Chapter Fourteen

Brian

“Go get situated on the couch. I’ll grab a towel and a blanket for you to cover up with, and we’ll get your bandage changed.”

I wanted to tell her I just needed a towel, but it was better to be safe than sorry. At this point, I’d rather err on the side of caution than be caught getting a hard-on because she was touching me.

Fuck, I can’t remember the last time a woman’s hands were anywhere near my dick when it was hard.

All the more reason to have as much fabric as possible covering me.

Instead, I deflected. “Do you have all the supplies you need?”

The corner of her mouth hitched.

“Yeah, of course. I’m a nurse.”

The way she said it, she might as well have added, “Duh,” at the end of her sentence.

“Well, I’m a cop. It doesn’t mean I have…” I paused as I tried to make a witty comparison, only to realize I had nothin’.

“A gun?” she quipped. “Handcuffs? Bullets?”

Embarrassed I didn’t have a snappy retort, I stood and grabbed my crutches. “You should be nicer to me,” I replied indignantly as I took a step toward the living room. “I just got shot a few days ago, saving your sister.”

She rolled her eyes. “Milk that sympathy cow while you can before it goes dry.”

“Oh, I intend to.”

That wasn’t really true. The idea of anyone’s actual sympathy made me nauseous.

Still, since this was all in good fun, I added, “Maybe you could rub my feet while you’re at it.”

At least, that’s what I meant to say.

I realized that’s not what I said when her eyes got as big as saucers, and I replayed my words back in my head.

Maybe you could rub my dick while you’re at it, was what I heard.

Oh, for fuck’s sake, Brian. You are a damn moron.

I mean, yeah, I’d been thinking it, but that’s not something I would ever in a million years say to someone. It must be the pain medication that had broken my filter.

I briefly closed my eyes tight; how was I supposed to recover from that? I realized there was no possible way. My only option was to act like it hadn’t happened and pray Jade would let me off the hook.

I should have known she’d never do that. Which I respected, because given the opportunity, I’d do the same thing.

“Did you just ask me to rub your dick?”

I turned back to look at her with wide eyes. “What? I think you should schedule a hearing test, Sunshine. I asked you to rub my feet. And I was teasing about that.”

“Don’t gaslight me. You said I should rub your dick.”

Yeah, I was absolutely gaslighting her.

But come on, what was the alternative? Admit what I’d said? Yeah, that wasn’t happening.

“Maybe that’s what you wanted me to say, and you’re projecting.”

She snorted. “Not a chance, pal.”

“Are you sure? You did say I was handsome. Infuriatingly handsome if I remember correctly.”

I could tell by the way she narrowed her eyes and brought her hand to her hip, she didn’t like being reminded of that.

“And I told you, I meant annoying.”

“And I meant feet. Let’s call it a draw.”

With pursed lips, she groused, “Go get on the couch. I’ll be right back.”

Jade

He totally said dick.
