13. Sienna

SIENNA

“Oh my fucking god,” I gasp the moment I walk into my bathroom.

My eyes go wide and my heart begins to race.

When I got up in the night to pee, I didn’t turn the light on.

But right now, with the sun streaming in through the open door to the bedroom, there’s no denying what I left on the counter beside the sink, only a few inches from the meds Calvin came and got for me last night.

My vibrator.

It’s…well, it’s pretty huge.

It’s the biggest of my collection, and…it’s hands down my favorite.

And it was right there to greet Calvin last night.

With a groan, I wrap my fingers around its impressive girth and march it back to where it belongs with its friends in my nightstand.

My cheeks are still burning a few minutes later when I stand in front of the sink with my toothbrush in hand.

I shouldn’t be embarrassed. It’s just a sex toy. Everyone has them. Everyone uses them.

Without a man in my life, I deserve the pleasure it provides me with.

It certainly brings me less bullshit than a man.

But…did I want Calvin Keller to see what I use to get myself off in the secrecy of my bedroom?

My face burns hotter as I remember that it isn’t just my vibrator that’s hit the spot recently; it’s come hand in hand with filthy images of him.

Goddamn it.

When there’s a knock on my front door a little over thirty minutes later, I almost ignore it.

But despite wanting to hide under my blanket and never look him in the eyes again, I can’t. He knows I’m sick and very unlikely to have gone anywhere.

The second I consider the fact that he might think I’m too distracted with my toy to answer the door, I’m on my feet.

I mutter a “Morning,” under my breath, keeping my eyes on his chest.

“Good morning, darlin’. I brought food.”

Unlike yesterday, when the scent of bacon and maple syrup hit my nose, my stomach growls.

Maybe things are looking up.

Unable to turn him away, I open the door wider and gesture for him to enter.

“I can’t stay long; I’ve got to get to the arena,” he explains, thankfully not noticing my embarrassment as he marches deeper into my apartment and straight for the kitchen.

Today, he moves around it as if he lives here. But while the sight of a hot hockey player working his magic in my kitchen is mind-blowing, I also don’t want to get used to it.

Calvin is only here because I’m sick. As soon as I’m better, he’ll return to life as usual, spending his evenings fucking puck bunnies instead of watching old rom-coms with me.

I try not to be disappointed by that prospect, but one cozy movie night down and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t craving a second.

He is wrong for you, Sienna.

He is everything you don’t want.

So why is it that while my brain screams those words at me, even sick, my body is on an entirely different train of thought?

“I figured you might not want oatmeal again,” he starts, “but it’s so good nutritionally for you, so I got it again anyway. I figured that you could save it for lunch if you’d prefer the bacon now.”

“Definitely bacon now,” I tell him, and when he looks up at me, I find a wide smile playing on his lips.

Tingles descend between my thighs before I can stop them.

“You look brighter today. There’s more color in your cheeks.”

I avert my gaze instantly, more than willing to pretend it’s because I’m feeling better.

“Here we go,” he says before walking over with my fully loaded tray.

I scan each dish, the waffles and bacon. The fresh fruit and OJ. And the coffee.

I reach for that first and take a big sip of the rich goodness.

“Which coffee shop do you go to?” I ask as he lowers his ass beside me with a tray that’s loaded full of food.

Seriously, it’s more than I eat in a normal day.

I try to mentally tally up the calories sitting before him, but it’s impossible.

I’m not very good at mental math on a good day.

When my head is fried, I stand no chance.

“Nancy’s. It’s a diner a block over. Best coffee around, hands down.”

I take another sip, unable to hold in my groan of agreement. “When I’m functioning again, I need to visit.”

“I’ll take you,” he says without missing a beat. “I think you’ll love it. Nancy is retired now. Her granddaughter, Chloe, runs it. She’s doing a fantastic job.”

I can’t help but agree as I pick up a piece of bacon and bite off the end.

The saltiness mixes with the sweetness of the maple syrup, and before I realize I’ve groaned again, Calvin’s eyes are boring into mine.

They darken a shade, and my insides do a little flip.

“Good, right?”

“So good,” I agree, focusing on my breakfast.

I’ve barely made a dent in my food when Calvin leans forward, placing his tray on the coffee table.

I balk.

How? How is that even possible?

“I did a pre-rehab workout,” he explains, hearing my silent question. “I assume that’s what you can hear.”

“Right. Yeah. I guess.”

He shifts forward and turns to face me, his knee bumping against mine.

“Is there anything you need before I go?” he asks, his eyes bouncing between mine as if he can read something in them.

Even if I did need something, I wouldn’t be asking him to get it for me, and I think he knows that.

It’s just not his job. He should be focusing on his rehab, not worrying about me.

I’m already going to hate myself if he gets this and puts himself out of action for a few days.

“I’m fine. It’s more home reno shows and movies for me today.”

He nods, accepting my response. “I’ll check in with you later. Make sure you get some rest,” he instructs as he climbs to his feet. He looms over me, looking larger than life.

“That is literally all I’m going to be doing,” I argue. I swear, something wicked flashes in his eyes, and I can’t help but think of my vibrator. “And you don’t need to check in. I’m perfectly capable of looking after myself.”

“What if I want to?” he asks, quirking a brow.

“I…uh…I hope your rehab goes well,” I say, unable to come up with anything better as he heads back to my kitchen to clean up. “Leave that. I’ll deal with it later.”

“I didn’t bring you breakfast so that you could do my cleaning,” he argues as he rinses the dishes and places them in my dishwasher.

It reminds me of watching him do the exact thing last night, and I bite down on my bottom lip as he bends over, giving me an unobstructed view of his ass in his sweats.

“Okay, so…” He spins around and blatantly catches me ogling his ass.

His smirk turns feral, and my cheeks blaze once again.

It’s a good thing my fever seems to have passed, because I swear I’d have burned to a crisp this morning.

His eyes hold mine for a beat before they drop to my lips.

Thankfully, the couch hides the rest of me from his view—not that there’s much to look at, considering I’m wearing one of Garrett’s old hoodies and sweats.

“I should be done around six tonight. Message me with what you want for dinner, and I’ll grab it on my way home.”

“Oh no, you don’t have to—”

“I don’t have anything else to do.”

“Really? No puck bunnies to keep you entertained?”

His jaw tics the second those words roll off my tongue, but as quickly as I’ve seen it, the reaction is gone, making me question whether I imagined it.

“Message me with what you want. Anything. Got it?” he demands, his voice firm, leaving no room for me to argue further.

“Got it.”

“Good. See you later.”

And then he’s gone, walking out of my apartment like none of that just happened.

I frown at my screen, blinking sleep from my eyes.

It’s the first in a whole stream of messages I’ve woken up to from Calvin.

Sienna: Going through your DVD collection again?

Calvin King of the ice Keller: My sisters, actually. Just planning for tonight.

Sienna: You really don’t need to come here. Go and do something more fun.

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Is there anything more fun than a movie marathon with a sick girl?

Sienna: Well, when you say it like that…

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Have you been sleeping?

Sienna: Might have just been ignoring you…

Calvin King of the ice Keller: We both know that’s not true.

Sienna: I guess you’ll never know.

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Guess what I’ve been doing all day?

Sienna: Exercise?

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Well, yeah…but guess what I’ve been singing while doing them?

Sienna: Oh my god. You have not?

I can’t help the giggle that erupts.

Calvin King of the ice Keller: I have. All fucking day I’ve been walking around doing cheer chants. Everyone is laughing at me

Sienna: Aw, poor baby.

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Some of the guys haven’t even seen it. Can you believe that?

Sienna: Some of them are probably too young.

Calvin King of the ice Keller: Freya has already promised to make Handsy watch it tonight. We can compare our chanting skills tomorrow.

Sienna: Evidence, please.

We continue messaging for a few more minutes before he says that he’s gotta go, and I lower my cell as disappointment flows through me.

Once I’ve given myself a talking to, I open Bea's message and answer the couple of questions she sent earlier.

Almost instantly, it starts ringing.

“Hey, how are you feeling?” she asks the second the call connects.

I consider her question for a moment. After finding Calvin’s messages, I’d kinda forgotten I was even sick.

“Less like death.”

“That’s good. Pretty sure Rachel is next. She’s pale as hell.”

“Oh, Jesus. Just stay away from her and sanitize everything.”

“I am. I will not cope with Everett’s overbearing ways if I get sick.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” I murmur, thinking of how bearable Calvin has made this whole experience. “You never know, you might enjoy it.”

“Oh, no. Absolutely not. He’s bad enough on a good day.”

“You love it,” I tease.

“Hmm…maybe. If you’re feeling better tomorrow, I’m coming over.”

I hate that for a split second, my first thought is Calvin. If Bea comes round, then he won’t be able to.

It’s for the best, a little voice says.

You’ve had two breakfasts and one dinner together and you’re getting attached already.

This is why you don’t get close to hockey players.

“Yeah, okay,” I agree. “But only if I’m better. I don’t want Rett’s wrath if I make you sick.”

“I can handle Everett,” she states confidently.

“Oh, girl. I know you can.”
