay’s bluntness almost made me drop my drink. To cover up my shock—and embarrassment—I took a small sip.

Which turned into a long gulp until the glass was half empty.

“Sorry to be so forward,” Shay said, crossing one leg over the other. “But I’d like to make sure we are all on the same page before we go any further.”

“Spoken like a man with a law degree,” Lucas muttered.

I chuckled at the joke. In his faded jeans and baggy hoodie, Shay looked like the furthest thing from a lawyer.

“I have to admit, I was surprised you suggested the threesome.” Lucas cleared his throat. “Glad to see you’re still as straightforward as you used to be.”

“Straightforward?” I said dumbly.

Lucas nodded. “Back when we dated, you were never afraid of telling me what you wanted. Especially in bed.” A knowing smile touched his lips.

For a moment, I considered telling them that it had been Sara’s idea, that she had sent the text without my knowledge. But there wasn’t any point in that right now. I was here, after all.

“I was surprised when you texted me,” I countered. “Getting a booty call from you out of the blue caught me off guard.”

“It wasn’t a booty call,” Lucas replied.

Shay snickered.

“Not at first,” Lucas added. “I thought something might happen if we got drinks together, but I was serious when I said we would see how the night went. Then you jumped straight to threesome.”

“Are you two saying you don’t want to do… this?” I asked. It felt strange to discuss it out in the open like this, but it was freeing, too. No playing games. No dancing around the subject.

Only total honesty about what we all wanted here.

The two of them shared a look.

“We definitely want this,” Shay said.

Lucas nodded slowly. There was a hungry glimmer in his dark eyes that reminded me of the boy I dated so long ago.

“I’ve had a dry spell,” I admitted, taking another sip of my drink. It was strong, just the way I liked it. “Your text came at the right time. I need to blow off some steam.”

“Dating apps are a nightmare,” Shay said.

I turned to him. “Yes! I’ve gone on three Tinder dates in the past five years, and they were horrible. I didn’t vibe with any of the guys, not even enough for a one-night stand.”

“Say what you will about our relationship,” Lucas said with a smile, “but you and me? We had chemistry.”

“A lot of it,” I agreed.

“So,” Shay said. “What now?”

I finished the rest of my margarita and put the glass down on the coffee table. “Get me another drink while I freshen up. And then we’ll see where this goes.”

As I left the room, I heard Lucas say, “Told you she was forthright.”

The bathroom was meticulous, with dark sage tiled walls and a black marble sink. I resisted the urge to pull up my realtor app and search for the last sale price. That could wait until tomorrow. Right now, I was preparing to have a threesome.

A threesome!

I was beyond nervous as I stared at myself in the mirror. For the last five years, my entire life had been devoted to one thing: taking care of my son. I rarely had time to myself—the only real luxury I had enjoyed was going to the movie theater every few months while Sara watched Brandon.

Coming here was so far in the extreme that I never would have believed twenty-four hours ago that I would be doing it.

But beneath the nervousness was something else: excitement. Being here, sitting and calmly discussing the sultry act with Lucas and Shay, was exhilarating. I hadn’t felt this free, this alive , in a very long time.

I didn’t have any doubts. This was what I wanted.

The only question was how we were going to… you know. Start . I was out of practice in the dating game. I didn’t know how these kinds of affairs began, let alone adding a second guy to the mix.

Fortunately, the margarita was doing its job. I had a pleasant buzz already. I played with my hair a little bit, nodded to myself in the mirror, then left the bathroom.

Before I could even make it to the living room, a hand reached out and grabbed my elbow. I had only a moment to realize it was Lucas before I was pulled into his strong arms. His lips closed over mine, and suddenly we were kissing.

I gasped in surprise. My ex was kissing me, and I was kissing him back , my body reacting automatically to the energy pinging between us. His lips were tangy and sweet from the margarita, and as familiar as if we were both seventeen years old again. He pulled me closer until my body was molded against his, feeling that hard bulge in his jeans, our mouths rolling passionately against one another.

Oh my God. Lucas!

I gasped as he pulled away and stared down into my eyes. An entire sea of information passed between us, silent and wordless, with the weight of our history behind it.

“I couldn’t wait,” he whispered, his breath mingling with mine. “I had to know.”

“Know what?” I breathed.

“If we still had the same chemistry,” he replied, voice low and deep.

I raised an eyebrow at him challengingly. “And?”

Lucas smiled down at me. “Don’t act like you don’t know the answer.” He brushed back a lock of blonde hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear. “If you’re not feeling it with Shay, he’ll leave. It can just be the two of us. Up to you.”

His hand lingered on my lower back, and then he walked back into the living room. His words bounced around in my head: it can just be the two of us . I wanted him badly at that moment, needed him to pick me up and carry me into the bedroom and destroy me with his body like he used to when we were kids.

But I didn’t come here for just that. I desperately needed some excitement in my life, something different , and I might never have another chance at this.

I took a few seconds to compose myself, then followed Lucas back into the living room. He was sitting in the armchair, smiling in satisfaction. Watching me. His gaze seemed to say: your move .

“This is the last of the pitcher,” Shay said, bringing me my drink refill. “But I can always make another if—”

I put the drink down and pushed Shay backwards until he sat down on the couch. I straddled him, my knees on the cushions, then grabbed his face with both hands, and crushed my lips against his.

If he was surprised, he hid it well. He cupped the back of my neck and held my face against his, kissing me back with a hunger that surprised me. His lips moved insistently, deepening the kiss. I parted my lips and accepted his tongue into my mouth eagerly, hungrily, rolling my own tongue against his. I moaned softly into his mouth as his hand slid down my back, exploring the curve of my ass.

As quickly as I had started it, I pulled back. Shay was breathing heavily, gazing up at me with eyes that were the same sage-green shade as the tile in the bathroom.

“That answers my next question,” he said, tilting his head sideways. “Whether you want me to leave so you and Lucas can be alone.”

I slowly shook my head. This man was a stranger. I’d only met him ten minutes ago, and knew quite literally nothing about him other than the fact that he went to a high school in Portland.

But for tonight’s purposes? The kiss told me everything I needed to know.

Shay’s fingers tightened on my ass, and then his other hand moved up to caress my face, sweeping my hair away so he could continue kissing me. His touch was commanding in the exact way I needed at that moment, an insistence that we keep doing exactly this.

I opened my eyes long enough to glance over at Lucas. He watched hungrily from the chair, and to my surprise, he was definitely enjoying this. That was something I had wondered about—whether Lucas could share me with another man, or if jealousy would ruin the three-person act.

Shay deepened the kiss, possessing me once more. As our tongues danced together wetly, the knowledge that Lucas was only a few feet away heightened everything I felt. Maybe it was because I’d had a long dry spell, but this felt good . Like a cold glass of water quenching years of thirst.

I pushed my hips down into Shay, grinding against the unmistakable bulge that was growing between his legs. He let out a deep grunt in his throat, which was music to my ears. It was proof he was enjoying this just as much as I was.

And then there was a new set of hands on my body, wrapping around my waist, pulling me off Shay’s chest. “My turn,” Lucas growled possessively, yanking me sideways onto the couch. I’d been so absorbed by his friend’s kiss that I didn’t notice him moving. He’d also removed his shirt, giving me a glimpse of his bare chest, still chiseled with muscle after all these years.

He positioned me onto his lap, and I straddled him the way I’d just done to Shay. His kiss was so much hungrier than it had been in the hallway, the intensity ramped up a few notches as his tongue met mine without hesitation. I sighed into his mouth while grinding against his lap, angry that we still had clothes separating us, but not wanting to break the kiss long enough to undress.

Am I really doing this? Having a threesome with my ex and his friend?

I squirmed harder into Lucas’s chest, relishing in the size and power of his pecs. He was warm to the touch, and I desperately wanted to feel my own skin against him, to share our body heat.

Shay read my mind—suddenly he was standing behind me, arms lifting my top up over my head. We broke the kiss for a single heartbeat as my shirt passed over my head, but our lips reconnected with magnetic attraction.

Lucas pulled me closer, our bare skin melding together. My body was on fire, and his felt just as warm as I clutched his shoulder, holding onto him like I was afraid he might vanish into thin air. Shay’s fingertips caressed along my bare back, pausing at the elastic of my bra. Moving toward the clasp to free my breasts.

Yes, I thought. This is really happening .

Then the front door swung open, and a third man strode into the apartment.
