Chapter 1 #3

“I… About the egg smashing?” I asked, because if I couldn’t trust my true-mate who in the name of Frost’s fiery balls could I trust?

His eyes shifted to that of his dragon, and he looked me up and down as if I were the egg smasher instead of the unknowing son of one.

I hated myself for not knowing and I hated myself as the story tumbled out of my mouth.

I was supposed to protect him. I was supposed to be the one who would right the world for him but there I stood, spilling my guts and all my family secrets to a man I’d met on a busy street after all the bars, pubs, and clubs had shut down.

The worst part was, Medwin’s expression never changed as I recounted all the gory details.

“That’s why we can’t locate other affair children of Roster,” he nodded. “Except for your brother, Pras, of course. Some others probably took their eggs or their kids and left London. That would be the smart thing to do.”

“You knew about Pras?” I asked, trying and failing to stop my mouth from hanging open.

“Clarence,” he said and pursed his lips together for a long moment. “You and Pras look alike.”

“A lot of Moonscales do,” I countered.

“Not as much as you and Pras Lavender,” Medwin said. “Perhaps, you do deserve another drink. You prefer, bourbon, huh?”

“Tonight, I do,” I nodded.

“Tonight, you shall have it. I’m surprised Pras was able to keep his mouth shut this long,” Medwin said.

“You mean, he knows?” I stumbled over my words.

“Well, yeah. I told him,” Medwin said. “Most--- Never mind. I told him, that’s all. Well, confirmed it. All hatchlings know who their parents are, Clarence. Maybe you have had enough to drink.” He kept fixing our drinks anyway.

“What are you?” I finally asked.

“I’m many things. Mostly, I’m a Moonscale dragon. I work at the apothecary two days a week and have lots of friends. My parents have a lot of friends too. It’s just the way of the world.”

“Are you a spy or something?” I asked as he handed off my drink.

His fingers brushed against mine and my heart skipped a beat.

Fire danced at the back of my mouth, begging to escape.

I swallowed down the liquor instead and a ring of smoke wafted out of my nose.

Neither one of us bothered to wave it away.

“Or something,” he nodded, making himself another sickly-sweet drink.

Later, it would taste twice as good when it lingered on our lips.

“I understand, this probably isn’t what you had in mind when you imagined finding your omega.

Then again, maybe a knife-wielding omega is exactly who you expected after growing up in your family.

I don’t know. Eventually, I’ll find out.

Not tonight, of course, or should I say today? ”

“What do you mean not tonight?” I asked, setting my empty glass back down on his little drink cart.

“No claiming vows tonight, obviously,” he said and my heart plummeted into a freefall.

“May I inquire as to why?” I managed to ask.

“Because what I know can’t be on your family link, alpha. If you want me, we’re going to have to come up with a plan to get rid of them. I have friends who will help. Pras will help, of course.”

“Uh… Help what?” I asked.

“How tightly shut are you on your links?” he smirked, undoing his belt.

“There we go. Now, they’ll pick up on the fact you really want to see someone without their pants on.

That’s probably the norm over your family link.

We’re going to pull off a takeover, of course.

This is going to make things so much easier. ”

“Uh… You know I’m part of the ruling family, right? And I want my head to stay where it is.”

“Well, I want your face buried between my ass cheeks. So, your head can stay on your shoulders if you’re really not like them,” Medwin said and I swallowed hard.

“I…”

“Alpha, it’s written all over your face. You know they have to go. You’re just worried whether or not we want your power too,” he slipped his belt out of its loops. “Don’t worry. You’ll get to stay around. Can’t have a whole flight of dragons without a leader and a First Mate.”

“Power hungry, much?” I laughed.

“Yeah, I am,” he nodded. “Didn’t expect that, did you?

Don’t you think I see this for what it is?

It’s like this is the mission we decided on in between lives, Clarence.

You’re appalled at the smashed eggs. I am too but those eggs were lucky.

They never grew up to be manhandled by your sire.

You want to save the Moonscale Dragons, don’t you? ”

“Of course,” I nodded, watching his pants fall to the floor.

He stepped out of them and kicked them away.

My eyes were glued to his shiny blue thong.

Shiny things had always gotten my attention but seeing Medwin all wrapped up in one was almost enough for me to promise him whatever he wanted. “What about you?”

“Oh, baby,” he walked closer to me, almost sauntering, and cupped my cheek.

“I’ve been working on this my whole life.

Only now I’m old enough to do a lot about it.

Together, we’re going to fuck up their world.

We’ll topple their little sadistic empire.

Then we’ll lead them into a new era. We’ll make it all right.

They can’t see the new era, but they don’t deserve to.

Baby, we’re going to change the fucking face of Earthside.

You just gotta be brave enough because they’ll trust you.

Well, they’ll trust you more than they trust the rest of us. You’re their heir.”
