Chapter twenty-seven
Player
I’m standing in front of the clubhouse, smoking a cigarette with Cruz talking my ear off when a car darts out from the back and roars across the gravel, peeling onto the road.
“Who the fuck was that?” I snarl, flinging my smoke.
“Looked like Molly’s car,” Cruz replies. “Doesn’t she drive a little car that color?”
I should know because I was with her for a few months, but hell if I remember her damn car. “What the fuck was she doing here? I thought everybody was on lockdown before we arrived?”
“I don’t know.”
“Get the damn prospects out here,” I snap.
A minute later Cruz returns with Sleaze, Billy Jack, and Booze.
“What the fuck was Molly doing here?”
“Molly wasn’t here,” Booze says. “We were on lockdown.”
“She came by once, but I told her to get lost,” Sleaze admits.
“Well, we just saw her car race off from the back of the clubhouse.”
“I don’t know what she was doing here,” he replies.
“Anybody monitoring the fucking cameras?” I ask.
Booze drags a hand down his face. “Not since the club came back.”
“Check the perimeter,” I ordered, and yank the door open. I need eyes on Taylor. Mama Pearl told me she’d helped with the food, then disappeared. I’d assumed she’d gone back to my room, but now a sick feeling forms in my stomach.
I stalk down the hall and open the door. The room is empty. Pulling out my phone, I call her. She doesn’t pick up, and it goes to voicemail. “Call me,” I bark, and then try her again.
This time, Billy Jack answers.
“What the fuck are you doing with Taylor’s phone?” I roar, fear skittering down my spine. Something isn’t right.
“Saw it light up by the dumpster. She’s nowhere in sight.”
My goddamn stomach drops, and all my blood drains. I can barely get myself to verbalize my fear. “Is there… is there any blood?”
“No, VP. Nothing.”
“Look in the dumpster.”
“The dumpster?”
“Check it, goddamn it.”
A moment later, he comes back on. “Just trash bags, VP.”
“Search the fucking clubhouse. Top to bottom. Now,” I roar.
Something in me tells me they aren’t going to find her. My mind whirls to Molly’s car peeling out. I want to mobilize every damn brother in the club to scour the city for that bitch, but I need to know Taylor isn’t in the building somewhere.
There’s no valid reason for her phone to be lying in the parking lot. Everything inside me is screaming that she’s gone.
She wouldn’t go with Molly. She wouldn’t leave on her own.
What the fuck is going on?
I drop to the bed and try to think. I’ve got to figure this out. Her life may depend on it.
My hand grabs the pillow where she laid her head, and I bring it to my face, breathing in her scent.
I’ll find you, baby. I’ll bring you back. I fucking swear it to you.
There’s a tap at the door, and it swings open. It’s Drae. He looks ashen. He shakes his head. “She’s nowhere, VP. They’re moving the search to the surrounding brush and fields.”
“Review the camera footage. Get me everything you can.”
He moves off to follow orders, and I stand and pace, then dig my phone out of my pocket and dial my father.
